- Deer Hunting with the Ruger American Ranch 7.62x39! I was using some handloads with Nosler Varmageddon bullets, which I will not use again on deer.
Thanks for Watching!
The Hooligan Outdoors - Zábava
This rifle is still my favorite in my safe , shoots cheap ammo accurate never a lite primer strike either , I’ve taken 2 deer and 2 hogs in last couple seasons with it
Yea it's been my favorite and my go to for a few years now. The thing will shoot almost any ammo near 1" at 100 yards. lol
Mine has had a lot of light primer strikes
Nice job! I shot a buck day before yesterday with the Howa mini action 7.62*39 at 57 yards. Using the Hornady Black ammo, the bullet broke both shoulders and exited. Recoil and report were insignificant. Couldn't be more happy with this rig for an Eastern hardwoods set up! Keep it up and Happy Thanksgiving!
Thank you sir! I've shot the Hornady Black with this rifle before and it loves it! I just can never find it on the shelves anywhere not days.
Using the tailgate as a loading ramp is genius 👌
It gets the job done a little easier! 🤣👍
@@TheHooliganOutdoors
Definitely going to try that ramp setup on my Tacoma.
Shot 3 deer with a SKS up in Canada, beautiful deer rifle.
Bullet choice make a huge difference.
Excellent shot at 300. Yeah I agree with your assessment. Those Nosler's are not the pills you should be rocking for deer. That shot should have laid him low with ease. The fact you had to reach out to him a second time. Speaks to only one lung being down.
Hope the boy collects that second buck.
Trying to get my oldest daughter her first buck this season.
Wish y'all continued luck.
Yep, noslers are a no go, but that's why I like to test real world results and I will not use them again for deer no doubt. I've hit hogs at 280 with this rifle and different bullets and dropped them. I also agree, I'm pretty sure it just clipped one lung and he likely would have laid there and died, but it would have taken a while. I wish I woulda seen him bedded before he took off and I coulda just watched him. How old is your daughter and when does the season start for you? Good luck to you two as well!
@@TheHooliganOutdoors She's 16. We never got her in front of a buck this season and she doesn't bow hunt yet.
So she will have to hold out for the 2023 season to bloody her 350 Legend.
Y'all have a happy new years.
Nice shot. Had same results with 7.62x39 slow kills unless under 50 yds. Back to 243 or 30-06( what I got), just need them to drop sooner. I used standard federal soft points. which were very accurate in the cz. Caliber just doesn't have the oomf needed after a 100 yds for my liking.
Yea I knew I was pushing it taking it out to 300 yards, but I shoot that range quite a bit and felt pretty confident I could make a good shot. I think that was just to much distance for that particular bullet. I wont use those again on deer, probably stick with the hornady sst for deer from here on out.
I have a few boxes of Nosler Varmageddon and now wishing I did more research on these bullets before buying boxes of them. Then again, those were the only bullets available at the time for my x39mm. I'll be looking into the Hornady SST you had earlier. Thanks again for the time, effort and aftermath check on the results of the bullet. Glad you found the buck...good stuff for the freezer.
Yes sir, I actually shot a coyote with these bullets a few weeks ago. It dropped, I'm standing there recording myself talking about it, next thing I know about a minute later the darn thing gets up and runs off never to be found! lol. I guess I should learned right then, but I just though maybe I made a bad shot on it. They are some darn accurate bullets out of this rifle though, I'll give them that.
I shoot the Hornady SST’s in mine and it’s a great bullet. I’ve taken 3 bucks with it so far and they haven’t gone more than a few yards before they drop. Last buck dropped in its tracks.
Yea the last buck I shot with the sst's dropped where he stood also. I'll go back to using those.
Shot one with sst in that cartridge no blood he run 130 yards I put it right behind the shoulder 40 yds I learned my lesson next time out used 450 bushmaster blood trail all the way to my deer my go to 450 bushmaster now 7.62 for plinking maybe coyotes
Man, I didn’t see nothing yesterday except coyotes. So I busted them lol, took the old Marlin 30/30 out with some reloaded leverevolution, those yotes didn’t stand a chance.
I still haven’t found one of those rugers. Great hunt brother! Keep them coming.
Oh yea I bet that 3030 smacked those yotes! lol
I really like the 7.62x39. I handload using Hornady SST's with Accurate 1680 powder. Tac driver. Varmageddon is very explosive bullet!!!! Congrats on the nice buck!!!
Thank you sir! I have some sst's, I need to find some of that powder and give it that combo a try!
i do the same thing. Those SST's and 1680 turn it into a tack driver. Can't wait to take it out this year. I have a stand in western NY - where I typically don't take a shot over 30 ( ~80-100 through thicker brush pending on the time of year).
Enjoyed the video. I have a CZ 7.62x39 I hunt with and shot a 8 point this last hunting season. Used Winchester soft points. Have a Blessed Day Friend! Justin
Ahhh thats a rifle I've wanted for several years. Hopefully I will come across one someday. But I want the regular CZ527, not the carbine version.
Famous last words. "Oh man its going to be fun to get him outta here" lol
Yea it was a bit of a pain, but not as bad as I thought it was going to be. lol
Great shot! Good buck, way to go.
Thank you sir, I appreciate it!
Got this exact rifle at the beginning of this year and I’m real happy with it. Annoying to get deer rounds for it but I managed to find some. Best purchase I’ve made. Very accurate rifle and deadly. With only having 5 acres to hunt, I managed to get 3 deer this season with it. I hope you’re having a awesome season. I’d like to hunt some open pasture sometime in the future. Awesome buck!
Thats awesome that you found this rifle! A lot of people arent able to find them right now. Congrats on the 3 deer! Hornady Black is very accurate and has the SST bullet which works well on deer.
@@TheHooliganOutdoors I ordered a couple of boxes of Hornady Black but I’m on back order and there’s no telling how long I’ve got before I actually receive them. But I’m glad I got it when I did. Another guy in the store said he was gonna buy it if I didn’t. But if you don’t mind me asking, what part of Oklahoma do hunt you from? I’m from the NE
Russian steel soft points are 🔥 in this rifle and will take any deer you out in front of it
@@JoseCruz-tu9nxI’ve been told the Russian soft points don’t do well for deer, that they don’t expand very well
Very nice! I've seen all of your videos featuring that rifle. I have the same gun and usually have a night vision scope and bipod on it for hogs but I just put a glass scope on it for deer season and so far it's killed 2 does and a 4 point. Most of my shots on deer and hogs are around 80 yards but one of my does was 120. Ive been using either a Tula 154 grain SP or Wolf 125 grain SP. Pretty much got the freezer filled with that rifle
That's awesome! And it's an awesome rifle, I love mine! I wish I could find some of the Tula 154 SP in stores somewhere. Someone else mentioned that ammo in the comments and I've never even seen it before. lol
@@TheHooliganOutdoors ive been buying 154 gr sp online for cheap.
I appreciate the video man. I like to hunt with a 7.62x39mm cartridge myself. I've wondered how the Nosler Varmagedden would do on deer and now I know
Yea I won't be using them again for deer that's for sure. lol
@@TheHooliganOutdoors the worst mistake I made hunting was when I was 23. I had an itch for a new rifle. Something with some kick. Went to my local FFL an ordered a new rifle that had just come out. It was a Mossberg 4x4. Synthetic skeleton stock, it was light below 8lbs. Problem is, I ordered it 338. Win mag. I paid $280 for that rifle. I took it opening day of rifle season that year. When I had the opportunity to get a deer, I ruined more meat than I was comfortable with . The neck and landed about 5 foot from the body. I used a 250gr Nosler partition. In my defense I was just getting into the actual science and learned quickly that bigger isn't always better.
Wow, that woulda made for one hell of a video! 🤣
@@TheHooliganOutdoors it would have. In a way I'm glad it wasn't recorded, because I felt like a dumbass after shooting a maybe 150lb doe with that rifle.
Great deer. First shot looked like a heart shot. Surprise is kept going
That's what I thought. Looked good to me, but maybe the deer was a little more angled than I initially thought. I'm not exactly sure.
Great footage. I would think that armageddon bullet would perform well. Thank you for the first hand insight. Ive shot deer with the 6.5 Grendel using a 123gr sst and had good results. Considering the Barnes TTSX bullet.
I have had excellent results loading the 130gr out of an 18” .308. Well done Sir. Much appreciated.
It probably would have done better at closer range. I think it lost to much velocity to fragment and just pencil holed right through the deer. I like to test real world results for myself and now I know these bullets at distance on deer are a no no. lol
Good video
It would appear that shot placement was the failure here, not the bullet, or entire brand as some are quick to blame. For small southern states deer like that and impact speeds at almost 300yds, that would be one of the better bullet options for that task.
Have you had any issues with the rifle not ejecting a spent casing? I just purchased one and it's about 50/50 whether it ejects correctly or if the case just falls in the receiver.
Ahh that sucks man, I've never had any problems with mine not ejecting.
I love the rifle. I have one also . Did not have good luck at all with nosler on deer. I use the Hornady sst or Winchester deer season xp . I have killed more than a few with both . The sst seems to travel deeper through shoulders but deer season xp seems to rupture more vitals . Furthest shot was just under 130 yards .
Yea I plan to stick with the sst or tsx from here on out. I've had good results with both of those.
Awesome job. Looks pretty hefty. Shot a decent 8 or 9 point, depending on how you count it, this morning with my 1911 10mm. Glad I didn’t have any water around like you did though!
oh yea, I seen that on OSA I think. It was like your 4th or 5th deer taken with that pistol? That's awesome, I wanted to try to get another one with my pistol this year, but it seems like the bucks were mostly hanging out in the open wheat field at longer distances.
Yeah, I wish more folks would try pistols for hunting around here. It’s a blast. Anyway, keep up the good work. Damn if your boy didn’t set that one down right there! Doesn’t seem fair after what you had to do.
Yea he usually always hunts with the x39 ranch, but after my hunt I was like nah, you're using the 308, I ain't going through that back to back days lol
Awesome, I'm trying to figure out a good 30mm scope to put on mine. One on it, a 1-6x, isnt bad, but like to have a little more zoom like a 2-10x if can find it. Don't want to buy diff rings, so staying with 30mm tubes.
I think the vortex strike eagle is a 1-8x with a 30mm tube, but it's a little pricey. Would cost as much as the rifle probably. lol
@@TheHooliganOutdoors I will figure something out, eventually. Got a primary arms on it now.
@@TheHooliganOutdoors What scope you running? Regular duplex?
I have a 30mm Burris Fullfield E2 on mine. It's clear as a bell and tough as nails. Held zero after I bumbled it out of my tree stand 15ft! I highly recommend it!
@@hedge7743 I've been a fan of Burris for a long time. You might have to send me a link to that one to check out. I could be wrong, but to me Burris quality might be going down hill as they keep changing their different scope series to be made in China. Ive got some Burris scopes, not seen the one you mentioned. I was considering a Bushnell elite 4500. I've not always been super happy with Bushnell, but haven't tried any in their elite series. I think they are South Korean made now, so who knows. I think the Burris fullfield IV series that are China made need some improvement. Especially on the zoom ring texture. I don't want to get too carried away on just a x39 round either. Its not a long range round. Not against China made if its quality, just hate all these companies are caving. If I didnt already have the 30mm rings, I would probably do a fullfield e1 3-9 with duplex. Wish they did that on in a 2-10x to 2-12x range. I like that series tube better with the texture on zoom ring.
What ammo do you use?
If I go by the 1000ftlb rule, 298 is way to far (about 720ftlb)...
I like my ranch in 7.62x39, but unsure if it is good enough or I just train more with my .308...
Yea that's what I've read on the internet. Couple years ago I dropped a buck pretty much in that same spot I think at 280 yards. I've also taken hogs out to 300 and one further than that with this rifle. I just like to test real world results for myself. I definitely will not be using these particular bullets on deer again, lesson learned.
@@TheHooliganOutdoors I see... I think I'm terrible at tracking and all for the high-shoulder shots. So combining these two, I'll stick with the 308.
But thanks for sharing the experience! :)
I just bought one of these to replace my .243....what is a good round you recommend. The farmmeddgon (not sure the spelling) didn't seem to perform well.
Hornady Black for sure and its very accurate out of this rifle.
Nice shots brother
Thanks man, I wish the first shot would have done the job, but that's hunting sometimes.
nice , im going to be uploading some 762 hunting videos soon, im usin a 150gr Speer :) great little deer round!
Oh hell yea, let me know when you do and I'll check them out.
Great shot at 300 ! Have you tried Tulammo 154gr soft points ?
I do like the 154gr Russian loading. Not as easy to find these days. And it wasn't abundant before the ammo ban.
I've never even seen Tulammo soft points anywhere. Academy only ever has Tula fmj. I'd love to find them and try them out though.
Good stuff it and the Wolf soft points. Haven’t seen any for sale in a long time and my supply is dwindling. Just a few years ago $9 a box.
Great hog killers.
Tula 154 grain are great deer rounds. Check Ammoseek.
@@TheHooliganOutdoors My MAK-90 and PSA KS-47 are both good to go for hunting with the Wolf 124gr SP. Have some from back in the day. Online will probably be your best chance to find the SP ammo, as another commented.
PS checked, and SG ammo has the 154 gr Tula SP for sale as of this update
Have you ever used Monarch hollow points 123g for a hunt? If so, did it work? I have a bunch of that and tula SP and hornady black BTHP. Are they BTHP any good for hunt?
That's what I usually have this gun sighted in with when It's not deer season. I use them on hogs because it's cheap and accurate. The hogs I've shot have ran a little ways, but went down. Probably not the best ammo to use on a deer, but I'm sure it would get the job done if that's all you had and you make a good shot. I would use those Tula SP's, I've seen a few people comment about those being good. I just can't find them anywhere in stores.
@The Hooligan Outdoors Yeah I have 154g tula sp. I only bought them because this guy at Bass Pro was buying them all and he raved about dropping hogs with it so I bought some.
Next time I'm in okc I will stop by basspro and cabelas and see if I can find some.
Ive had great luck with underwood ammo’s 7.62x39 in my ruger ranch. Give em a try!
I assume you are talking about the Underwood with the lehigh controlled chaos bullets? I think I can get just the controlled chaos bullets to load myself, so I may give those a try. I just got some hornady interock and ppu sopftoints in the mail this week to load.
Nice shot! My son took his first 2 doe with this rifle this year at 8 years old. We use the hornady sst steel case, it’s good stuff. Both deer dropped within 40 yards. What suppressor are you running or what one would you recommend for this rifle? I want to take the plunge and get one for this rifle.
Ahh man, I loved the steel case sst's, I use to buy the 50rd box at academy all the time, but then they got discontinued. Now I load my own sst's. I just wanted to give these varmageddons a try. Thats awesome that your son got a deer at 8 years old! I have the Yankee Hill Machine Nitro 30 suppressor. I dont really have any experience with any other suppressors. I think I looked at the silencerco harvester also when I bought mine and although it was lighter, it was a few inches longer, which I did not like.
Nice buck!
Thank you sir!
Great video! I got a 7 point a few days ago with the 7.62x39, leaves a better blood trail then a lot of the newer aerodynamic cartridges. I have had good luck with lehigh controlled chaos bullets, that may be something you want to try.
Nice man, congrats on the deer! I've heard a couple people say those are good bullets. I think I seem some at academy in 308 and they looked like a pretty big hollopoint if I'm thinking of the right ones?
@@TheHooliganOutdoors yep. They are all copper hollow points.
How was it when hunting? Heard they Fragment violently and could hit unturned areas. I have a few boxes of it
@Nomad they work on hogs, never tried the lehighs on deer but I would bet that they work fine.
@@bcjdwbiernfjherwfbowfib thanks!
I built a 7.62 ar last summer and just got a doe with it this season, used a Barnaul 123gr HP. Shot right behind the shoulder, her front legs went out and she kicked with her rears for 15 feet and dropped. Hollow points are nasty on deer
Niiiice 👌
I’m seriously thinking about grabbing one of these rifles for deer. With the price of ammo now it would be awesome to run 7.62x39, which I have a ton of. I have to check but I’m pretty sure I have some Wolf and Tul JSP ammo somewhere in my stash.
It's an awesome rifle, but I've heard they are pretty hard to find right now.
Have you gotten to try it yet with the wolf or tul? Just for a ar in 39 and seen a lot saying the Russia ammo don’t expand enough
300 yards is an excelled shot with that round! Are you adjusting your scope for that distance or do you just have like a 200 yard zero and hold high at that range?
I check the drop at my range for 300 yards, so I know exactly how many clicks to adjust it if I need to take a shot at that distance. In this case, with the rifle suppressed and this ammo it's 19 clicks counter clockwise on the elevation. That's also why my top scope cap is off in the video.
If you set your first zero at 25 yards your second zero is close to 300 with this cartridge an you wouldn't need to hold up or turret adjust. Deer lungs are big enough for you to have a 4 inch up and down range from your zero point.
@spaceman51974 you had me curious so I went into my ballistics calculator and assuming a bc of .250 on the low end for your standard soft points and 2500 fps yielded a .9 drop at 25 yards and a 4.9 inch drop at 250 with roughly 780 ft lbs of energy so I would not be comfortable taking a shot over 225 with what you describe unless I had access to much higher end hunting ammo which I couldn't find at all this last season.
I was also curious of energy at 300 yrds as well as hold over at that distance, assuming zero at 100 yrds
Good hunt. Obviously he was not int the best shot position, but sometimes you have to take the shot you are given. Haha that creek looks fun
Yea the way the deer were moving, I don't think it was going to come my way and I felt confident taking that shot since I practice a lot at 300 yards. I just got some hornady 123gr interlock and some ppu softpoints in he mail this wek to start reloading. They should work better.
Digging that rifle set up. Mind telling me the barrel thread size? Hopefully 5/8 x 24.
yep, 5/8"x24. It's an awesome rifle!
@@TheHooliganOutdoors Thanks
Great job! What suppressor do you have on your Ruger American?
Thank you sir, it's a yankee hill machine nitro 30 👍
Nice Shot surprised It even moved after that Head Shot Good to see ya Post a Video
I think this somehow got posted on the wrong video, but yea it's been a little while. I have been out hunting A LOT and just haven't seen any hogs, until now. lol
First shot (left side) was a good quartering away placement but struck low and looked like it came in behind the ribs.
Was diaphragm punctured?, stomach/intestines damaged? Left side lung bottom nicked?
Took a shot at an 8 pointer yesterday in 6 degree weather with the ruger and the rifle went "click" nothing came out of the barrel. I guess I should take the bolt apart and get rid of the oil/grease in it.
Oh wow, that's some bad luck. What ammo were you using? 6 degrees is COOOOOLD! lol
@@TheHooliganOutdoors barnaul Hollow point
Nosler Varmageddon rounds are varmint rounds. They're designed to fragment early, not penetrate. Try the Hornady Black.
Yea I think it just pencil holed. I will probably use SST's next year.
I would like to try 7.62x39 but I don't know how it would fair w plains co Muel deer
Great working gun…🇺🇸
probably my favorite rifle to hunt with, although not ideal for shots on deer at 300 yards. hah!
At that distance for this round, you are around 1800 fps which is very close to an ethical velocity for white tail.
Shooting suppressed?
I have tried the Tulammo 154gr SP with great results.
I've heard that from several other people. I want to try them, I just can't ever find them locally.
Anybody else wondering if you got a twofer?
Woulda been sweet, I had plenty of tags.
Nice buck I have the same rifle what's that thing at the end of the barrel does it quite the gun at all
its a yankee hill machine suppressor. it makes it quieter, but not like you see in the movies kind of quiet. lol
Might want to do some expansion tests on those bullets at longer range it might not have the energy and velocity to expand as intended
a wet stack of news papers (let them soak for a longtime at least few hours) taped together does the job you can test at multiple ranges to figure out how far you want to go with the ammo
Good idea, I will try that out and also compare them with the sst's. Also you are probably right about the energy. I know 300 yards it pushing it with that round, but I thought if I made a good shot it would go down. I felt good about the shot and tried to aim for the front right leg as the bullet path, but I think maybe he was angled a little more than I thought.
7.62x39 is rolling dice once it slows down at range it still puts a nice hole going in but the one coming out IF it comes out is when things get wild
Nice 👍
Thanks man!
What name brand of ammo do you use?
I was using some handloads this time with Nosler Varmageddon bullets, but I will not use them again on deer.
What ammo do you like using for it
The Barnes seem to do the best with expansion and retaining weight, but the Hornady SST's are a little more accurate. The Varmageddons are just as accurate as the SST's, so I wanted to give them a try on deer, but I think it's a no go for them.
@@TheHooliganOutdoors ok thanks
@@TheHooliganOutdoors the Barnes do not expand in my limited experience. They act more like a FMJ.
I got some DOUBLETAP with Barnes TSX bullet for that Ruger 7.62x39 👍
oh niiice, those should work very good!
Shot one this year with mine no blood trail with heart shot at 30 yards ran 125 yard before piling up no blood trail at all switched to 450 bushmaster now dropping them with authority will use 7.62 on coyotes or practicing only
oh yea, the 450 bm is a beast!
Was that a gut shot on the first shot because it looked low on video
The guts were fine when I gutted it. I was aiming for that front right leg for the bullet path. It did look low on video, but the two exit holes on the other side were higher, so I'm not exactly sure. May have just been the video making it look lower than it was. I had a hard time trying to figure it out myself. lol

I've hand drug deer for over a mile, up and down steep ravines, through creeks, thick forest, over down trees. I think you can drag him up the bank! Good hunt though!
You could line 3 of them !
I had tags for all of them if that would have happened! lol
Farmageddon's are literally what they sound they're meant for varmints and fragment extremely quickly
What you want is something similar to a Hornady SST
Hornaday sst. All day
Defiant munitions makes a 124g bullet for 7.62x39 check them out
Hornady SST.
No doubt. I will stick with those or the barnes tsx from here on out.
Did not know Hunters gutted the animal on site
I believe most do. It's better to get the guts out of the animal so it can start cooling off. It also makes it a lot lighter to load or pack out if you are alone.
@@TheHooliganOutdoors The more we know. Thank you
I finally found one of these in stores this summer. I was pumped to shoot a deer with it, but our 9 day season just closed with no shots fired. Had some does come out 20 minutes before dark tonight, but a coyote started barking at me from across the creek and didnt stop. I wish I could've gotten eyes on that sucker, ida give him what for.
Wow, most people can't find one of these rifles anywhere now days. That sucks you weren't able to get a deer with it, maybe you have some hogs you can hunt? Also your rifle season is only 9 days? That would be tough. Ours is 2 weeks here.
@The Hooligan Outdoors Nebraska, we get Saturday to Sunday to hunt and no hogs. That coyote put a target on his back though, might go back tonight with my dog and try to decoy him out. I felt real lucky finding this rifle, had seen one a few weeks before and within 20 minutes, someone bought it off the rack. Now I want one in every caliber, lol. I really want one in 6.5 grendel.
Yea they are great rifles for the money. I also have the Predator in 308 and Ranch in 450 Bushmaster. My son shot the other buck in the video last night with the 308. I'll probably have that video up pretty soon.
Your shot was low, and not at a great angle. You can see shock wave, bullet and then impact at 2:39-2:40 in video.
Not sure if it is because of weight of projectile causing the drop or not at that distance.
I have a ranch rifle in 223rem to hunt deer ,fox and wildboar I love it.
In my opinion 7,62x39 is a bad caliber don't have powerful and is same
engine without gasoline 😂
3 letters bro… A T V
Sad thing is I have one lol
Varmegeddon ammo while using a 7.62x39 on deer man? Glad you’ll be smarter next time. I would bet pretty much any typical soft point (even russian made steel cased ones) would have made for a better deer hunting bullet than one specifically designed for coyotes & varmints when it comes to terminal performance on deer. Nosler accuracy be damned, if a Tula brand 154 grain soft point 762x39 can hit a lung sized target (which it will), it’ll end a deer easier than any brand of varmint ammo
Smart idea to use varmint rounds on deer. This is what's not ethical hunting.
Bet you buy a bigger rifle now
Great idea not to use varmint bullets for deer.🤨
🤣
Terrible low shot...and that is NOT a 300yds cartridge. According to what you put on the video that was over 298yds. If you are gonna hunt...BE RESPONSIBLE!
Please stop killing animals
I just bought a ruger Mark II M77 stainless 7.62x39. Plan on using it for doe this fall. But, from what I can find, this caliber is really only good out to 150 yrds. Anything beyond that ft/lbs dissipate exponentially. From 100 to 200 yrds the holdover is like 10 inches. 300yrd shot seems incredibly irresponsible from what I'm reading?
I dropped a buck one shot in that same spot in 2020 at 277 yards. Also killed a hog at about 280 and one closer to 300 when they ran with that same rifle, however I would not suggest you try that. Stick to 150 and you will be fine. Also shoot at 200 to find your drop. Don't assume the calculators and drop charts will be right.
@The Hooligan Outdoors good advice, thanks brother!
