    Best/easiest way yet to draw a radius for a rocking chair. Yours is by far the easiest. A big thank you. I spent 13 yrs in sheet metal drawing and fabrication and I shoud have known. thanks again.

    Awesome! Simple ideas like this really help me understand how magnificent structures were built in the past that we need the most advanced technology to build today.

    If running the two straightedges along each pair of nails strikes a circular arc, then using only 3 nails--the end points of the baseline and the top of the center high point--to construct the straightedges will also strike a circular arc. Once the straightedges are built, remove the nail on the center high point and simply run the straightedges along the end points to strike the arc.

    Updated this post. I tried it to create large radii for the long sides of a kitchen table I'm building. It worked great! I did add the notch to hold the pencil in place, and I used a mechanical pencil for the fine point. For future projects, this will be my go-to for creating large radii.
    Thanks!!!!

    New sub! I'm a little hesitant to use this on a gate in the field though. What about the sing nail method with the tape measure?

    • @TheMuzShop
      @TheMuzShop  Před 5 lety

      I've use this for the top of a gate and turn out nice. You can do the tape nail trick too but I've sometime find that to get the right arch the nail has to be far away from the top, in some cases farther than the gate its self, which makes it hard to control...
      Thanks for the sub

    so is it a segment of a perfect circle?
    or just an arch?

    • @TheMuzShop
      @TheMuzShop  Před 4 lety

      Read the comment down below from FavStaR69 he seems to know what he's talking about.
      I've used this technique many of times and it has always worked. Thanks

  • @FavStaR69
    @FavStaR69 Před 5 lety +5

    Well this is probably ok for small woodworking projects but it is definitely not a perfect arc, what you made was 2 perfect arcs which are not a tangent of each other. In other words if you completed those lines you would have 2 circles offset by the distance of your arc height. With larger projects such as on commercial buildings or bridges this would become obvious really quick. A single perfect arc can be made by not using the high corner parallel nail and just using the 2 bottom corner nails and the nail in the middle, once the sticks are glued you can remove the middle nail and do the same process you showed but from corner to corner.

    • @TheMuzShop
      @TheMuzShop  Před 5 lety

      Thanks for watching.....Are you sure? You saying it's not a true radius arch?

    • @FavStaR69
      @FavStaR69 Před 5 lety +1

      The Muz Shop yes, don’t get me wrong it will still look good and it’s fairly close. But your technique would make each half of the arc too shallow. I just tested it in Sketchup to verify, you don’t even really need a nail at the top middle just a pencil mark to align the sticks. The only downside to my method is that longer sticks are needed to reach corner to corner.

    • @TheMuzShop
      @TheMuzShop  Před 5 lety

      @@FavStaR69 Good to know , also good to know they both will work for different situations. Maybe my method being shallower is better in small project and looks better to the eye and yours for larger objects that need to be structurally perfect . Thanks for the insight I love it....

      Can you make a video showing what you’re saying? I’m coming from a genuine curiosity. I thought this video was great but I’m only 2 months into woodworking and trying to learn as much as possible quickly. The arch he made would suffice in custom cabinets but if there’s a way to scale up I’d love to learn. Thanks muzshop and favstar!
