Hi, Great review of your 110 - I have watched it in action on a number of videos and it is a very capable vehicle. I drove the 110 Perentie for many yrs in my time in the Aust Army and always enjoyed them. In the near future I am now looking to buy and kit out a 4x4 Touring vehicle for my travels around Australia in retirement. Not interested in late model trucks such as LC 200 etc with all the electronics and complex diesel engine components and such and fair to say I am still in decision mode. Considering an earlier model LC, older model 70 series or 110 Landie. They all have their issues when touring off road - the LC particularly with alternator and mud. The only thing I ever broke in the 110 was axles (off road work was extreme) we drowned a couple of engines as the first lot never had snorkles (god knows why) - you look to have addressed the weak axle problem but also the Perentie was notorious for seal leaks, apart from that it was an almost unbreakable piece of kit albeit it had some extra mods for the military. In favour of them as a vehicle we didnt give them much respect off road and would never consider pushing a veh so hard in my future travels. My question is - in your experience with your 110 and others 110 owners you would know, how reliable and durable are they - I plan on driving it all over Australia over a number of yrs with a fair number of K's being run up and do not want a veh that will end up a money pit and need time in the workshop ever time it works hard? Also, do any 110 models have Isuzu 3 ltr engine as used in the Aus military version? Its hard to get a feel for reliability as on the web you only ever hear of the bad stuff - fair to say I have seen many issues with other makes which can be attributed to the driver lack of respect for the veh in the vehicles defence.
Hi Mike, in my experience the defender is as reliable as most other vehicles if properly maintained, the Perenti with the 4DB1 engine is super reliable and a great combination, upgrade axels, cv's, driveshaft's (if you run bigger tyres) service frequently and you have a top tourer

I have considered buying one and rebuilding it up for a tourer - there an old school vehicle and I still remember having to bleed the injector line whenyou ran out of fuel :-) but that is the simplicity I am looking for. very nice rig! some great idea's quick question do you know anywhere you can get the maxi-drive diff locks? i heard they don't make them, anymore is that true? also do they replace the actual diff centre? and do you have an opinon on what's the best available rear diff replacement/ lockers actually a couple of question there haha
hello, correct MaxiDrive lockers are no longer manufacture, you find them sometimes on the second-hand market but they are quite expensive now as regarded as the best diff locks for Landrovers.
I've been following your vids for a while, just saw this one. I see you've sold it now but what a rig! I went to put those Recaro seats in my 110 Puma and nearly fell over when I got the quote! Do you still have the fyrlyts? I recently put a set on and I'm amazed you don't see them on the front of every 4x4. They just light everything up so well!
Yes Recaro are not cheap but my back is worth it, no have the Nitro Max light bars now while Fyrlyte are great I found I don’t need to see 2km ahead and did not like the 24v step up converters.
Your setup seems to be thouroughly worked through. Personally I fail to grasp why build on the Defender platform when there's Land Cruisers and Patrols out there, but that's just me. How are your batteries set up ? Did you have 3 of them and is really 100 watt solar enough ?
yes 3 batteries two under passenger seat one in the back, yes 100w was sufficient for me. The Defender is excellent touring platform and I absolutely loved this truck, it got me everywhere with fewer issues than quite a few other known brands in our group. However, it's since sold it and I bought a LC 105 as I needed more space behind the driver's seat for my kid's

@@AlloffroadAu Remarkable. I winced when I saw your reply. I’m an experienced Overlander having done very long trips in Africa, S America and Australia and elsewhere, always in Toyota. I recently started cleaning up my CZcams feed to re-focus back on over-landing as it’s six years since my last trip and I need some inspiration. When I saw your video thumbnail and title my instinctive judgement said “well you just wasted a whole load of money and should’ve bought a Land Cruiser in the first place.” I don’t feel particularly good saying that because deep down I always wanted Land Rover to succeed but experience has taught us to never ever trust them. Too many nightmare experiences being begged to rescue people with broken Landys in remote areas, either very harsh conditions or just flat out dangerous (e.g. S Sudan, shocker of a story). Our Toyotas have only ever been designed to carry two adults or in the case of the last vehicle, Mum, Dad up front and two kids in custom child seats. No room to spare, so we simply cannot carry another adult (or two). It’s very hard having to say “no, sorry, no room”. So then they ask you to tow them and that is an absolute nonstarter. Land Rover is sadly a great big horror show of a failure, the new ones are even worse. Apologies for the rant.
Pretty much everything Landrover, tons of electrical issues, new gearbox, two new fuel pumps, ignition barrel relay, blown fuel lines and the list goes on....

Please advise what those additional rear diff housing springs are as I am trying to reduce body roll on my 110 and cannot fit sway bars due to L/range fuel tank.
I’ve just had a mate shell out a quarter of a million dollars for a new 2024 Defender and I feel sure the reliability will be no better than the old ones. Resale certainly won’t be great as the resale value seems to fall off a cliff fast like most cars in that price bracket. I love the 110, it’s looks and the notion of it, however every land rover I’ve been in since 1970’s was very agricultural, basic and uncomfortable. I so wanted to love these cars. But dads had landcruiser since the mid 1970’s 55 series iron pig, so I bought a Landcruiser 100 series Sahara that is very reliable and so comfortable and they’ll bury me in that vehicle. However I still really want to love the land rover, but they just don’t let me. They could have ruled the world, but like all things British motoring failed to deliver in many areas but most of all reliability. Shame really.

Yes, it's on CarSales though I'm undecided, while it is the perfect touring truck for me unfortunately there is only 8cm space behind my seat and my kids getting to old to squeeze in there.
I bet you will regret selling it if you do. Never can get back the years of work put into it financially. And would take ages to produce a truck like this again. And considering the defender has by far the most efficient use of space of any 4by4, not sure you would be able to put the amount of stuff you have on any other vehicle and still have room for kids leg room. All the best in your decision
you are very right with any other vehicle I would sacrifice packing space for leg room for the kid's, I did some rough estimate and I spent around 130k on that truck (with some trial and errors) I will never recoup this at all...
how I wish we have this kind of camping here in the Philippines.. national park where you can camp.. its better to exposed the kids on this like kind of stuff rather than let them plasy gadgets all day long..

would disagree, Defender with Recaro is very comfortable, better seating position then Discovery 2, also Discovery is way to small for touring with a family
AllOffroad 4x4 Adventures TV each to their own I guess. I have a 2003-2004 SE discovery with full electrics, leather etc and we have a family of 6. tows our caravan nice and fits everyone in and a couple dogs!
correct I sleep in a stretcher tent if by myself or have a camper trailer when going with the family. Anyway I'm 193cm tall so there is no way I would sleep in a Defender
everyone has different requirements and if you tour many month a year in Australia it's not really over the top it just tremendously increases your margin for safety and capabilities
A great cat and been having it for the past 10 years. Land Rover has been becoming weird as nowadays the parts are ridiculously expensive and the car difficult to maintain. Hey get real pls do you really think that this is an affordable overlander??
Never said it’s affordable to everyone but I since moved on to a Landcruiser 105 with 1HDFTE conversion certainly far more reliable and less maintenance
Turbo timers are illegal, and your nemisis light are in an illegal position "obstructing view". I hope you got a blue plate for your new turbo and 3" lift. Also a lot of cars/4WD have tyres and headlights not to ADR. All these mods mean you could have problems getting a blue slip or insurance or work cover requirements. So if I would watch out around police. Sorry, I'm not saying I agree with it, just saying...
the vehicle was fully engineered in NSW including the Turbo etc. which is a grey area but in reality, I have never heard of anyone being defected for it.
Plus I’m by no means saying I’m an expert but “*Engine 99KW Torque” looks like a typo to me. For example my crappy van has a 100kW 300Nm engine from the factory. I’m not going to sit here and lie to you to be “nice”. It’s not nice, it’s quite cowardly and fake. All of you know who you are.
Can't beat a classic but there are alot of mods which are illegal. The lights for one, I think they are a great addition but you can't fit LEDs if they weren't original equipment. Like some other comments there are a number of illegally modified 4WDs driving on the road.
Hello Sergio, I beg to differ as much as I like Portals I probably would not want them on a Touring Vehicle; the service intervals would not suit long range touring, it introduces a host of new things to fail and certainly not getting parts for in the Australian Outback. I can't remember many incidences where I required them touring either. I have a Defender with Maxi Drive Portals czcams.com/video/lvZbleEgx2I/video.html but they are for play. I unfortunately, heard a bit of negative feedback for the Tibus Portals, someone In our Landrover community had them installed here in Australia, they did not work well in our conditions and constantly broke so that he removed them again after a year. Interesting, I have a friend who competes in the 4X4 "trial" and nothing bad says of portal axels,, also has some other car(mercedes benz G) that uses to travel, it is sponsored by Tibus (thanks to him I know this German mark), but, I went more to the central control of temperatures, the wheels, central air filling in the wheels, the suspension, portal axels give much maintenance, for those who want to travel over in isolated regions, I had a Experience with a Unimog (Unicat) in Africa, the temperature control is really excellent, it avoids many faults, and the power plant of the wheels can avoid trouble in the middle of a river !! I am thinking of importing a Land Rover Defender 6X6 from Australia (ex.army) and make a small expedition vehicle, mechanics all Mercedes and resort to Tibus and nowadays it is increasingly difficult to enter national parks with trucks ( Even with unimog), who knows if we meet in the middle of Australia one of these days?
Hi, as I said portal axles are great for competitions or rock crawling, not sure about Tibus ones given what I heard but maybe they fixed their issues. I had another guy from Japan contacting me on FB who also had his Tibus portals broken several times. It would be an expensive try. The Perenties are great vehicles with the 4DB1 engine they are nearly unbreakable I'm also considering a build :-).
Everything has its limit, even the best steel breaks, many people break differential, others never left any, because they are careful, they say that the Dynatrac differentials are very good and even they are, but, whoever breaks them, these portal axels do not fail The rule, I mentioned this Tibus, more for the wheels, central tire inflation system and temperature monitor! I think (in my humble opinion) that is what is missing in your Defender! As for portal axels, I know it has a defensive, even with the directional rear axle, I've seen the videos all (some even repeated), I swear I'm even thinking about importing a Defender 6X6 from Australia! And they are not very expensive (I get notification for every auction they make) to make a small expedition vehicle, I have a friend in Holland who has already imported one, is currently working on it, and I wait to see how it is, realized the idea ? Ps. I've already seen ALL your videos , and some several times!
yes, I agree everything can break, but the Tibus portals broke on every driver he did when every other car had no breakage, but this was a while ago maybe they have improved them now. The Maxi Drive Portals in my Defender are in there for ten years and had one broken half shaft in all that time (which is designed to be the weakest point). While I like tyre inflation system and heat monitoring, it again adds more things to fail, given that once offroad I don't need to vary my pressure too often and the temperature is also no issue. In Australia, the requirements may be a bit different then in Europe, if you drive for hundreds of kilometres on highly corrugated roads not sure how well the pressure monitoring would survive this. If Tibus like me to test some of their gear in the harshest conditions happy to try it and give my honest feedback.
+David McCafferty need space behind driver seat for kids and with my size and recaro seat I have around 8cm. Was ok while kids were little but not anymore

Yeah, I've just never seen four in the back before. It's an ingenious solution. Does it limit the flexibility of the rear axle at all?

When I saw your video thumbnail and title my instinctive judgement said “well you just wasted a whole load of money and should’ve bought a Land Cruiser in the first place.” I don’t feel particularly good saying that because deep down I always wanted Land Rover to succeed but experience has taught us to never ever trust them. Too many nightmare experiences being begged to rescue people with broken Landys in remote areas, either very harsh conditions or just flat out dangerous (e.g. S Sudan, shocker of a story). Our Toyotas have only ever been designed to carry two adults or in the case of the last vehicle, Mum, Dad up front and two kids in custom child seats. No room to spare, so we simply cannot carry another adult (or two). It’s very hard having to say “no, sorry, no room”. So then they ask you to tow them and that is an absolute nonstarter. Land Rover is sadly a great big horror show of a failure, the new ones are even worse. Apologies for the rant.
Pretty much everything Landrover, tons of electrical issues, new gearbox, two new fuel pumps, ignition barrel relay, blown fuel lines and the list goes on....

Did you try to weight it? Is it far over 3000 kg, when loaded?
It was around 3.4t and had a GVM upgrade to 3.8t

yes I have 2.6t 80% loaded, I also have a GVM increase to 3.5t

that'ts what was available in HD GBR Utha C/P and the small difference does not make any difference driving

I’ve just had a mate shell out a quarter of a million dollars for a new 2024 Defender and I feel sure the reliability will be no better than the old ones. Resale certainly won’t be great as the resale value seems to fall off a cliff fast like most cars in that price bracket. I love the 110, it’s looks and the notion of it, however every land rover I’ve been in since 1970’s was very agricultural, basic and uncomfortable. I so wanted to love these cars. But dads had landcruiser since the mid 1970’s 55 series iron pig, so I bought a Landcruiser 100 series Sahara that is very reliable and so comfortable and they’ll bury me in that vehicle. However I still really want to love the land rover, but they just don’t let me. They could have ruled the world, but like all things British motoring failed to deliver in many areas but most of all reliability. Shame really.

Yes, it's on CarSales though I'm undecided, while it is the perfect touring truck for me unfortunately there is only 8cm space behind my seat and my kids getting to old to squeeze in there.
I bet you will regret selling it if you do. Never can get back the years of work put into it financially. And would take ages to produce a truck like this again. And considering the defender has by far the most efficient use of space of any 4by4, not sure you would be able to put the amount of stuff you have on any other vehicle and still have room for kids leg room. All the best in your decision
you are very right with any other vehicle I would sacrifice packing
space for leg room for the kid's, I did some rough estimate and I spent
around 130k on that truck (with some trial and errors) I will never
recoup this at all...

would disagree, Defender with Recaro is very comfortable, better seating position then Discovery 2, also Discovery is way to small for touring with a family
AllOffroad 4x4 Adventures TV each to their own I guess. I have a 2003-2004 SE discovery with full electrics, leather etc and we have a family of 6. tows our caravan nice and fits everyone in and a couple dogs!

everyone has different requirements and if you tour many month a year in Australia it's not really over the top it just tremendously increases your margin for safety and capabilities

Never said it’s affordable to everyone but I since moved on to a Landcruiser 105 with 1HDFTE conversion certainly far more reliable and less maintenance

Turbo timers are illegal, and your nemisis light are in an illegal position "obstructing view".
I hope you got a blue plate for your new turbo and 3" lift.
Also a lot of cars/4WD have tyres and headlights not to ADR.
All these mods mean you could have problems getting a blue slip or insurance or work cover requirements. So if I would watch out around police.

the vehicle was fully engineered in NSW including the Turbo etc. which is a grey area but in reality, I have never heard of anyone being defected for it.
Plus I’m by no means saying I’m an expert but “*Engine 99KW Torque” looks like a typo to me. For example my crappy van has a 100kW 300Nm engine from the factory.

lol yes that is a typo it should say 99kw power, not torque. from memory, torque was around 400nm
Can't beat a classic but there are alot of mods which are illegal. The lights for one, I think they are a great addition but you can't fit LEDs if they weren't original equipment. Like some other comments there are a number of illegally modified 4WDs driving on the road.
You are wrong informed mate everything is legal and engineered, you sure can use full led headlight replacements as long as they are ADR approved.

Hello Sergio, I beg to differ as much as I like Portals I probably would not want them on a Touring Vehicle; the service intervals would not suit long range touring, it introduces a host of new things to fail and certainly not getting parts for in the Australian Outback. I can't remember many incidences where I required them touring either. I have a Defender with Maxi Drive Portals czcams.com/video/lvZbleEgx2I/video.html but they are for play. I unfortunately, heard a bit of negative feedback for the Tibus Portals, someone In our Landrover community had them installed here in Australia, they did not work well in our conditions and constantly broke so that he removed them again after a year. Interesting, I have a friend who competes in the 4X4 "trial" and nothing bad says of portal axels,, also has some other car(mercedes benz G) that uses to travel, it is sponsored by Tibus (thanks to him I know this German mark), but, I went more to the central control of temperatures, the wheels, central air filling in the wheels, the suspension, portal axels give much maintenance, for those who want to travel over in isolated regions, I had a Experience with a Unimog (Unicat) in Africa, the temperature control is really excellent, it avoids many faults, and the power plant of the wheels can avoid trouble in the middle of a river !! I am thinking of importing a Land Rover Defender 6X6 from Australia (ex.army) and make a small expedition vehicle, mechanics all Mercedes and resort to Tibus and nowadays it is increasingly difficult to enter national parks with trucks ( Even with unimog), who knows if we meet in the middle of Australia one of these days?
Hi, as I said portal axles are great for competitions or rock crawling, not sure about Tibus ones given what I heard but maybe they fixed their issues. I had another guy from Japan contacting me on FB who also had his Tibus portals broken several times. It would be an expensive try. The Perenties are great vehicles with the 4DB1 engine they are nearly unbreakable I'm also considering a build :-).
Everything has its limit, even the best steel breaks, many people break differential, others never left any, because they are careful, they say that the Dynatrac differentials are very good and even they are, but, whoever breaks them, these portal axels do not fail The rule, I mentioned this Tibus, more for the wheels, central tire inflation system and temperature monitor! I think (in my humble opinion) that is what is missing in your Defender! As for portal axels, I know it has a defensive, even with the directional rear axle, I've seen the videos all (some even repeated), I swear I'm even thinking about importing a Defender 6X6 from Australia! And they are not very expensive (I get notification for every auction they make) to make a small expedition vehicle, I have a friend in Holland who has already imported one, is currently working on it, and I wait to see how it is, realized the idea ?

yes, I agree everything can break, but the Tibus portals broke on every driver he did when every other car had no breakage, but this was a while ago maybe they have improved them now. The Maxi Drive Portals in my Defender are in there for ten years and had one broken half shaft in all that time (which is designed to be the weakest point). While I like tyre inflation system and heat monitoring, it again adds more things to fail, given that once offroad I don't need to vary my pressure too often and the temperature is also no issue. In Australia, the requirements may be a bit different then in Europe, if you drive for hundreds of kilometres on highly corrugated roads not sure how well the pressure monitoring would survive this. If Tibus like me to test some of their gear in the harshest conditions happy to try it and give my honest feedback.

+David McCafferty need space behind driver seat for kids and with my size and recaro seat I have around 8cm. Was ok while kids were little but not anymore
