  • Tasmania is known for it's breath-taking scenery, but Tassie is also a place with a brutal and tragic history. In this episode we make a sobering visit to the Port Arthur Historic Site, a brutal penal colony, and also the site of Australia's worse mass shooting.
    After paying our respects, we head out into Nature again, the great healer, and undertake the challenging Cape Hauy hike, up (and down) over 4,000 steps along the Southern Hemisphere's Highest Sea Cliffs.

    Wow! once again. I'm so lucky to be able to tag along with you guys. Congrats Sue: you have mastered the intricate, not to mention stylish, Nigel dive. Nigel is a man after my own heart - butter with everything whenever possible. I'm so happy that you mentioned the masacre at Port Arthur.

    I lived in tassie in the 80s and visited Port Arthur multiple times when you only had to pay for guided tours. It's changed so much. Looks amazing now so informative

    Hi Nigel and Sue.... I was born and raised in Tasmania, and have visited Port Arthur many many times......but it wasne until my last visit that I found out about, and took the time to go and see......The old COAL MINES HISTORIC SITE on the other side of the peninsula...
    This was a part of the Port Arthur penal system, and the conditions there were worse than that of the main prison at Port Arthur. Cells were underground, and just a little over maybe 5ft wide x 6ft long. The conditions were brutal, working in the coal mine, or pushing carts from the mine to the jetty and back. A part of Port Arthur I never knew about.....well worth a look.
    Also, just a little further on is Lime Bay camping area.....beautiful place to stay. (no facilities from memory)

      We went to Lime Bay, but didn't stop at the Coal Mines. Didn;t realise it was so interesting! We have a long list of places to visit on our next trip to Tassie!

    What an amazing video filled with such amazing footage, and that hike that you both did was amazing and Sue I was with you on the emotional side with those breathtaking views. Port Arthur when we visited was amazing but so sad at the same time. Such hard times and so much suffering. Thank you both doe sharing. Safe travels. Coen and Jay

    Another amazing video. Port Arthus sure is a magnificent but a sad place. The Isle of the dead tour is well worth it as is the ghost tour. A relative of my first cousin lived at Port Artur after his parents died and was taken in by the Chaplin. When I visited the memorial it was very surreal and not a sound could be heard not even birds. The place has changed from my first visit back in 1981. I think I told you that my GGG Grandfather was a convict there for a while before being sent to the coal mines at Lymington in the Huon Valley. I am going back next February and those free camps look very interesting. The only downside is I will be on the motorbike so I have to watch sticky fingers if I am not about. Don't forget to check out Tasman arch, The Blow hole and if the little kiosk is still there the yogurt with muesli and a rabbit pie. As for the peanut butter defiantly butter on both slices then the spread. I also like crunchy peanut butter and chicken crisps. Cut the sanger into strips and enjoy with a cold beer. I look forward to the next episode.

    Stunning!!! Have to admit I got emotional all over again seeing the names at the massacre memorial. It hit me hard when we visited a few years ago... Port Arthur is absolutely fascinating though. We braved ridiculous cold and wind (in December mind you) to go out to the Isle of the Dead (which was amazing) and did the ghost tour at night, which scared the pants off me hahaha. We didn't see that little 4 door solitary confinement room though. I'd be like you Sue, ready to get out now!!! Cape Hauy looked amazing, but I'm not sure my knees would be up to that one - so thanks for showing us. Felt a wee bit queasy as the selfie stick went over the edge though 😳🤢

      @nigelandsueadventures  Před 3 měsíci

      Yeah it really is sad and sobering. It would have been good to do the night tour, it’s all quite expensive though. The hike was amazing!

    I’ve seen that you make that potato pizza quite a bit. Is it just pesto and potato for the toppings? It looks and sounds delicious.

    Amazing views, my father lived into his 90's. was born in the UK { Glasgow } , he would { try } to put butter on the sandwiches when we were kids & he was making lunch . He mentioned his mum made them with butter as a wee child , us kids would put in the request to hold the butter & use mayo please..

      @@nigelandsueadventures I have in the past questioned myself for butting butter on when it's peanut-"butter", but it just adds a creamy layer and helps the bread not seem so dry.
