I always thought Caan's laugh was inspired by Chucky from the "Child's Play" films. Seriously, listen to Chucky's laugh, and then listen to Caan's laugh and tell me if they sound similar.

Dalek Time Strategist also made a habit of laughing at the Doctor when it's voice changed to be more like the Time Controllers. In Memnos and The Hybrid's Choice, he laughs more naturally when he wins against the Doctor.
Memnos especially, when he knows he's on the verge of winning, he's taunting and laughing to get a rise out of the War Doctor in a similar way to how Davros does. It's really fascinating.
Maybe at that point in the War the Strategist had become more emotive and said to hell with 'acting like a Dalek'.
Time Sensitive Daleks are a can of worms unto themselves.

The DTS laugh in Restoration of the Daleks is so messed up. It finds the situation hilarious, and it wants to laugh, but it’s like its body just can’t quite make it happen. Worst of all, it’s not even like the DTS is insane like Caan was; it’s very, very sane. It’s fascinating and monstrous and terrifying.

I always think of Joe Vevers’:
    “COMMENCE LAUGHING
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA”
The thing about laughter is that it’s an involuntary physiological response, it’s very hard to imagine even if a Dalek had the capacity for a sense of humour for it to laugh. Given that it’s generally shown that the machines make the voice, I’m kinda reminded of Baymax trying to make an explosion noise and just imagine the vocal system going nuts to create the nearest thing to the noise.

I personally think all Daleks are capable of it, they just don't need to in the grand scheme of things. I think the Daleks are more interesting when they can feel similar emotions to humans but in a completely Dalek way, like how the Recon Scout's laugh isn't recognisable as a laugh to us at all, or how Daleks do have a sense of fun and enjoyment, but in the case of Dalek Sec it comes from belittling all those they see as inferior, or how they get enjoyment in making a human or other species suffer

We see with Rusty that the Dalek casing also seems to contribute to their ability to feel emotion so maybe when the casing isn't present or is damaged the mutant is capable of laughter, could partially explain Caan and the Recon Scout since they were out of the casing and also maybe the Jubilee and Metaltron, Metaltron did repair the casing but maybe the circuitry wasn't fully repaired at that point (plus Rose's humanity). The enhanced thing can explain the rest.

I always associate Caan's laughter with Dalek insanity.
Even stories that deal with Insane Daleks without the laughter such as The Parting of the Ways and Asylum of the Daleks I can hear Caan's giggles whenever I think of those stories.

When I write Daleks for my fanfic storylines, I constantly find I give them too much emotion, but...maybe, I can sneak some in. Sorry, I do keep bringing up my project, it's just how things have worked out. I'm nearly done with it, and as its reaching its final stages, I found this channel. I haven't had them laugh, but I have had them express emotions such as depression over failing the Dalek cause, Though heres a thing I came up with years ago that might be worth a thought. How would two co-ruling emoerors sound? To the point where when something goes wrong, they have different reactions that affect their empire. One goes off to think on how to fix it while the other becomes timid and withdrawn or something, leaving the supreme daleks to pick up the pieces. Just some thoughts I am having.

To be fair, we have heard little bits of Dalek language. Terms like "Time War" have had Dalek names given to them, and the literal name the Daleks have for the Doctor, the one which we hear as The Oncoming Storm, is "Ka Faraq Gatri."

I think it helps to know that they have electrodes tapped directly into their brains that translate thoughts into speech. They LITERALLY think like machines to a degree.
Plus, I always imagined a Dalek being granted more autonomy & personality is seen as more of a privilege or a reward in the Dalek Hierarchy.

  • @oliverknagg5109
    @oliverknagg5109 Před 2 měsíci

I think there are two more factors at play, human influence and access to a casing. The Jubilee dalek had long been a prisoner of humans, so had Metaltron who was also afflicted with aspects of Rose Tyler’s humanity and the Recon scout was talking vicariously through a human. Mad Caan and the Recon scout were also apart from their casings or inhabiting one that was severely damaged or poor quality and we know from Moffat era stories that the casings play a role in regulating emotions. Once the recon scout is back in a casing it seems to lose some of its particular sadism and behaves more like any other dalek, only to regain it again after the casing is destroyed. I don’t remember if the high priest in ‘The Elite’ laughs (his casing was also damaged) but he also shows an understanding of irony, remarking before his assassination that his killer had learnt from him. Since he was building a fascist human society he was also exposed to the regular influence of humans.

daleks could also laugh in occassions just to anger their enemy if they are in a position where they cannot destroy or exterminate their enemy right away. I mean if you hate them then pissing them off would be effective in expressing that hatred, so if laughing at them would do so why not do it? Tactical mockery.

Generally I liked your snappy, direct visual-only approach to clip accompaniment for these but I think for the videos like this that are specifically about music, sound effects or vocal performance not including some audio of what you're talking about really hurts the analysis- it forces the viewer to go on just their interpretation of the general idea of your assessment of the audio in question, especially if it's from a source they haven't watched/listened to or don't remember. It just makes the whole thing a bit critically inaccessible. Obviously there might be issues with CZcams's copyright system but using the clips in context is much more defensible as fair use commentary than your pure clip uploads, and those seem to do okay.
