  • This video provides three methods on how to replace camera coverings that have failed or been lost, or just to make a camera look different. The first process shows how to replace a Polaroid SX-70 covering (after remval) with pre-cut coverings. Coverings like those can be foudn at either Akia Asahi or CameraLeather.com.
The second method is to take coverings from a parts-grade camera of the same model and swap the coverings. That methods provides great results as it uses OEM parts.
The thirs methods is to make your own coverings if you want a sepcialized material or don't have the coverings already. This method uses tape to create a template. The shape is then cut out using the template, refined on the camera body, and placed onto the camera when done.

Fantastic! I love that photo, too. I took a series of really striking photos on the same day -- that one, a borzoi profile, a Rhodesign ridgeback -- at the same dog show. The dalmatian shot has always stood out to me.

    Thanks for showing this, David.
Old wallets or even handbags can make for a stylish leatherette makeover as well, as long as the leather is thin enough. I prefer pretty outworn wallets because due to heavy usage the material hardly tends to shrink any further. An old filofax cover once also worked well.
Re video topics: With nothing special in mind, I could think of a #shorts series about photography mishaps and how to avoid them. Like: example picture, 20 seconds on what has happened and 10 seconds promotion for the channel and a longer, linked video that covers the given issue.

That's an awesome idea! Leather wallets would be perfect for this. There wouldn't even be much leftover waste from it.
Shorts, they are the big thing on YT right now. There are considerations for why I haven't done any yet. A big one is simply time. A second is that those are, as I understand them, designed to be something that creators make and upload from their cell phones -- a more immediate creator experience. I can't do that with my phone.

@@DavidHancock I've seen and watched pro-level shorts (in terms of lighting, gear used for production etc.) as well, so a cellphone doesn't seem to be obligatory. I do get the time issue, though. It was just yet another idea about how to promote your channel. I'll come up with additional or alternative ideas whenever applicable, if you don't mind :)

@@olafwDE Please do, Olaf. I burn the candle at both ends most of the time and don't always have the availability to research ways I can grow. I'm always open to suggestions.

      Thank you!
For the SX-70 covering, I ordered it from Aki-Asahki (www.aki-asahi.com/store/). For the XG-7 covering that I cut myself, I ordered it from Camera Leather (cameraleather.com/). Aki and Morgan are both great to work with, super knowledgeable, and very friendly. Aki is super responsive to e-mails and very easy to work with.
Morgan, also very responsive and easy to work with, will also accept cameras to refinish. I sent him (should have shown it in the video, dang it), a Leica iiiB that had no vulcanite on it and applied a white lizard skin (actual lizard skin, it's awesome) to the camera. He prefers to apply some of the leather coverings himself for vary hard-to-apply components. But for all the other cameras I've done with his materials, he's either sent me pre-cut pieces or sheets that I've cut.

Ohhh, I found an alpha 9 the other day but the hardened leather (plastic?) on the grip started disintegrating almost instantly. Any tips on what I can replace it with?

Whatever you'd like and think would look good. There are a couple options online for new covering materials.
