- Welcome to our channel where we document our journey living on a homestead in Alaska's harsh winter! In this video, we tackle the challenge of staying warm in freezing temperatures as we finish up our mudroom and install a handrail for easy access to our basement heat source.
Living in Alaska means dealing with extreme weather conditions, and with temperatures dropping as low as -29°F, ensuring our home stays cozy is a top priority. Our garage landing and mudroom serve as the main entry points to our house, so it's crucial to have them properly insulated and equipped for maximum heat retention.
Join us as we showcase the process of finishing the mudroom, decorative finishes, hooks for winter coats, mats to watch the mud and muck as well as spare for an extra freezer, fridge. Fully loaded including a boot dryer.
Additionally, we'll demonstrate the installation of a sturdy handrail that provides safe and convenient access to our basement, where our trusty Blaze King wood stove is located. This wood stove is our primary heat source, and having easy access to it is essential for keeping our home warm and comfortable.
As we navigate the challenges of winter on our Alaskan homestead, we hope to inspire and educate others on how to create a cozy living space in even the harshest climates. Totally impressed. I love the fact you are getting a fire resistant door. I've seen some videos from Alaska off grid places and how the people love no law s or inspection s but build downright dangerous houses or cabins. 😅

It’s a tempting thing to cut corners here because no one saying you can’t, a young couple I follow on Instagram just blew up and killed all their animals because they didn’t properly install the propane. They are lucky they were not home, but all the animals were no so lucky, we saw that after we ordered the door and Aaron goes this is exactly way we need to do things the right way not the easy way.

You are definitely a woman of many talents! I have watched you butcher a moose, cook a meal while standing on a frozen lake, wrangle a flock of chickens…… now building your open air closet! Plus the list goes on!
Do me a favor..tack some rubber stair treads on all the painted steps, especially the garage ones. We painted our wooden deck and two steps with a quality outdoor/porch paint. The first sleet storm our daughter took a horrible spill on the steps. The rubber treads took that issue away.

Great job! The Alaska room looks fantastic. It will be so great to have a place, out of sight, to hang the winter gear! When I lived further up north I literally had an alcove that was 4' x 6' where I secured hooks and boot trays, it just didn't ever seem to contain the mess. I'm so glad you had rails installed. I love the industrial look of the pipe. Oh, and is that some foreshadowing I see??! Big stacks of seed starting equipment 🪴🌻😉

This build is life changing for y'all! It looks great and really smart. I loooove it! I didn't see if you already thought of this but a doormat at the foot of the stairs will catch even more muck. I did see the one at the door but one of those brushy looking mats would get off the majority to save the steps. Thanks so much for sharing. It's really a brilliant use of space and looks nice too ❤

I don’t want to sound critical but aren’t you worried about possible accidents happening getting into the freezer and refrigerator? I would be worried about the possibility of falling off. Is there more room than what shows on camera? I love that y’all have the knowledge and talent to do these projects.
We will worried about it when we figure how we want it. It is however wider than on camera. You don’t feel like you are going to fall when you are on it.

How safe is it having black stairs? You can't see them in the dark. 😊

Why did you paint the wood ? I would of just put clear poly on it. and the black on the door is ugly.
As I explained to protect the steps they will get lots of wear and tear and my home has lots of black. You are clearly not going to like the style of my whole beautiful tasteful very well done home. That’s ok. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think it looks amazing and I live in it.
