    The most interesting part about the J-20 is the fact that it is a delta canard stealth fighter. What a lot of people do not know is that the J-20 is a multi vortex airplane. Vortexes over a wing create a suction effect that increase lift, increases the angle of attack at which the air start separating from the wing. This is so crucial that many modern fighters uses all kinds of tricks to create vortexes over their wings.
    Why delta wings are so good is because it naturally create these vortexes because of the way the wing is angled backward. LERX as seen on jets like F-18, the Sukhois all have LERX to create these vortexes. F-16s are actually cropped deltas. Another way to create vortex is to use canards. This is why delta canards are so popular and such a superior configuration. The delta wing is coupled to the canard and they work together to increase the overall maneuverability of the jet. The LERX on the J-20 is itself a vortex generator as you can see in many J-20 videos. What most people don't understand is that unlike the Eurocanards, the J-20 is a canard is positioned more forward from the delta wing as a loose coupled delta-canard and this is done so because of the combination with the LERX.
    Most of the vortex over the main delta wing is generated by the delta wing itself and the LERX. The canard also generate vortexes but they go over the main delta wing loosely and thus create even more suction effect that allows the J-20 to hit such high AOA despite being such a large plane. The vortexes from both the LERX and the canard also hit the vertical stabilizer at the back. This means the vert stab also benefit from the suction effect of a vortex, which reduces turbulence and increases its flight control authority. Having the canard as a control surface also allows the vertical stab to be much smaller, compared to fighters like F-22 and F-35 which needed the large vert stabs to create the same amount of control. The vert stab surface areas are huge radar reflectors at many angles, a fact that many Americans just hand wave away. It is also why the J-20 does not need the heavy thrust vectoring with more points-of-failure like the F-22 to achieve the same level of maneuverability.
    When you think about it, it really shows just how much innovation has gone into the J-20 aerodynamics design that allows it to be a stealthy delta canard without losing its maneuverability that comes naturally from being a delta-canard. Delta-canard give superior control over conventional configuration. What the people at Chengdu really did a great job at designing the J-20 and incorporate the natural advantages of the delta canard while not sacrificing its stealthiness. It also shows just the immense expertise over these aerodynamic concepts and engineering the designers have.

      That is why the US 6th gen aircraft tend to have a similar wing planform to that of J-20 (without vertical tails though). This is the best wing planform for jet fighter I think.

    • @sparkzbarca
      @sparkzbarca Před 2 měsíci +4

      @@kalas2320 first off, you've never seen a US sixth Gen aircraft. So there's that.
      Secondly the Chinese Bomber unveiled earlier this year is as close as they could get it to cloning a US B2 bomber, a bomber which the US has already replaced and which is nearly 35 years old.
      So the idea that the US is copying Chinese design is wild.
      Also canards are bad for stealth compared to traditional stabilizers.
      That's because when you have a rotating surface like a canard out front when a radar wave hits it, even if the canards themselves are stealthy the leading edge breaks up and sends the radar return wrapping around in ways that are unpredictable across the full range of moment from the full range of possible radar directions. But if the stabilizer is the last thing with nothing behind it then it doesn't matter.
      The most likely reason for the canards is the j20 engine. Canards increase lifting over standard verticals and China is still forced to use old Russian engines (though they did recently steal some US B2 bomber engine tech, which fair enough, espionage is a thing)
      Everyone including the US is struggling to meet the demands of generating enough electrical power for all the sensors and radar and computers and communications equipment onboard while also providing the thrust needed to propel the aircraft in a reasonable package.
      China has much worse engines and so it saved on lifting force to help power more stuff.
      As to why they didn't just increase wing surface area, they want to be able to fit it on a boat.

      @@sparkzbarca I never say they copy each other. Copying an existing aircraft is far more difficult than developing it from scratch if you know how aircraft design works.
      According to the program Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) fighters, Boeing and Lockheed Martic have shown their conceptual configurations for the 6th gen aircraft. Yes, I saw them from news, which nowadays is not a reliable source anymore. But the thing is a 6th gen fighter will be flying-wing-like rather than a conventional cofiguration like F-22 or F-35 because very low observability (VLO) is the first priority. The J-20 configuration is arguably the best jet fighter wing planform aerodunamically. Unlike J-20, the canards and stabilisers of 6th gen fighters are foldable and used only when supermaneuverability is needed. I think the Chinese's 6th gen is gonna have similar configuration and concepts. They are now catching up with the US.
      Both countries have done much research on flying wing configurations (see X-56A from Lockheed Martin's youtube channel). The main issue is its stability from missing vertical stabilisers and structural flexiblity. So, there have been research topics like aeroservoelasticity, body freedom flutter, etc. I won't say they copy each other but there definitely are best aircraft configurations for a given mission and flight conditions requirements. A stealth bomber will just look like B-2 if you focus on VLO. They and other top countries know what to do but it depends on who have enough budgets, manufacturing capability, and human resource.

      Even the Russians, at some point, went crazy with the idea of the Chinese copying their jets. However, one must know that Russians actually sold their licenses to Chinese factories since the beginning in the 1950s. And, as the new world began in 1992, they realized that diplomacy is better than wishing for a war with your neighbor (afghan lesson).
      If they were copying, its because it was a legal deal. The J-15 was basically Ukrainians selling their rights on the SU-27, for example, in the 1990s. Let Zely talk about the bullshit of war now hehehe.

    As a Chinese-born American, I consume both western and Chinese military assessments. Firstly, I respect you for presenting mostly facts and otherwise viewpoints that both sides agree with.
    I think there are two disagreements though, would you be willing to share your thoughts?
    (1) J-20: The domestic 10 engine is not intended to achieve supersonic cruise, that's the domestic 15 engine. The 10 engine is operational as shown in your video, but the 15 engine is still in testing, and is encountering manufacturing line issues mostly around precision.
    (2) J-20: Most western analysts, including General Ken Wilsbach, commander of the US pacific Air Force, believe that the J-20 was designed as a multi-role stealth bomber (similar in role to F-35) that can do air-superiority, rather than a pure air-superiority machine. That explains the J-20's tiny estimated RCS from the front (as bombing machines would mostly be straight-in) versus relatively larger (by some estimates 2000-50000 times larger than F-22, a pure air-superiority fighter) RCS from other angles. You stated in your video however that the J-20 was designed as an air-superiority fighter. You also did not mention the RCS shortcomings if it were indeed designed in that role.
    Believe me, I have nothing but love for China, it's my birth country. But I'm also an American. You can imagine my cognitive dissonance. But I find that the most respected generals in both these countries value and offer objective analyses, so while I believe we can disagree on geopolitical strategy and military doctrine, we do both the countries a service by making sure we get the facts correct.

    • @EurasiaNaval
      @EurasiaNaval  Před 2 měsíci +5

      On point one, I am sure I said upfront that the ultimate J20 power plant is the ws15, and that it is that engine that will provide supercruise and thrust vector control. Ws10 is just an interim. I dont talk about the RCS because it is very speculative - people will believe what they want, and I'm not going to take US sources at face value. What I can say for certain is that the J20 is intended to be an air superiority fighter, according to a recently revealed documentation written 19 years ago.

    • @ajaykumarsingh702
      @ajaykumarsingh702 Před 2 měsíci

      If I am not mistaken, WS-15 is already in mass production and many J-20s are already integrated with the new engines.
      Other than that the role of J-20 is debatable but its capabilities are well recognised.
      Others can only guess how PLAAF will utilize it.
      It is definitely a threat when engaged because to shoot it down a lock-in is very necessary and it's stealth aspect will definitely make it harder with angles constantly changing in air.

    • @jimbojet
      @jimbojet Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@EurasiaNavalah sorry, I indeed misheard on point one, or rather I missed your callout to WS 15 so I assumed you were still talking about WS 10. That was my mistake.
      Regarding the second point, first of all, thanks for your thorough response and for supplying your arguments.
      I agree on your first statement, which is that RCS is notoriously difficult to measure, and that I also don't take western sources at face value.
      I don't agree with your conclusion however, for a few reasons:
      I somewhat believe (personal opinion) that from a game theory perspective, the US military is incentivized to oversell Chinese military capability while underselling its own in order to procure more funding, whereas the Chinese military may be (slightly) incentivized to oversell its capability to satisfy both the government and the people.
      The above said, the US commander stated bluntly (and publicly) that the J-20 essentially evaded detection head-on by current US E-3 planes, so that obviously is a more important metric than RCS (i.e. real world, the J-20 did its job). So, the US is not even claiming that the J-20 cannot evade detection, and in fact openly admitted that their systems were defeated. The US commander also admitted that the J-20 could engage US assets beyond visual range with the Chinese radar plane as sighting.
      The above is the reason that I have no reason to doubt US studies / espionage sources that allude to the J-20's estimated 5 square meter RCS. (1) The US never claims that such a metric matters in various real-world combat situations, and (2) the US is candid about China's capabilities and ability to command and control their planes being impressive. Given the above, I still feel that it's disingenuous on your part to not even mention the RCS, and to simply write it off as "western sources". Frankly, let's not bullshit each other, the US and China are both dishonest, but it's hard to see how the US benefits from lying about this, while it's easy to see how China benefits from hiding it.
      Re the role of the J-20, I don't necessarily see that western sources benefit from misrepresenting the role of the J-20, but I also don't see that China would benefit from misrepresenting the role of the J-20 either, so I simply won't contest your point that J-20 was designed to be an air superiority fighter, and I also don't think that fully rules out western educated guesses about any re-purposing of the J-20 in its current military strategy. I would guess that when the J-31 comes into service, those assumptions will change, as the J-31 appears on paper to be a much more capable multi-role fighter/bomber.

    • @jimbojet
      @jimbojet Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@EurasiaNavalI should note that I'm very proud of China's ability to produce the J-20, and even as a USian, I'm not alone in being impressed by China essentially catching up 3-4 generations in the span of two decades. In classic American style however, I simply want to assert and dissect any potential flaws, as we Americans frequently do with our own military assets. I know this can be seen as impertinent questioning or even disrespectful in Chinese culture, so I want to clearly state why I am questioning.

    • @EurasiaNaval
      @EurasiaNaval  Před 2 měsíci +9

      @@jimbojet I will write a much shorter response to your long post - hope that's OK. If you feel I was been disingenious by not talking about RCS, I will reject that categorically. How you feel about my intentions is not something I can control - that's entirely your concern and not mine. I will only remind you that I know my own motives far better than you do.
      I also mostly reject your assertion that the US has an incentive to overstate Chinese military capability. Different US entities have different incentives to both overstate and underestimate Chinese capabilities for a wide range of different reasons. It is inaccurate to say the incentives go one way only. A politician, military official, journalist or think tank who want to boost morale and their own support base may well be incentivised to understate Chinese capabilities to achieve that. We see American pundits have underestimated Russia in 2022/23, to be proven entirely wrong.
      It is also wrong to say the Chinese military are inclined to overstate their capabilities. This is simply not how they operate. Why do you think there is a scarcity of information on Chinese weapons? It's because the Chinese military themselves give very little information about their own assets, especially when it comes to new systems. This is also why there is so much disinformation floating around. Unlike Western and Russian militaries, the PLA does not provide a source of truth for others to engage with, so people will come in and fill the data vacuum with their own opinions, for better or worse. Good PLA watchers will try to identify reliable sources and insider accounts to try to get closer to the truth. Rather than say the PLA exaggerate their own capabilities, the far more accurate statement is that the PLA hides it as much as possible.
      I might not post any further replies - hope that's OK.

      i think Philippines are on a edge of joining United States and provocative China, at this time, China tend to give some kind of warn and let them know how is it feel to be a Cuba near United States coastline, however if they really decide to be a Cuba near United States, those things United States do to Cuba, China knows these things and will actually do as American do
      China do not want a Cuba so we give warns first, however, China is not going to decide for Philippines to be or not to be, the decisions are made by Philippines, we are sure they are as tough as those in Cuba, they will pay for the decision as Cuba pay it, and we also expect United States, support Philippines as how Soviet Union support Cuba, people in middle east knows how do Americans support their allies

How many times more powerful is the conformal antenna of the kj3000 than the outdated antenna of the E7. The true strength of the PLA can only be known by making a horizontal comparison of the US military's fighter planes. radar wave will reflect back by planes so radar can see a remote plane
      and radar cross section is something describe how strong the reflected radar waves are, bigger RCS means more radar waves will be reflected back to radar, that means planes are less stealthy
      RCS is affected by many reasons, and is different from different directions, basically the shape of a plane do affect directions where radar waves will be reflected and make it less radar waves or more will be reflected back to radar, and how much radar waves will be absorbed by the plane it self will decide how strong the reflected radar waves are

    some pros you left out
    the vast number of complex high altitude drones china has are likely to be extremely useful to j20s very long range kill chain, especially if satellites capability are degraded
    the j20 really is an awac killer with its extremely long range air to air missiles. this is a big superiority of western air forces that was never threatened in past conflicts like iraq
    the j10 is a more agile f16, very likely to out maneuver missiles better than the legendary f16's performance in past conflicts
    the china rocket force's vast array of very long range missiles should not be left out in an assessment of chinas air force as they complement each other in any future pacific conflict
    some cons worth mentioning
    chinas engine mfg ability has not yet been demonstrated, as would be the case if they produced a single engine 5th gen like f35
    j20 has a high thermal signature from the rear and its canards are a bit of a contradiction to its stealth and long range role imo.
    china is still lacking in number enough aerial refueling platforms. ideally they would be developing a stealthy drone to do this job like the usa.
    their strategic bombers are not able to safely fly with a very heavy payload. imo not a very modern design. this would not be as big of an issue if they had more refueling capability.

    • @EurasiaNaval
      @EurasiaNaval  Před 2 měsíci +19

      A few quick thoughts (only on points I don't fully agree with):
      1. While the J-20 can target AWAC, it should be seen as an air superiority fighter first and foremost, one that is designed to engage F-22 and F-35 in aerial combat. This is the documented intention behind the J-20, not an interceptor role.
      2. J-20 has been mostly upgraded with serrated WS-10C and (in some few cases) WS-15 engines. The serrated nozzle is a key improvement that will reduce thermal signature from the rear.
      3. Canard is not viewed as a contradiction to stealth by top stealth aircraft designers. Chengdu Aerospace is one of them too. So are Boeing and Lockheed. The Joint Strike Fighter program used canards early on before dropping them. Boeing recently unveiled a stealth drone with canards. If such a contradiction exists, canards won't have been considered.
      4. I'm not really convinced F-35's engine is actually 5th gen. Sure, it provides high thrust, but it cannot do supercruise (an enabler of stealth in key respects), which is something aimed for in the WS-15.

      The west may be pooring billions of dollars into Ukraine, but Russia is also spending billions of dollars themselves. And they have legacy Soviet era equipment that has already been paid for.

      "Their advantage only is their loading capacity & its missile ranges"
      That's how approximately 95% of so called "dogfights" are won these day's though, pilot training matters too of course.

    1. The J-20 is not a cutting edge 5th Gen fighter. It's a 4.5 Gen mild stealth fighter. It competes with the f35, not the F22.
    2. Even if the J-20 catches up with the f35, it'll only be catching up to early 2000s tech. It won't catch up with the F22. Nevermind the F22 super raptor whenever it enters service.
    3. 300 J-20s is under half of the current fleet of 600 plus f35s and less than an a 8th of the planned 2400 f35s.
    4. China operates 67 Y-20s. The vast majority of these are not refuelers. The US has 563 refuelers not counting smaller air frames that can share fuel like the f15.
    5. China does match the US with AWACs. China has 30. The US has 31.
    6. China has roughly 300 mi-17s and 500 attack helicopters. The US has 1900 Blackhawks alone. The US has about 1200 attack helicopters. This doesn't include AH6/Uh6 little birds that are used mostly in SF. Neither does it include utility choppers like the hundreds of Chinook.00
    Ultimately, this numbers game doesn't matter. The reality is the PLAA is a weak force. It's pilots don't get enough flight time. They have zero combat experience. Their equipment is outdated bad copies of 20-30 year old western equipment at best or 50-70 year old copies of Soviet technology at worst. They can hardly project power off their own coasts, much less globally.
    Also, I noticed you failed to even mention China's carrier. This is probably for the best. After all, their carrier is a fair weather, warm water, carrier.

    大概是因为中国登月的原因,被真正重视了。
    以前看油管毫无道理的贬低诋毁中国武器,还觉得挺有意思的。 其实我们中国挺喜欢被低估实力的。 不被重视,就不会被视为威胁。
