The Marvelettes - Too Many Fish In The Sea

- Probably the most pop-oriented of Motown's major female acts, the Marvelettes didn't project as strong an identity as the Supremes, Mary Wells, or Martha Reeves, but recorded quite a few hits, including Motown's first number one single, "Please Mr. Postman" (1961). "Postman," as well as other chirpy early-'60s hits like "Playboy," "Twistin' Postman," and "Beechwood 4-5789," were the label's purest girl group efforts. Featuring two strong lead singers, Gladys Horton and Wanda Young, the Marvelettes went through five different lineups, but maintained a high standard on their recordings. After a few years, they moved from girl group sounds to up-tempo and mid-tempo numbers that were more characteristic of Motown's production line. They received no small help from Smokey Robinson, who produced and wrote many of their singles; Holland-Dozier-Holland, Berry Gordy, Mickey Stevenson, Marvin Gaye, and Ashford-Simpson also got involved with the songwriting and production at various points. After the mid-'60s Wanda Young assumed most of the lead vocal duties; Gladys Horton departed from the group in the late '60s. While the Marvelettes didn't cut as many monster smashes as most of their Motown peers after the early '60s, they did periodically surface with classic hits like "Too Many Fish in the Sea," "Don't Mess With Bill," and "The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game." There were also plenty of fine minor hits and misses, like 1965's "I'll Keep Holding On," which is just as memorable as the well-known Motown chart-toppers of the era. The group quietly disbanded in the early '70s after several years without a major hit. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide

This song should be an anthem for women who are or have been in abusive relationships. Good advice for any woman.
Another one gone. 😢 Rest In Peace Wanda Rogers Young (1943-2021), along with Gladys Horton (1944-2011) and Georgeanna Tillman (1943-1980). 🙏🏾
The Marvelette Legend Katherine Anderson 🌹🙏🏼💐RIP & thank you for the great music 💗🎙🎸
Those girls nailed this one. This should have been a bigger hit.
This is one of those irresistible upbeat Motown hits by this under appreciated group!
They were one of more talented acts that Motown had but the most neglected group.
John1948NineB...The Marvelettes "were" Motown and there's good argument that without The Marvelettes there may well have been no Motown at all. By 1961Gordy was "running on fumes" he had almost no money and very few successful artists were beating his door down to sign a recording deal. Along came The Marvelettes and with their first song they scored a Number One hit on Billboard...not on the R&B Charts but on Billboard! This did two things for Gordy, it gave him much needed capital as well as instant recognition among recording artists. Lots of underhanded things behind the scenes at Motown hurt the very girls who in effect were the lifeblood of Motown in the early 1960's! Very "cold business" that they have never been given all that they truly deserve. Lots of girls came after The Marvelettes, but there will never be any group of girls more special and deserving of being put on a pedestal than The Marvelettes...PERIOD!
Girls Anthem for 2019! There's short ones, tall ones, fine ones, kind ones! Send it to someone in need of real love 🤳👊
Marvelettes are one of the GREATEST groups in Rock & Soul History!!Blessed with 2 lead singers, Gladys Horton & Wanda Young Rogers.
And Ann Bogan too
@@DavidSmith-cx9cu yes, Ann is GREAT but she was hired as Gladys' replacement which was past their hit-making days, unfortunately.

This song will always be #1...Gladys knew how to throw it and Katherine/Wanda were taking it home
Yes. I agree Gladys really knew how to throw it. Which is why I don't understand why this was the last time Gladys sang lead on an A side. After this, Wanda was assigned all leads on all A side releases.
Gladys was great but those Wanda A sides my god!
The MARVELETTE the best female group in the sixties at Motown if not the best 🎉🎉

HAPPY 75TH BIRTHDAY KATHERINE ANDERSON (JANUARY 16, 2019)
way cool, 4 ever - first 'moving' ladies group1
Love it still speaks for today!!
Like so many Motown hits from the '60s, what made this song so great was the track. The Funk Brothers had it goin' on.
+rbvo, they could dance and sing, please don't downplay their talent. The only reason that the Supremes got more attention is because Gordy had a torrid affair with Diana Ross.
+Gail Gruenburg Oh no, don't take my comment as even the slightest diss of the girls' talent. I'm really just complimenting the musicians who played on this, and all of those incredible Motown tracks. I don't think anybody who appreciates Motown music (and I certainly am someone who does) can listen to it and not marvel about the incredible musicianship by the people who played on the tracks, who we would later learn had become dubbed "the Funk Brothers." The Marvelettes, the Supremes, the Miracles, the Temptations, the Four Tops, Marvin Gaye -- all of them -- were extraordinarily talented, no question about it. But the unheralded ones -- and the ones who played on ALL the Motown hits -- were the Funk Brothers. They were on more hit records than Elvis, the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones and the Four Seasons COMBINED! You could say it was a perfect storm of talent, musicianship, showmanship, vision and direction.
+Gail Gruenburg Oh yes, IMO they were the female version of The Temptations.
rbvo yes indeed
crushing
We are lucky to find any video at all of The Marvelettes. I grew up listening to them and unfortunately I saw all the hate back then that has come around to the 21st century 😢. I will always love The Marvelettes as others do, and may they all Rest in Peace 🙏✌️❤️🌼

@shmuli9 Yes, shmuli9, just before Teen Town went off the air and "Swingin' Time started. True it was broadcast from the CKLW Windsor, Ont. studio. I can't remember the school they were honoring but I think it was a school in the north eastern part of Detroit. One of my old friends says it was Eastern High but I really doubt that.
Great Song! These Women Are So Beautiful! Jesus Loves You My Friends! John 3:16
Was this from 'Teen Town', the Detroit TV show (though it was broadcast from Windsor)?
NOT IN THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME!!
looks like frankie lyman in the audience wearing the letter sweater...
also covered by mitch ryder and the detroit wheels.
