    The only one that really surprised me was the shotgun. If the IRA was using something like Winchester 1897s that would make more sense to me but I can't think of any combat situation where I'd prefer a break action double barrel shotgun over a bolt action rifle. The pistols are a little strange to me because compared to a rifle a pistol is almost useless in combat but I know that was an atypical war so it wouldn't surprise me if I found out there were situations where they needed to use pistols.

      The shotgun surprised me at first but then thinking about it, these guys for the most part weren't trained soldiers, some were ex British army but not that many so for up close work shotguns are perfect . The mauser C96 is a great choice because with the stock attached the volunteers could make accurate shots and without the stock it's good for assassinations
