    Just to add, Thri-Kreen are most well known for being a playeable race in the 2E /3E Dark Sun settings. :) So far, I don't think 5E added them as playeable but we can only hope it happens.

      @@TheGallantGoblin Not to mention that they tend to eat other people if they get hungry... :D There was a Dark Sun videogame back in the DOS era, and you could get a Thri-Kreen party member, probably where I first heard of the race. They are a challenge to play, then again, Dark Sun is all about the challenge, a world where water and food are often causes for murder, arcane magic users are despised and feared as most drain energy from the land and kill vegetation, and where even the gods abandoned the world thinking it is a lost cause so the few clerics have little respect. Did I also mention the cannibalistic Halfling tribes? :D

    My only real complaint about the set has to do with the Yuan-Ti Abomination. It's a large creature on a medium base, which I can live with, but it's sculpt has a lean to it and it gets knocked over rather easily.

    Nice to see you got a case! I assume this was re-issued then?
    I never knew before 5E giants were Huge in 2E - they are measured in feet in the old monster manuals and when I read them I had little idea how much 1 foot was, being used to meters. :) But I really prefer them this way now.
    This set sacrificed a lot of "space" for separate minis with duplicates but I guess that was needed to make it an all-Huge set. (This certainly became a praactice for Wizkids after this set) Well, almost all-Huge. There are some weird size changes in it, like making the Fomorian Large and putting the Yuan-Ti Abomination on a Medium base, but I forgive it since all these minis are just so excellent and greatly detailed. I also liked how many giants are female, we needed more of those, the old WotC sets did not do many female giants.
    The Yuan-Ti are great, and love the variety, especially the snake-hands Half-Blood. He must be hard to befriend, imagine shaking hands! :) The Abomination is probably the most detailed and best looking snake-man mini I have ever seen. Btw, a female Abomination appears in Rise of Tiamat too, I think.
    The only other weirdness in the set are the giant hunters. They are apparently based on never released art for the adventure, but they kinda came out of nowhere. I like them, they look interesting, especially with the specified giant hunting weapons, but to this day, they are the least desired Rares, you can often get them for 3-4$.
    Sansuri, Hekaton, Harshnag and Ymrith are absolutely amazing, and they still fetch huge prices as singles today. I do wish the helmet's lower half and hair was different painted on Harshnag though, might repaint that myself somedy. Same for Hekaton's beard melding into the fur of his coat!
    The female Frost Giants are some of the best in the set, though I do wonder how easily they can come by so many white dragon skulls for their armor, LOL.
    The Hellhounds and Bandits are excellent too, and I like the "quivering palm" attack on the Githzerai Monk. Oh and some of the best Kenkus so far! Funny how in 2E they used to look like hawks... now both Pathfinder's Tengu and D&D Kenku are crow-like, like the mythical ones.
    Oh and love the translucent beard on the Azer. We had 2 before, but comparing them, the new one stands out with this effect.
    Was surprised we could actually get Sprites, they were never done before. They are tiny yet detailed. And odd choice to have Yochlols, quite high level Demons, as Commons, but not complaining, the previous Yochlol mini took me like a decade to find cheap.

    • @TheGallantGoblin
      @TheGallantGoblin  Před 4 lety +1

      Well, this one we didn't get a full case for. Since this was the adventure I was running with my home group, I had been collecting minis from it one-by-one for years. So it was more cost effective to just grab the ones we didn't have on the aftermarket.
      Interesting, interesting. Yeah, and I'm glad Monster Menagerie also included some female giants too. It's certainly good to have the variety. It wasn't until I filmed the conclusion of this video that I put all the Yuan-Ti sculpts next to each other and suddenly had a strong urge to add them to my next game. It was a bit of an odd inclusion in the set, but I'm glad they went all out and gave us the entire clan in one go.
      Yeah, the giant hunters were confusing to a lot of us who didn't track down their origin. It was a strange way to include PC minis. I wonder if there was a plan for those characters at some point that fell by the wayside. A book or video game appearance maybe. Or even a subplot in the adventure that got cut.
      Oh, surprised to hear that these are our first official sprite minis. Seems like a common enough creature that would have shown up at some point.
      I really wish I was a fly on the wall in the meeting where they decided which minis to include in this set. There really are some inexplicable choices. I need to see if we can get an interview with some of the Wizkids folks to get some of these pressing questions answered! :-) Thanks, Commander! -Theo

    • @commanderbbshockwave8698
      @commanderbbshockwave8698 Před 4 lety

      @@TheGallantGoblin Oh, so you got them one by one! Must have took some time! especially the Rare giants are expensive on the secondary market and hard to find cheap.
      Yuan-Ti are some of my favourites too. :) Who wouldn't want "sneapole" (snake people) in their games? They also benefit from having a lot of older sculpts, as 4E used them a lot, even the old D&D miniature game's second edition starter set had a Malison.
      Did you find artwork for the giant hunters somewhere? I never did... But most often Icons and PFB minis are based on existing artwork as Wizkids works easier using that, so I assume some must exist somewhere.
      There was a "Thorn" mini in Angelfire, who I suppose could work as a wingless Sprite, but yes, this is the first time. I think the old WotC minis must have been manufactured from injection molds, not printed, and likely that technique has a size limit - explaining why also past Stirges or Imps were pretty big compared to the current ones.

    • @TheGallantGoblin
      @TheGallantGoblin  Před 4 lety +1

      Well I think the rares we did have were from random booster boxes Theo had picked up one by one for the campaign way before we started collecting. We did have to buy Iymrith and Sansuri as singles but had pulled Harshnag and two Hekatons haha. I had these giant spreadsheets tracking prices on three or four different retailers trying to figure out if it was cheaper to buy singles or a new case. In most cases it ended up being only about $50 or less cheaper to buy singles but money is money and we didn’t need more of the non rares.
      There’s one piece of art in SKT that happens to show Kleef and Crag, and we show sections of that in the video when those figures come up, but that’s all we’ve seen. We know for sure that WizKids gets shown art that is not publicly available. -Grady

    • @TheGallantGoblin
      @TheGallantGoblin  Před 4 lety +1

      Do you mean the named NPCs or creatures? The named NPCs are based on concept art that never made it into the adventure. It is possible the characters were present early in development and removed. It's also pretty normal for these sets to have player character figures, just instead of naming them "Human Female Ranger" they gave the sculpt a name instead, so from that perspective the figures aren't that out of the ordinary. As for the creatures that don't appear in the adventure, this seems to happen in just about every Icons of the Realms set. It's partly a way to get in creatures that couldn't fit in other sets and to encourage people to buy sets they wouldn't otherwise want--you can see that with Eberron especially where they put Monster Manual creatures in for those who otherwise wouldn't be interested in an Eberron-exclusive set. -Grady
