  • In 2024 Rainforest Rescue celebrates 25 years of protecting and restoring rainforests. As part of our 25th anniversary, we are sharing stories, memories and inspiration from people who mean a great deal to our work.
Mark Dunphy, founder of the Firewheel Nursery and Rainforest Rescue's Native Nursery Advisor, has been visiting the Daintree region for over 40 years. Ever since his first encounter with what he calls 'the Holy Grail of tropical rainforest', Mark has been smitten with the diversity of plant and animal life in the Daintree.
In his words, "It's almost a cliche because they are so visually iconic, the Daintree has plants like the native Queensland fan palms (Licuala ramsayi). I'm crazy about them! They're stunning. You walk through a Fan Palm gallery, and they are so wonderful to see that you want to share the experience with everyone."
In this video, take a relaxing walk through a Fan Palm Gallery with Rainforest Rescue. You'll see the stunning foliage that creates amazing shapes in the forest, as glimpses of sunlight catch the edges of the palm leaves. Listen as the rainforest birdsong and sounds of the trees mingle with the rustle of the palms. Enjoy a couple of minutes deep within the Daintree and become a 'fan', just like Mark is, of an iconic species from the oldest rainforest in the world.
All footage is captured in intact Daintree rainforest, in locations that are part of Rainforest Rescue's portfolio of land that is protected forever. Thanks to the generosity and commitment of our supporters, more and more of the Daintree's natural wonder is now protected and connected to the National Park. By connecting up fragments of rainforest we allow the endemic species of the Daintree to move freely and increase the genetic diversity of the forest ecology.
