A much different game in a long ago era. But entertaining. Moreover, when the game finished, you have a brief game wrap up from the "hosts", then it's good night everyone from Hockey Night In Canada!!

The insurance companies that covered players medical bills were going to refuse to provide coverage to NHL teams unless they mandated helmets. So the NHL owners, not wanting to cover those expenses themselves agreed, and helmets were mandated. But it was basically a moot point, as about 70% of NHL players were already wearing helmets by 1979, when the rule came into affect. Even without the rule, by the early to mid-80's, 99% of NHL players would have been wearing helmets, which is what it was in any event, as the rule was grandfathered.

There was one broadcaster the network had at the time from Sudbury who possibly could have done a good job, but he was supposedly turned down because of his mustache. That man was Alex Trebek. He was turned down in favour of Dave Hodge.
Brian "Spinner" Spencer with the hat-trick just one month after his father was shot and killed by the RCMP. Brian's father was upset that the local station was showing another game instead of the Leafs. He drove to the station with a gun to get them to switch to his son's game, but they couldn't. Roy Spencer was gunned down when he opened fire on the police.
My favorite thing from this era was the device which was lowered from the scoreboard at Maple Leaf Gardens which presented the Canadian and American flags at 3:48. It had a blower which unfurled the flags and made them ripple just like they were outside in the breeze.

It folded after 1971-1972 A.B.A. season/"Iron City" (Pgh., Penna.) has been without major league hoops team since 🏀. I think it's time that Pgh., Penna. gets N.B.A. team. Maybe not in the near future, but hopefully in our lifetime

I was never fond of this version of the Leafs jersey, although I still bought a #14 (guess why). I also did not like the home whites. Went to Maple Leaf Gardens and Olympia many times, no better atmosphere in sports.

The new jerseys for the Leafs was probably done to give them a new look for the 70's although they were worn until the 1991-92 season
