  • Mafalda Duarte, executive director of the Green Climate Fund, gave the 2024 Barbara Ward Lecture on 14 May, when the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) also launched its manifesto for a thriving world.
In honour of IIED’s founder Barbara Ward’s pioneering work in sustainable development and the inspiration she gave to many in the field, IIED invites members of the current generation of outstanding women in development to present their thoughts on the pressing issues of our time.
The Green Climate Fund is the world’s largest multilateral climate fund. For decades, Duarte has challenged business as usual to drive innovative and pioneering development and climate-responsive investments globally.
Duarte, formerly CEO of Climate Investment Funds, called for a solidarity pact between developed and developing countries.
The lecture was followed by a question-and-answer session with Tara Shine, the chair of IIED's board of trustees, who also introduced the manifesto and a short film.
Then James Persad, IIED's director of communications, took a closer look at the contents and maps out the institute's key focus areas of changed way of working for the coming years.
