- EA Sports WRC has been released and it is the sequel to both WRC Generations and Dirt Rally 2.0, being the latest official WRC game but also the latest rally game by Codemasters. To celebrate the release I am proud to present you one of my biggest video projects ever, showing off rally gameplay in 50 (!) different racing games from the past 25 years, featuring CMR, V-Rally, WRC, Dirt, Rallisport Challenge, Sega Rally, Richard Burns Rally and many more. For the release of Dirt Rally 2 I made a video with 20 different rally games and it was very well received, so for the release of EA Sports WRC I decided to make a sequel. My first plan was to show 40 different games this time but when creating my list I realized that I might even be able to show 50, so I decided to go for that and I am proud that I was able to pull it off.
This should be one of the biggest rally gameplay compilations on CZcams now and even big rally game fans will probably see at least a couple of games here that they haven't played yet. :)
WRC had 5 official games on the PS2 developed by Evolution Studios, who later worked on Motorstorm and Driveclub. The PS3 era saw 4 WRC games by Milestone and the PS4 era saw 7 WRC games by Kylotonn. Now Codemasters took over the license and created the 17th mainline WRC game with EA Sports WRC. There were also a few spinoffs over the years with WRC Arcade and WRC Powerslide.
In the past Codemasters created 5 mainline Colin McRae Rally games (and one mobile remake that was later ported to Steam) and a total of 8 Dirt games, although Dirt Showdown and Dirt 5 didn't feature rally gameplay. They also included some rally events in TOCA Race Driver 3, which is the predecessor of the first Grid game.
Another well known franchise is Sega Rally, which saw a total of 5 games, although Sega Rally 2006 was exclusive to Japan. There were also some Japan-exclusive rally games on the PS1 like Rally de Africa and Rally de Europe.
V-Rally was another popular franchise in the PS1 era and it actually got a 4th entry after more than 15 years. Rallisport Challenge is a series that brought two awesome games to the original Xbox.
Richard Burns Rally and Sébastien Loeb Rally Evo are two games that appeal more to the sim racing audience. Tommi Mäkinen Rally on the other hand is a very arcady game for the PS1.
Xpand Rally and Rush Rally are series from smaller developers but they can still be fun and they are available on Steam for low prices during sales.
There are also many one-off rally games, especially on the PS2 and on PC, like Rally Fusion or Rally Trophy. It should go without saying that even this video is still far from showing every rally game that exists but it does show most of the most notable ones and even a lot of obscure ones as well.
You can also find rally gameplay in several racing games that are not mainly about rally, like Forza Horizon 5, TOCA Race Driver 3 and many of the Gran Turismo games.
The goal of this video is to show rally gameplay in exactly 50 different games, featuring a co-driver reading pace notes. As a car I am using the iconic blue Subaru Impreza sedan in every game that features it and a different Japanese car in the others. As a track I am always using a gravel location with green surroundings like Finland or New Zealand or whatever else is available that is somewhat close to that in terms of look.

The Colin McRae games were always my favorites back then. The perfect "feel" of physics of the time and for the controller the PSX had.

I loved Rally Evolved. I must've been 10 of 11 when I played the demo on one of those demo discs my older brother used to get. I wasn't even that into racing games at the time, so I'm pretty sure this was the first racing game that I bought with my own money

Rallisport Challenge. Still the most fun.
The sequel was way better. So if you still have your Xbox get it immediately you won 't be disappointed.

Man, I feel nostalgic watching this compilation, the first rally game I played was Rallisport Challenge on OG Xbox and I've come quite a long way from Dirt to WRC
I am playing V rally on the gameboy, what a legend.
And it s insane the graphics level on the 2000s games. Dirt 2, which is a 15 years old game, has graphics almost as good as todays games. Insane.

Dirt 2 was a huge environment quality win. It was the first time the racing genre really got a detail boost and love as much as the cars did.

We've gone a long way. My first rally game was V-Rally 2, and I hadn't touched another until the Rally mode of FH4. Then Dirt 3, Dirt Rally 1 and 2, WRC8 and EAS WRC.
Dont forget also both PS1 RALLYCROSS games. RallyCross 2 PS1 is very good due to its track creator also.
The visual difference between Dirt and Dirt 2 is just HUGE. Back then (2005-2010) the graphics in games was advancing so fast.

For this video one of my requirements was a co-driver voice, which Art of Rally doesn't have. It also has a very different visual style compared to all the games in the video, so it would look a bit out of place here. It's definitely a cool game though. Great job with the video! Had no idea there were that many unknown rallys during ps one era, some of which look/sound quite funny nowadays🙂. I remember enjoying Colin McRae Rally a lot. I would add Tommi Mäkinen Rally, I had only a demo, but it was not bad. Then I played CMR 2 on PC, which was great successor to CMR👍.

God, I love how absurdly OP WRC cars are in most games - The 0-100kph times are all over the place and most are INSANE
· Under 7 seconds = RallyFusion (including a slight corner, probably 6-flat on a straight)
· Under 6 seconds = CMR1, KyloWRC5, EAWRC
· Under 5 seconds = V-Rally 1, CMR05, WRC4, WRCEvolved (4-flat going downhill), SEGARallyOnline, DiRT3, PS3WRC4 (couple of slight corners, should be under 5"), CMR2Remake (same as PS3WRC4), LoebRally, DiRT4, RushRally3
· Under 4 seconds = V-Rally 2, WRC1 (barely over 3"), Rallisport1, WRC3, RBR, DiRT1, DiRT2, PS3WRC1, PS3WRC2 (it was barely over 4" including a jump), DiRTRally1, DiRTRally2, KyloWRC10, ForzaHorizon5
· Under 3 seconds = Rally de Europe, CMR2.0, ProRally, Rally Championship, WRCArcade, WRC2, CMR3, CMR04, SEGARally06, RaceDriver3, V-Rally4,
· Under 2 seconds = Rally de Africa, V-Rally3 (1,25)
SPECIAL MENTIONS
· Mobil1RC gives a freaking 1300cc Micra a 0-100kph time of just barely 4" on dirt
· Xpand Rally didn't do a clean 0-100kph run but it looks like it should be barely over 6"
· Xpand Rally Extreme didn't do a clean 0-100kph run either, it might be 5-flat or faster
· PS3 WRC3 didn't do a clean 0-100kph run either, it should be under 5"
· All the Toyotas in Kylotonn WRC games went under 3"
When it comes to traction and overall torque+power, rally games are "bullshit" to say the least with even recent supposedly-realistic games transforming 300hp 50kg/m cars into legit rocket ships. I'm positively surprised by many older games and absolutely appalled by some well-known titles including RBR, the DiRT Rally games and many beloved classics. Who would've guessed that freaking Rally Fusion would be so accurate?
PS: You skipped several great titles like the final RAC Rally game (predecessor to Mobil1RC and only game to ever include a full-length WRC round), SEGA Rally 2, Rally Masters (predecessor to Rally Fusion), Rallisport 2 and others.
V-rally 2 and Pro Rally 2002 such underrated games!
Congratulations on the video, since you have put a lot of work into it.
The rally games that I remember trying with my own hands were the following:
- Colin McRae Rally 2.0 and 04, ToCA Race Driver 2 (which contained rally stages), and Xpand Rally for PC
- Colin McRae Rally 3, Pro Rally 2002 and Gran Turismo 4 for PS2
- Sebastien Loeb Rally Evo, V-Rally 4, WRC 5 (2015), Gran Turismo Sport and 7, and DiRT Rally 1 for PS4.
Parallel to this, I propose an idea. The idea is to make a video containing cars from the Dakar Rally (ToCA 3, WRC 3 (2003, obviously), CMR 2005, etc.).
For me i basically loved every single rally game especially both CMR PS1 games and both RallyCross PS1 games.

But some are missing, examples of it: Rally Trophy (PC Game from 2001), PRO Rally 2001 (PC Game 2000), the original SEGA Rally Championship (Sega Model 2 from 1994).
I am glad to hear that you liked the video. However, please don't say that something is "missing" when it is not shown in a video like this. Otherwise you make it sound as if the author made a mistake, when in reality those things were probably just not a part of his plan for the video. Instead if you want to shout out additional games you should say "some other cool rally games are..." or something like that. That would be a much better wording. :)
Also which games from the video are your favorites? It would be much more appreciated if you would talk about some of the things in the video, rather than mentioning things that are not in the video, especially under a video with so many different things in it, which probably took the author a very long time to make. The last thing that the author wants to see in the comments of such a video is people talking about things that are not in the video.

I played around 15 of these... the ones that impressed me the most were Colin Mcrae Rally 4 and 5 as well as DIRT.

Dirt 2 was waaaaaaaaaaaaay ahead of it's time. It feels and controls a lot better than EA Sports WRC. Dirt 2 and DIrt Rally 1 is Codemaster's best rally games imo.

I also still remembered the 2010 WRC PS3. It surprisingly had very high level of gameplay depth like EA SPORTS WRC.
Dirt rally is probably my favourite overall as it has great ffb and still looks great today
it's crazy how much the sounds improve/get worse on some of these games. A lot of the older ones sounded crazy but lacked other things, while other games did amazing everywhere but lacked the good sound. I wish i didn't care so much about sound sometimes, i don't play a lot of games because either the co-driver bothers me or the engines don't sound "punchy" enough and not enough turbo whine lol. Eh, all amazing games regardless! Nice video! Persoanlly loved the classics, especially anything Codemasters touched, they have the touch of gold for racing.
and after all these games, i still play only Richard Burns Rally

I am glad to hear that you liked the video. What were the games that you didn't know existed though? It would have been much better if you had mentioned those by name instead of mentioning games that aren't even in the video. It really makes me sad how many people in this comment section want to talk about games that are NOT in the video instead of any of the 50 games that are actually in it, which I spent weeks selecting, obtaining and recording. I really don't like that and I don't understand why people keep doing this under my videos. On most other CZcams channels people comment on the things that ARE in the videos and I wish that it was the same on my channel as well.

@@ajrichar0 The video is 100% complete as it is, as it shows 50 different games, which is exactly the number of games that I targeted. It sounds like you are suggesting that with your two games it would then show every rally game that exists but that's far from the case. There are still quite a few more. I am even mentioning several of them myself in the description, like Rally Trophy, Rallisport Challenge 2 and the other Sega Rally games. And I also mention Tommi Mäkinen Rally.
I am completely aware that there are more rally games and I even own several of them myself. I intentionally selected exactly 50 games for the video because that's a nice round number of games to show. It seems like a lot of people are misunderstanding the goal of the video and think that I was trying to show every rally game that exists but that was never my goal at all. People are criticizing me for not achieving something that I was never even trying to achieve. And I don't understand why so many people are not understanding the actual goal because from my perspective the title of the video is very very clear and leaves no room for interpretation, lol.
The fact that rush rally is originally from mobile game and it's one-man made makes me highly appreciate it although it doesn't have official licensed cars

I remember being only 3 playing V-Rally 1 at my grandparents’ house (18 now). Not sure how the hell I understood any of it, but I guess I was too stubborn to not do it right. I really hope I make my 3 year old self proud and get in the driver’s seat of these cars.
Rush Rally 3, for a mobile game....the graphics sure does look like DiRT Rally. A lot more pleasing to the eyes to look at than WRC Generations. Of course what's more important is the gameplay, so I might give that mobile rally game a try. Watching this video really took me back when I've tried all kinds of PS2 rally games besides Codemasters, so far I'm liking the Rally Championship (2002)
As sad as I am that the arcade Sega Rally 2 is missing from this video, it's great!
Such a shame RalliSport Challenge 2 never received a PC port or got included in the Xbox backwards compatibility program, that game is the GOAT
Completely agree. It's still my favourite rally game of all time! And would be a lot of other peoples to if they had the chance to play it.
A great collection and really shows the evolution of the genre in terms of physics, environment and graphics. Sorry to see my personal favourite, Bugbear's 2001 Rally Trophy, wasn't included as it was groundbreaking in many regards, not least being that it was purely 60s/70s/80s cars. I also remember Mobil1 looking *much* better on the PC, loved the punishing stage lengths that were much more realistic than the 2 minute sprints seen in most other games.
I actually have a copy of Rally Trophy as well. I think it was the first rally game that I ever played on PC. I didn't pick it as one of the 50 games for this video because it would have been the only game without a Japanese car and also the only game with a pre-90s car. I do remember it being a quality game though. Maybe there will be some other video project in the future for which it will be a good fit or I can just make an individual video about it some day. It's definitely a game that I am aware of. :)

CMR 2005 has one big flaw - no championship mode. You cannot just enter a season and play all available rallies... so disappointing

Great compilation, but boy oh boy, Mobil 1 Rally and CMR 2.0 looked a looot better on the PC. Showing them as PS versions is a bit disadvantageous ;)

@@ParagleiberThat Sega Rally Online is based on Revo. You could dig ruts in the sand/dirt and then next lap use those ruts to drive faster through the corner. Fantastic tech which sadly seem to have been forgotten, well apart from in the Mudrunner series.

Colin.... CMR 3,4,5, Dirt 2 was my favourite. Since Dirt 3 it started to collapse for me. Glass on cars started to bend instead of breaking. Dirt 4 - generated tracks with same curves repeating over and over again. Dirt Rally & Dirt Rally 2 - too hard to enjoy gamepad gameplay. WRC 10 & WRC Generations - broken bump physics - that remind me frameskipping or gta V curb physx (not racing DLC, just the city roaming, where you drive on curb and car wheel is teleported on curb with no suspension work). WRC from EA - back to the past to Dirt 2/3.
Right now im thinking about Sebastian Loeb Racing EVO - terrible sound, but gameplay wise? I havent really tried, but got it in library.
Best overall physics and handling chronologically :
1. Sega rally championship (So ahead of its time, such a pleasure to drive to this day)
2. Colin Mcrae 2.0
3. Gran turismo 3
4. WRC 4 ? (Not sure about this one, tried to play it on pcsx2 but handling is somewhat broken. The physics and stage layout do look good though)
5. Richard Burns Rally
6 Dirt Rally
7. Haven't played a rally game sint Dirt rally.

People seems to forget the rally expansion from the first Forza Horizon. It was very very good, much better rally spinoff than FH5 rally expansion. It even had Co-Driver calls, just like a real rally game.
I don't think that people forget about it. Many people just never got the chance the play it in the first place. It was only available as a digital download from 2012 until 2016 and only on Xbox consoles. People who only got an Xbox after 2016 were not able to buy it anymore.

My best three are Wrc 4 (ps2), the first Colin Mcrae (psone) and Dirt 3. And I will include the Michelin Race of Champions from PC, one of my favourite.
This video shows how the graphics and driving physics have evolved, but Richard Burns Rally still wins and wins. Was the best for me 👍💪👏🤪💯🇵🇱😜
What I notice is how long the engine sound was bad, not even close to what a real engine would sound. It takes away from the immersion in the game IMO.

Rallisport challenge on Pc was a cracker @60fps baybay yeaaaah! My old Compaq caught fire playing that game. I was living in an un-insulated tin shed in 46 degrees plus summer heat in Central West Australia. Anyone remeber Compaq? WTF happened to them?

Evolution Studios' WRC games and the Rallisport Challenge games are my favourites, but I'm really enjoying the new EA Sports WRC atm. I love how tight the controls feel and how long its stages are.
(Dirt 4 was fun but the randomly generated tracks and repetitive content became such a slog. Considering what happened with Dirt 5, I can't say I mourn the franchise's demise tbh.)
