    The 9th generation of consoles came with the need for fast and rapid storage. Both the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 require super fast storage, with the former needing a proprietary Expansion Card to extend the SSD storage to both boot and store the games. Both consoles allow for external portable HDDs and SSDs to be plugged in via the USB ports, but this form of storage only allows for 8th gen on PS5 (which is just PlayStation 4 games), and for Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One games to be played direct from the drive.
    You’ll see that if you try to boot an Xbox Series X|S game that isn’t on your internal storage you’ll get the message that the game cannot be played from external storage, and that it will need to be transferred to internal storage. And this was, until recently, illustrated by the two arrows symbol, any games that had this symbol means that they need to be transferred to the internal storage to be played. But there used to me be games that didn’t have this symbol and that was an easier way to tell if a game could be booted from external storage or not. There are games like Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Sea of Thieves and We Happy Few, Star Wars Squadrons and Maid of Sker that despite being Xbox Series X|S games can be booted from the External Storage.
    - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
    But why do games need to be on the internal drive at all?
    When Microsoft announced the Series X|S buzzwords like Xbox Velocity Architecture and Smart Delivery were brought in, with the latter being the tech behind knowing which version of the game should be downloaded from the store. So if you are on the base Xbox One, One S, One X, Series S or Series X, you would get the best available game for that system. Unfortunately for Series S owners they are quite hamstrung by the small capacity on 364GB (advertised as 500GB) yet, having to download large file sizes.
    - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
    So how do I get Series X|S games to play off an External Drive?
    Well, this won’t apply for all games but there are few games out there that are Xbox Series X|S certified such as Decenders, which has the X|S logo, but can be stored on External Storage.
    You can press the VIEW Button, the button that has two over lapping squares just above the D-pad, then you can bring up a menu and then go to “file information”. From here you can see two important pieces of information, the first;
    Is the “Gen” - it says Durango, (which was the pre-release code name for the Xbox One)
    The second is “Console Type” - which says Xbox One Gen 9 Aware. Meaning that this the Xbox One version of the game but with certain features on the Xbox Series X|S
    - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
    But why care?
    Well games are starting to take up a huge amount of space, such as the Halo Master Chief collection and if you didn’t have to store this on your internal drive then it makes it a bit more palatable to have it as part of your collection when it can be stored externally, and yet still reap the benefits of the Xbox Series X|S.

    Xbox did a poor job here. There are some games that don’t change wether it’s on x/s or just Xbox one. So having the option of being able install the next gen or old gen would be a lot better. The reason I bought the Series S was because I didn’t think I needed the X storage space because I have a 4tb hard drive, turns out I can only download a couple games on it. Now I need go out and buy the new SSD or whatever it is, just to install a pissing game.

    • @NeilFlynnGaming
      @NeilFlynnGaming  Před rokem +9

      Agree, having a feature that would essentially disable "Smart Delivery" would be good.
      PlayStation 5 allows you to download the PS4 or PS5 version of the game. Which can sometimes be a difference maker.
      I would say that the 4TB HDD is still useful though, it just means that you will need to transfer games back and forth. It can take up time but it is still faster than re-downloading.
      The tip in the video is to see which games in your Xbox Series library are "Durango" games and then put them on your HDD. At least you know you won't need to transfer them back to your internal drive.

And I’m basically full. But I’ve been downloading a lot of games that don’t have the x/s logo and I can play them off my hard drive. So that’s fun, and what I do if I wanna download a new x/s optimized game, is a I take the one with smallest amount of GBS, from my internal and transfer to my external to make room and then download and play that way. And then transfer again and repeat the process. It’s very annoying, it is faster than downloading the games again for sure. But it still takes about 5-10 mins depending on the game and this day an age you could get on a game for that amount of time, get annoyed and get right the fuck off, so it’s a waste of time sometimes. Also very annoying how COD alone is like 200 gbs.

    My question is what is the max amount of drives and the max amount of storage that can be supported on the Xbox Series XIS, when I mean drives I'm talking about the console's internal drive on it's own, those Seagate SSD expansion cards, and just regular external HDD and SDD drives

    • @NeilFlynnGaming
      @NeilFlynnGaming  Před 2 lety +2

      So, with the internal memory on the Series S (512GB but only 364GB usable) and the biggest 2TB Expansion Card (1.86TB usable) which gives you a total of 2.17TB (2226 divided by 1024)
      The Xbox Series X has 1TB (802GB usable) - which would give it 2.59TB max.
      Now here is where it gets tricky, because you could plug 3 drives into your Xbox Series X|S' available 3 USBs. Depending on how much you want to spend you could get some huge HDDs and plug them in there. You could plug in some hefty drives and get a lot of storage, but remember you'll still only be able to play the Codename Scarlett Xbox Series X|S from the Internal Storage/Expansion Card.

Can I simply go and buy and install a game such as forza 4 from xbox 360 days on here? Or are you forced to play only via game pass?

    • @NeilFlynnGaming
      @NeilFlynnGaming  Před rokem +1

      Hey Dylan. Thanks for the question. The best way to describe this - Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One* games can ALL be played from external storage. Xbox One is the slight exception, for example some Xbox One games have been updated to Series X|S games for free, but now require to be on Internal storage to play. My complaint here is that you can't choose which version you get. If you are playing on Xbox Series X you get that version, there is no option to pick the Xbox One version. (e.g on PS5 you can pick either the PS4 or PS5 version to install). SOME and I will stress SOME, Xbox Series X|S games can be played from external HDD storage, as described in the video. Not a lot of them, but some of them. This isn't the best solution, but it is the only legitimate one. The reason why this is useful is that if you are playing any of the games from the Xbox Series X|S generation then you could potentially put some of them on your HDD and free up the internal drive.
      As for your question on games ownership vs Gamepass. If, you wanted to purchase a game from the Microsoft Store to own forever then you can do that. You don't need to subscribe to Gamepass. Some games have since been de-listed, and unfortunately the Forza games have been hit hard by this. To my knowledge Forza Motorsport 4 is not compatible.
      SOME physical games are, if you owned physical versions of back-compatible games then they will work in your Xbox Series X disc drive. (e.g an original Xbox 360 disc will work in the Series X, it will download the game from the store for free). BUT NOT ALL, check on the Microsoft Store website to confirm.
      This may sound confusing, especially if you are new to Xbox. However it is more friendly then what the competition are offering.
      I hope that helps and let me know if you need me to clear anything up.

    • @NeilFlynnGaming
      @NeilFlynnGaming  Před 2 lety

      Smart Delivery is just a term that Microsoft use to let people know that the correct version of the game is being played on their console of choice.
      That means if there is a cross generation title of a game Microsoft may have up to FIVE versions of the same game, (Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X) but your Xbox will automatically do this for you.
      (Some people don't like this idea though, because sometimes file sizes are much larger, e.g If you have a Series S but are happy playing the Xbox One version)
      I like Smart Delivery, it is a clever system but it would be good to have the option to download any of the other versions if you prefer to do so.

    • @NeilFlynnGaming
      @NeilFlynnGaming  Před rokem

      You don't have to network transfer it. If you have upgraded your Xbox One S to an Xbox Series S then all you need to do is take that External drive from your old One S to your Series S and plug it straight in. (Some games will need updating to Series S versions.).
      Have in mind, that if you want to go back and forth between your Series S and One S (for whatever reason) then you may need to update the games again (or in this case downgrade them) so they can play on One S. (The Xbox does this automatically for you).
      IMPORTANTLY - Forza Horizon 5 is a Series X|S game and HAS to be installed on the internal storage to play the game. If you play on Series S then make sure you have enough space to have it installed. You can store it on your External HDD but you will need to transfer it to the internal storage to play it. It is 117.9GB on Series S.
      Hope that helps!

    I thought this was just a way to force us to buy the memory expansion cards which the system is programmed to accept as internal storage. I just don't get why the higher priced official XBOX expansion card (has 1TB M.2 SSD chip inside) costs more than a normal 1TB M.2 SSD or I would have already bought the darn thing.

    • @NeilFlynnGaming
      @NeilFlynnGaming  Před rokem

      The funny thing is that the Expansion card is not an M.2 SSD, but actually a modified CF Express card instead, so it is much slower than what a M.2 NVME SSD could achieve. Funnily enough they could achieve a fairly decent speed over USB 3.2 and an external SSD.
      I am no expert as to why Microsoft programmed it this way, may it is a way to sell Expansion cards, or maybe there is another reason.

      It is the same with the PS5 too, that needs an M.2 NVMe drive to boot games. At least "some" Xbox Series XS games can boot off an external drive, although not many. If buying an Xbox Expansion Card is a bit too costly at the moment then finding a fast SSD external drive could be the other alternative and then shuttle games back and forth. • @NeilFlynnGaming
      @NeilFlynnGaming  Před 2 lety +6

      If money is not an issue then the best solution is purchase the Expansion Card (@0:44). This will allow you to play games directly from the storage but it is expensive. There are certain Xbox Series X/S Games that you can store and play on external storage (but only a few, as described in this video).
      If you were to buy an External HDD or SSD it doesn't matter, as they both have the same restrictions. An SSD would help transfer games back and forth much quicker, but these are also quite expensive in high capacities. So it really depends on how many Xbox Series X/S games you are looking to purchase. I have 35 Xbox Series S games on my 1TB external SSD, but most of these need to be transferred back to the internal storage to be played, however, the transfer speeds are much faster. I keep all of my Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One games on the 4TB HDD I own, I have 250+ games on here. You don't need to transfer original Xbox, Xbox 360 or Xbox One games to the internal drive to be played so that is why I keep them on the HDD.
      Hope that helps!

      The Expansion Card acts as an extension to the Internal memory, so if you get one of these then you won't need to keep transferring games back and forth. However, they are quite expensive in comparison to USB External SSDs and HDDs. Maybe you might find a good Black Friday deal!

      Xbox Series X/S games NEED to be on the Internal Drive to be played, with the exceptions that I mention in this video, the ones that are code named "Durango" can be played off of External Storage. There are only a few games that are Durango, but if you have any Durango games then put them on the External storage as they will work.

If you have (for example) warzone on your external and want to play it internal, it actually makes it faster to download the game as you're just moving it. Try planning what games you'll play before moving. No, unless they were still codenamed Durango. That means that over time some Xbox One games will receive updates which will force you to have the Xbox Series X|S version, and thus force you to have it on internal storage to play. This is due to the Smart Delivery system, which always gives you the best version for the console you are playing on, but unfortunately doesn't give you the choice to install any version you want.

      Transferring from the Internal Storage to an External HDD can be quite slow, and it my experience Transferring back to the internal drive is much faster (mainly due to the read/write speed of the internal storage). HDD speeds can vary hugely depending on what HDD you have and how old it is. You could pick up a portable external SSD on a black friday sale perhaps which will speed up the transfer speeds but you still won't be able to play Series X/S games directly off an External SSD. If I had game downloaded in my external drive and if I had no space on my internal drive then how would I play it

    • @NeilFlynnGaming
      @NeilFlynnGaming  Před 2 lety

      You would need to transfer games off your internal drive that you are not playing, and transfer them to the external drive. Then transfer the game you want to play from your external drive to your internal drive. Check to see if any of the games you have on your internal drive are "Durango" games. If they are, then transfer these ones to the external drive as they will still play from the external drive.

      @NeilFlynnGaming  Před 2 lety +1

      If you get an external HDD or SSD then the only games that you will be able to play are; Original Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One and some certain Xbox Series X and S games (Durango).
      To play Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S (Scarlett) games you will need to have them on the internal drive or on an Xbox Expansion Card

    Xbox really chaps my a**. "Internal" storage or storage in general were never an issue, and in the grand scheme of things, its just a portable "gaming PC". This bottleneck shouldn't have ever become a thing.

    • @NeilFlynnGaming
      @NeilFlynnGaming  Před rokem

      Unfortunately some games require super fast storage to load assets into games among other things. Hard drives just can't get those speeds, and even external SSDs can't get to the speeds either. Some "Durango" games however seemingly don't require super fast storage (for one reason or another) so they can be played. Keep the "scarlets" on your Internal storage and "durangos" on your external storage device.

    • @NeilFlynnGaming
      @NeilFlynnGaming  Před 2 lety +1

      Unfortunately that won't work either, as far as I am aware Microsoft locked functionality to their proprietary Expansion card format, which from what I can tell is a customised 2230 NVMe SSD, so even if you plug one into the USB drive that won't work.
