Love how Joe always looks like he gets an electric shock when he says “YoooOOOOOoooo!” At the intro. 😂
sizzoul here - this may not have applied during this combat but i don't think i've seen anyone use these actions during combat that can be done UNTRAINED and can give everyone a decent boon IF it works such as: aid, shove, trip, disarm, feint, grapple, tumble through, and demoralize! these can change the tide of combat immensely!
How do you know it's Spring? The Leafs are out. 😂
Lmao 😂
"Shotgun Scenario"
Thanks Joe. Ive been waiting to hear those words.
Never forget to reload.
Yeah, I have to agree with Professor Eric. The gang's 2e play has improved so very much from Joe's Emerald Spire game and the early days of the Strange Aeons 2e conversion. 2e is certainly a game on the more crunchy end of the spectrum, but compared to 1e I feel like so many of the various pieces work together in ways that make sense. So once you're familiar with how the game works it flows a lot more smoothly, and I think you guys have hit that stride now. You'll never be able to master a system so much that there's never a question, but it feels like you're passed the point where you're no longer fighting with the system and it's reflected in smoother episodes.
Can I say...my favorite show music is Side Quest Side Sesh! I love Troy singing his silly song due to his love of old show intros.
Troy.........you are an honest GM. ( I will add to this post. Wish me luck). 1) Troy sticks to the dice. 2) He tries to position players in the best position. 3) He doesn't let players get away with bullshit. "Well i would definitively cast Blah Blah. ehhhhh." 4) Hes funny. 5) Joe knew the Hedgehog was a problem for the upcoming combat.
Kickstating some in person season sounds like a good idea. Just don't fall for the trap of going crazy with stretch goals.
Hannah and Her Sisters. Nice. Also one of my favorite movies of all time. I have a copy on my shelf.
GG Troy for the playoffs. Yours truly, a Leafs fan 😂
Reposting this from the Reddit because I think you check the CZcams comments more:
Regarding combat difficulty and someone going down immediately, this will improve as you level up since HP scales faster than damage in PF2e. By about level 10 a frontliner can take two crits in a row from a PL+3 enemy and still be standing.
However, there is a common AP problem of too many combats featuring one or two high level enemies, which are much more frustrating than fights that are the same difficulty but feature multiple equal or lower level enemies. These fights are also even harder at low levels for multiple reasons:
1. There is a significant step up in creature strength that happens around level 4 to mirror PCs gaining Striking runes, so when lvl 2 PCs face a lvl 4 creature it is noticeably harder than lvl 4 PCs against a lvl 6 creature.
2. Players simply have fewer options, so it is harder to target weaknesses, target low saves, bypass special defences, or counter abilities like fly or climb speeds.
3. Fewer options also mean it is sometimes harder for players to well utilise their full turn if they haven't planned a way to do so from character creation. Monk is a great example of this, the advantage of Flurry of Blows is that you accomplish what every Martial wants to do in a turn (attack twice) with just one action. But if you don't have things to do with your other actions then they are wasted. A melee monk might stride in and out of range, but Zephyr will just be standing there with her bow. At higher levels she could be picking up spells from Archetypes, extra Monk focus spells, battle medicine or other strong skill actions, whatever.
4. Lastly, as mentioned above, health is the lowest it will be proportional to damage, so it is easy for a crit to wipe most if not all of a PCs HP. My usual expectation from a more than PL+2 enemy is they will at least crit on their first attack and then hit on their second.
I could recommend tactics to help with this, but this post is way too long already and I don't know if anyone will read it, but I will say that when they hit level 3, Buggles NEEDS to take the spell Hideous Laughter (now called Laughing Fit in the remaster). A successful save removing reactions, as long as you sustain it, is the BEST option you have to nerf a boss at low levels. Brother Ramius can also take Roaring Applause once they get to level 5, which does the same.
In my opinion, one of the root causes of a lot of AP problems is accommodating XP levelling. Most books span 3 levels, which means you need to cram almost exactly 3000 XP worth of encounters into every one. APs lean hard on high difficulty fights because there's a limit on page count, so they prefer having fewer fights that are much harder.
There isn't time to write an interesting fight with an interactable environment and unique solutions other than killing, because they need to make 30 of them. They can't carefully pace the story in a way that maximises intrigue, because if you don't kill these rats you'll be underleveled for the boss fight and will TPK.
I'd strongly recommend anyone running a Paizo AP should switch to milestone, follow the "Advancement Track" at the front of all the books to keep the fights balanced, and then just cut out about 1/3 of the fights, focusing on removing those difficult high level enemy encounters that aren't meant to be boss fights in the story. Pacing will be better, players will have more fun and feel more heroic, and there will be more time for social encounters.
Really hope Joe reads this one, great stuff here.
Big ups to you, that last part about APs especially. I was feeling this hard in my Age of Ashes campaign I'm still working through (had big breaks between books, often only play monthly in the first place).
You all are so epic! Totally wish I could make Gen Con.
Excited to hear you guys are trying out the Starfinder 2e playtest!
Does that mean another potential run of Androids and Aliens?
Stream all of those gencon shows, pleeeease! For all of us international fans that won't be able to make it!
I wish we could control that! But I'm sure many of them will be available!
Hell yeah with the Cassavetes, Troy.
Yes, you can be “unconscious” and still standing. “Standing knockouts” are pretty much the most dangerous moments of martial art sports like boxing and mma, because that next hit might kill…
It’s also a crazy terrifying feeling.
I love Starfinder The lore is some of my favorite of any system. I thought it was really awesome you could play anything in the alien archive. I'm super excited for 2E and A&A was amazing. It would be epic to have another Starfinder series From the GCP!
As far as the reasoning behind Unconsious still getting a reflex save, the reason is pretty purely mechanical. If you are unconsious, and you just have a 0 on reflex save (or AC or anything really), then if you get hit with a fireball or any other area effect, you critically fail, always, because the DC will be at least 10. Since you took damage from a critical fail, your dying condition goes up by 2, rather than just by 1. That -4 is of course still crippling, and theres a good chance you crit fail anyway, but Saves/Attack Rolls/Etc. are an abstraction of every different factor. Obviously you aren't capable of flipping out of the way, but the save is factoring in inacuracies in the casting, rubble that might be blocking the attack, sheer luck, etc.
There's also something to be said as far as what it means to be unconcious. When you get knocked unconsious due to damage, you aren't out cold. If you were, a quick burst of healing energy or a bit of first aid wouldn't have you back on your feet in seconds, ready to fight. You're incapacitated, in severe pain, bleeding out and unable to do anything to help yourself, but your body is still capable of basic reactions, albiet in a severely limited form.
Very well said, I was gonna write a comment regarding the idea that the saves and alot of various things within the game are abstractions of their respective concepts.
As soon as Troy described the scorpion monkey thing, I thought of the MTG card Thieving Amalgam. Turns out it's a snake, not scorpion for it, but I like to think that's what it looked like
Sounds like with this GCP gauntlet stuff Troy is giving us the option to feel the feeling of being a player in a 2E game 😏
You guys should really look into debuffing. Demoralize is a simple one for your cha based guys. There's always cover to find if you have low AC. Play it smart. use the enviroment.
My interpretation of being able to pass a reflex save while unconscious (at least in the sleeping example) is that the jawn you’re trying to avoid could wake you up as it approaches. Just like you might wake up if someone enters a room or if you hear something, there’s a chance you’d wake up and still be able to avoid something in time. If someone tried to hit me while I was sleeping I’d at least like to think I’d be able to avoid the initial blow!
The places where this stops making sense is when you’re unconscious from an injury or just keep the unconscious condition after the hit or whatever.
The - 4 to reflex saves "should" mean you're hardly ever passing. I think it's +/- 5 that something becomes almost literally automatic with the math in Pathfinder 2E. So unless you roll like an 18+ you're likely failing any reflex save that comes your way eating a - 4. As another poster mentioned, you're almost always going to crit fail if you get no reflex save bonus while unconscious and likely dying. Meaning an AoE after a crit is instant death without the player even gettinga chance to roll their flat check.
I’d be down for Kickstarters for shows the Naish would like to see. I wonder what Troy/Matthew/Skid would pick in the Criterion Closet
Great fod, i'm already excited for the Gen Con Shows.
Don't worry Troy. Nothing you can say can hurt Leafs fans more than the Leafs themselves. Gratz to the Bruins on squeaking by!
I could listen to Troy talk about movies for hours. Does he have Letterboxd?
Addiction is on the Gamemastery Guide, p. 12o. Anything not in the remaster defaults to the Legacy rules, because the rules are backwards compatible.
Own your morning, elevate your life. Picked up the 5am club on Troy's recommendation, and I've been loving it! What are some of the other non-fiction you have been reading?
Btw love all the content and long time listner keep killin it!
I would like if they put chapters into the videos. So people can come for the content they want out of a fodder
you want the whole thing
@@trancebodega2739 It would be nice to not have shows that you're not caught up on yet spoiled when they talk about what happened in the latest ep though.
GITT LIVE!!!
I couldnlisyen to Troy talk about Films allmday long 😂 I am also a great passionate about films (and movies)
42:13 That 8-bit vibe song is AWESOME, don't you dare touch it, Troy! :D
The only one I don't like much is the Voyagers of the Jump one, the others are all gold
What's your preference in encounter style (both as a player and a GM). One strong enemy with lots of moves/powers or a group of weaker enemies?
2:16 It's called timeflation
As far as Reflex saves while unconscious:
I have hit someone who got to near to me while sleeping. I have moved out of the way of someone walking around me while still being asleep. Some of us are not "dead to the world" while unconscious. It is possible to have a bodily reaction without consciousness getting involved.
Drugs (and addiction) was in the GMG, but that section is missing from the GM Core.
you need to remind people to like and sub, not every ep, but once in a while
Isn't the Glass cannon Podcast intro a 90s jazz Sax?
Regarding attacking an unconscious target and missing. You're making the (very big) assumption that attack rolls are simply a check to bypass a targets Armour.
I personally prefer to look at it as an all round check on whether something connects AND gets through. Just because a target isn't moving, doesn't mean the attacker will 100% hit their body.
Joe mentioned considering PCs an object when unconscious, waste paper baskets are objects, and I've missed plenty of times throwing paper at one, even from a couple of feet.
A fly could buzz past at just the right moment causing them to hit the ground next to the body etc.
Is Troy on Letterboxd?
So of the many comments made, I will call out (and summarize) when Troy says he likes to be stingy on knowledge checks, and hold back the juicy stuff if nobody rolls the crit (keep in mind Troy rolls not the players), then says the players can't remember what is said so the GM should err on the side of giving MORE information, then about five minutes later blames the players for "their" (really his) knowledge rolls for the party having a lack of synergy. Troy, just own up to the fact that your Game Mastering style is to destroy synergy in for the sake of story every time you think it will be entertaining. Don't try to blame the sidestep it. :P BTW Campaign Two is shaping up nicely :D
WIll fan crits and fumbles ever be made public? I love to give crits and fumbles that extra oomph, but the official crit and fumble decks paizo release are lacking compared to the 'Naish.
what is troys favourite hockey movie?
Slapshot?
-4 to Reflex saves while unconscious makes NO SENSE whatsoever BUT if you take away Reflex saves while unconscious get ready to be introducing a new character or 3 every session since technically they would be getting hit with a critical fail effect.
In response to 5/1/2024 Cannon Fodder (for visibility):
I think that Troy's quickly corrected stance of never wanting to play/run 1e again ever (39 minute timestamp of that video) and making Legacy of the Ancients the final 1e show is a huge letdown for the network at large for me.
I wonder how the other GCN members feel about that statement of intent (I'm sure there were many conversations that happened offscreen and on when transitioning to 2e for Strange Aeons and prepping for GCP2e)?
I know it's a lot of work to prep campaigns but is there any interest from other members or active contractors even to run and/or play the other APs of 1e? Joe said "you never know", but quickly agreed with Troy when he said no more.
That being said, I recently finished listening to the "last" episode of Raiders of the Lost Continent, and keep up with Legacy of the Ancients within the hour it is posted as I am at work overnight, and hate to see the reasons for my membership and original interest in the network being swept away. It's hard enough finding any 1e content as is anywhere that compares with the quality of GCN.
Am I the only one?
No, I've seen some comments here and there.
Would it be a stretch for the GCN to soul search internally and reveal in Cannon Fodder or Legacy what other 1e APs or even entire game systems the members and contractors would like to run/play, including character builds and tropes they want to eventually try? Like a list for each person, not necessarily ranked but that does not hurt.
Maybe even poll the Naish what new shows or continuations they would like to see?
I was looking forward to Troy breaking down Game 7
Funny how Troy can predict 4 moves ahead of time in a choreographed wrestling match. Yknow what i can predict? Troys monsters initiative, that they Crit someone in the first couple rounds, and that they dont miss a save until the party is on the ropes.
Yeah it's getting a bit suspect
Tbf a single enemy in pf2 is usually a few levels higher than the pcs. Which makes its stats higher than the party
Troy NEVER fudges rolls. He lives by the dice and dies by the dice.
@TheGlassCannon maybe he should CONSIDER IT so his jawns are more believable. (thanks for the reply. I love you guys)
You know whose rolls are suspicious? Noura in Call of Cthulhu, rolls better than Troy? Her character’s stats are all super high 🤔 it’s like she’s a vampire that’s sucking all the luck out of Ross
I watched A Woman Under The Influence last night on Troy's recommendation. I didn't like it. The acting is well done, for sure. But the story is just awful. Am I missing something?
