This was from a time before they sold out to solicitation of racial profiling and child abuse. I imagine there was probably actually something humorous about this back then. It's a bummer, really.
I remember stumbling on this promo video on MuchMusic as a teenager, and thinking it must've been some kind of joke. Like a very funny joke that spoke to my sense of humour. Very soon afterward I became a fan for life.
Exactly the same thing happened to me. City Limits on MuchMusic was amazing...so much cool, non-mainstream music: TMBG, Nina Hagen, Lene Lovich... A solid chunk of my record collection sprung out of that show.
3:24 interviewer "You come from America so do you have an American dream Johns response "Ugh, every night." Little did they realize this album is now a classic.
0:46 Some albums released today have only 10 songs or less in them We are upset about this So instead of cursing tthe darkness We decided to do something about this We put out a album this has 19 songs on it And thats why our album is better
I can't believe this doesn't have any comments yet! When I first saw this, I thought it was the most hilarious thing in the world. Hell, it's still the most hilarious thing ever.
This is probably the most beautiful and charming and humorous invitation for a record I´ve ever seen. I haven´t seen much though. Just one to be precise. Thank you.
Does this diner still exist? And more importantly, do you visit and reminisce of a much better time when albums had a promotional video? Flood is still winning.
We all need a dose of this right now. Laughing boosts ya immune system aswell. I always knew the John's would somehow save the planet. -Peace , much love y'all. Btw I used dial a song so much in the early 90s. Lots of pocket money used. Kept me sane.
Yes.....Minimum Wage......I love it! When I finally got around to hearing Frank Sinatra's cover of "Downtown" on an old record a few years after hearing and knowing all of FLOOD by heart, I had several happy moments during it(and many more after from it as well). Then, I heard part of the Petula Clark version of "Downtown" in the news on Christmas, 2020. Even though I had heard Clark's version at least 100 times, mostly on oldies stations before 1990, I cried. Now sometimes my mind turns, like The Rolling O, to Neil Young's own original "Downtown" from the mid 1990's.
I haven't seen this for 30 years, but it's imprinted on my brain. One question: Why was Istanbul (not Constantinople) silenced out? Could they not get the rights to use their own recording?
Independent, sex symbol, superstars. Every word true. The smiles on their faces as he says that are so cute.
You only played the title of most of the songs, but you played the entire lyrics of "Minimum Wage".
I consider "Heyah!" a lyric as well. But I'm strange.
What about “HEYAH!” ??
@@snakes7303 it plays
@@andrew-sn6gh oh it does omg
Stop watching CZcams everyone and get back to work.
This humor was ahead of its time

@@Adrian-fd4wf Uhh what the hell are you on about there buddy? You sure you got the right band?
@@Adrian-fd4wf you must be thinking of some other band.
@@Adrian-fd4wf what?
I: "Of course you come from America so do you have an American Dream?"
JL: "Every night"
The bit where they list off songs is great, especially Istanbul.
I dont get it, why is it silence?
ColdFire 41 yep!
@@QuillPGall please explain
It's a public song
@@locho41: It's a cover; they don't own the copyright to it.

@@LubaFan @ScottSimpson I came here to say this exact thing.
the whiplash literally has me dying
also
"DEAD!"
"Dead!"
“John Flasburgh- Flansburgh.”
“Wait-“
"Do you have an American dream?"
"Every night..."
They are too silly they MUST be contained!
This is absolutely precious.
How do they both have the coolest haircuts I’ve ever seen
This is exactly why they are the best band
i watch this once a day
Same 🤝
I did purchase Flood between 1992 and 2020, and I can confirm that all of those songs do appear on the album.
3:24 interviewer "You come from America so do you have an American dream
Johns response "Ugh, every night."
Little did they realize this album is now a classic.
Linnell: Some records that come out today only have 10 songs or less
Flansburgh: *THIS MAKES US ANGRY*
The sudden escalation killed me🤣
but instead of cursing the darkness, john & i have decided to do something about it.
THEY ARE SO CUTE OMG
Linnell with the long wavy hair and black turtleneck
I’ve watched this so many times and I finally just noticed the way Linnell looks at Flans and laughs at 0:41
This is legitimately the greatest video ever.
I love that the samples are less than a second long
And only the parts where they sing the titles.
I like how Istanbul was muted as if this wasn't the official channel uploading it
royalninja pretty sure that was part of the original promo
Actually it was because in Gigantic it wasnt let in
i think it was already muted because it’s a cover
this is literally the cutest thing i’ve ever seen

Nineteen was such a clumsily sexy time in my life.
This video made my day. And the Flood album made my last 3 decades.
Blast from the past! I absolutely love this record!
Flansburgh and Linnel are geniuses!
Ugh i love them so much 😭
This made me feel better about the world.
Agree. We all need this more than ever.
Their humour is brilliant! Top class humans right there🙌🏻
Linnell’s face at 0:42 is the mood
It took me 30 years to learn this promo exists.
It took me 14. You suck
33 years here. :(
The humor has aged so well, I couldn't stop chuckling. Love these two
Mr. Metronome, you're so cool.
This video made to sell albums never fails to bring me joy every second of it
This is undoubtedly the best album put out by TMBG.
5:33 That's how I act when i'm listening to their music in public. Trying desperately not to dance or sing
1:16 DEAD my favorite song on the album

I am always so impressed at the accordion parts
I want the title quote "minimum wage" as a ringtone.

+Shane Heule A promotional video _and_ 19 songs. 26 years ago. Those were the days.
0okamino Too many numbers...
I went to the diner a couple years ago and it was still there, and the tile was still there, but the rest of the decor was different.
valerie2776 Which diner is it?
dave idmarx De Robertis caffe (176 First Ave, New York, NY), but it looks like it got sold in 2014 :(

Brilliant Duo!
This album was so good!! Every track is a banger!
The sheer level of musicianship of these 2 guys is crazy and could easily go next to Squeeze, XTC, 10CC!!!!
Yes! Linnell and Flansburgh are the Partridge and Moulding of Brooklyn.
Quoting Eleanor Roosevelt, writing kickass songs, being funny! Is there anything these guys can't do??
I love how they wear contrasting white and black for the interview
The domino brothers
You guys crack me up. Also, MINIMUM WAGE!!!!!!!

Why is the world in love again?
Why are we marching hand-in-hand?
why are the ocean levels rising up?
it's a brand new record for 1990
Still the best video ever.
Damn, they were both cute as hell when they were young👀
Great promotion
"But instead of cursing the darkness" lol
I'm curious about what cafe/diner they're in.
So where would people see this promo before the internet proliferated? Would it just be on its own VHS tape and distrobuted in record stores or what?
I need to recreate this......
Luke Hennisch i don’t think you do
jude l what are you talking about?!
Do it
Rusty Ralston definitely
Don't do it. It's already been done perfectly right here. Come up with something new. It's what John & John would've wanted.
they are so silly :)
they could have done the whole video for birdhouse, just sitting there in a diner chatting over coffee. ignoring the camera.
30 years...
DEAD! (Dead!)
TMBG are NOT prejudiced. Seriously.
why do you mention it?
jeez, Flans, get some sleep, tall child!
yes thank you for using Sleep Inspector
