Tips for cold weather catfish on the Missouri River

- Are you struggling to catch catfish during cold weather months on larger swifter rivers? In this video I will be on the Missouri river sharing some tips on how I target and catch these big blue catfish. Cold weather doesnt have to keep you in the house waiting for spring to catch some nice catfish. I find it to be a great time to catch bigger catfish. Check out the 71 pound blue I reel in using these tips!

Thanks for the tips. Not many channels offer them, much less on the Missouri River. The Missouri River is very challenging to fish. I think there are a lot of subjects to cover in videos including safety (especially when fishing alone), effective anchoring, where to find blues, fishing methods. Details on where to look for blue catfish seasonally is really a topic of interest. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Really nice catfish! Congratulations.

you have any river spot location recommendations for people stuck bank fishing?
If you’re local to me, downtown St. Louis on the Mississippi has some good fishing. Try to find any public access along the Missouri River or Mississippi River in the St. Louis county area. There are lots of them. Should be able to google them.

Penn squalls but am slowly switching over to Abu 7000 C3’s. The Abu’s seem to hold up a little better.

Do you ever use any other bait besides shad during the cold months?
Yes, Iv had success on cut carp and mooneye. Shad just seems to give the best results.
During the cold months, do you ever get any action from channel or flathead, or is it strictly the blues that you catch?
Blue cat are the most active in cold months, however I have caught a few flat head and channel.

Any tips for catching winter blues from the river bank?
There are many things you can look for. Start with downloading apps that have topo maps of the waters you plan to fish. These maps will show deep holes, current breaks access points and even cover. If fishing current look for things that might break that current. Even dips in the bank can cause current breaks. Be mobil until you find feeding fish.

@@stateamind29best Mobil maps I have found is navionics very detailed and doesn’t cost much for what you get
That string on the gripper is to put your hand through so if the fish twist and pulls the grippers out of your hand the fish don't swim off with grippers on its lip. I've seen it happen several times on videos people to dumb to know not know what the string is for.
