If you want to change anything about the electronics with this guitar, you would unscrew the input Jack, unscrew the pots with the knobs taken off, and pull everything through the pick up cavity. Then you would make whatever changes you want to do outside, and then use a wire to pull everything back through to the input Jack and holes for pick ups. Strings and hooks.
Every luthier, repair person and DIY ninja far and wide let out a big sigh whenever he asked about the electronics XD
I want to sart a hollow electric project for months now, I inherited an Gibson L-48 and I'm really loving the body shape, way more comfortable to play in the lap than I thought it would be. It's got me looking at weird Soviet L-5 copies on reverb just so I don't have the urge to Frankenstein my Grandpa's old archtop lol.
Great to hear those clean melodic tones. Really gets me jazzed.
Wow that's great warm tone for acoustic cleans. Love it.
Great jam thanks for sharing
Beautiful composition that you played on the clean part in the beginning. Very nice !
Thank you very much!
That was spectacular
I bought the Donner semi-hollow as my Christmas gift. This one sounds good too! Thanks for sharing!
How do you like the Donner? All the Donner stuff I've had has been very good.
The sound is really smooth, great playing!
Thanks! Something different for me.
Dude that jam was amazing! You killed it 🤟🎸 Also thanks for the shout-out man 😎
You got it!
Just ordered one, Cheap and beautiful Love the sound and finish
I bought mine (red also) and loved it as-is. I did make a few changes. Added a .25 inch spacer under the pickup. Had a Wilkinson P-90 bridge pickup in my box of random parts and swapped it out with the factory pickup. Changed to phosphor bronze d’addario acoustic rock strings with a wound-G. Fretboard was very dry and soaked up a LOT of lemon oil. That’s it so far and it sounds great. Picked up a replacement bridge with roller saddles but haven’t put it on yet.
You played an amazing song there. Almost expected to hear you sing a ballad. Very entertaining video. Nice guitar. Thanks. Thumbs up.
Thank you very much!
I really like this one. Sounds so nice and mellow, then you even made it rock a little. Neat!
🤘
Great demo Richard, that looks and sounds awesome man 😀🤘🎵🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thanks Adam
The guitar really sounds great and so does your playing.
Thanks!
That looks such a beautiful guitar❤
Sounds great with the stock pickup, saddle, pots, etc. I am sure 99.99% of people in an audience hearing you play this guitar with just a string change can't tell the difference with updated pots and pickups.
7:25 - It is ABSOLUTELY possible to replace the pots, switches, and electronics on this guitar. Typically on hollow and semi-hollow guitars, you have to do the soldering outside the body and then fish the components through the F holes. Slightly more difficult than on a solid body guitar, but not much. Practically ANY luthier worth his salt should have experience with this and be able to do it without too much trouble. So I wouldn’t worry too much about that. 🙂
Love to try this for slide!
Wow! I think I'm sold.
Sweet!
Bought one today! Great video..
Hope you enjoy it!
I walked into a bar one night and it had a staircase going up to where the band was and I could hear the most amazing sounding guitar on the stairs. I mean it was noticeably better than anything I've ever heard I couldn't wait to just see what it was. When I reach the top of the stairs I was in amazement it was a Gibson 330 and it was played loud through a marshall combo. It had the most warm incredible sound that I rarely ever hear because usually guys are playing solid bodies.
Very cool
I thought you were going to say it was this guitar in the video 😂 you almost had me
@@larry2icytv111 not exactly but this guitar is similar to the Gibson construction wise it is semi Hollow with air Chambers.
I bought one for $189 before the holidays, but I had to do a fret leveling, file sharp fret ends, put a 1/4” spacer under the pickup to get it closer to the strings, replaced the nut with a Tusq Nut, and put Grover Tuners on it. The finish is really beautiful.
Without a doubt all of those things would make this one better too. But even just out of the box, it plays and sounds pretty darn good.
@@thebaldshredder Yes, they are well worth the money.
I bought this model for my son's friend. She was finishing a guitar program & wanted a single pickup, hollow body for jazz. I. He wanted to originally build her a new guitar, but didn't understand how much was involved. I convinced them to get a lower price instrument & finish it properly. He visited during xmas break & we had a good time in the shop. It was a decent build, but we spent 4 days getting it up to snuff.
The inlays were proud of the fretboard, the frets weren't really well shaped or polished. 1st the fretboard was properly finished, edge rolled for playability, then the frets were leveled, filed & polished. All electrics were pitched; Kent Armstrong vintage neck P90, new vol, custom 6 way varitone & better output jack, were installed. Finally the neck was rubbed down to remove most of the poly & buffed to a smooth satin finish. Restrung w/flatwound Thomastik strings. The headstock is a bit clumsy & I would have re-cut & drilled out out to make it more in line w/the look. Not enough time & that was purely cosmetic.
When finished, a few of my friends were enlisted to revue(with headstock covered). Favorite quote, "This guitar plays better than anything I have at the store!". I guess we did alright.
Sound was awesome.
All total, the upscale parts were a little less than the price of the guitar. So, for
Another great demo, review, and video. Your clean jam at the beginning is the style of guitar I play the majority of the time, as in almost exclusively. I just throw in a little delay, reverb, and tape echo from time to time, when the mood hits. I'm glad you made this video. (Note, I think the repairs are done through the F-Holes. If you want to change something and are that concerned about being able to get the pot back in place, just tie something like fishing line to the pot when you pull it through the F-Hole. You can untie it and tie it to the new or re-soldered pot when you want to pull it back through. Now, the pickups would probably present more of a challenge.) Please keep the great videos coming, Richard.
Glad you liked it!
@@thebaldshredder easiest way to install pots is to run a piece of bendable wire into the pot hole and angle it back out through the pickup opening or the f-hole. Attach the wire to the pot stem then feed it back into the body cavity and withdraw end of the wire back out of the pot hole, bringing the pot into place. Feed the loose end of the wire through the washer and nut and run them down the wire into the stem and use the wire to keep the pot in place as you tighten the nut and washer in place.
Great playing! The P90's are so versitile. Sounds great mellow and with the "growl"!
Thanks
I have the same probs with the Pot on an axe im workin on. Eric C made a good vid a while back.using very small wire to pull them through. Rock on Bro
Awesome job Richard! You continue to show how versatile and adaptable you are! I’ve always been curious about a hollow body but I have never played one. I don’t care for an acoustic dreadnaught because they are so thick bodied and hard to fret. But one of these, maybe 🤔…
Thanks
Cool jam thumbs
Crank it through a marshall combo for natural distortion for some 60s-70s blues rock. The feedback can be hard to control but the air moving around inside the guitar combined with the natural distortion creates such a beautiful warm sound.
Awesome 🎼🎸🎶
Nice playing
Thanks
Nice very cool
@the bald shredder
I don't know if anyone else mentioned it but, the two ways I know of for getting the pots into the holes without a rear access panel is to 1- ties thread or string to the original pots before removing them or use rubber tubing which will slip over the shaft of the pots. Then you use the string or tubing to pull the new pots into position. The other way is to try and get your fingers into the f hole to manipulate the pots into place.
Yes a few have mentioned that. Thanks.
You have to fish them thru the F Holes. It's tricky. Thanks for Sharing. Nice Guitar.
Almost like a jazz guitar looks and sounds great playing is very good also thanks
Came back to relisten. This tone is beautiful. I need this tone. Hahah heck I need the skill. Hahah
This song is on my new album Speed of Light.
That jam was sweet!
Thanks! Glad you like it.
This guitar reminds me of my 1962 Gibson ES 125T, tobacco sunburst, with the jelly mold pickguard. I wish I never would have sold it.
Very cool! Yes, not easy to get to electronics😁
This guitar would be good for rock and roll and folk rock!
That was a real nice piece you did on this one
To change pickups/pots you have to fish it through. Major pain.
Cool guitar for sure
Thanks Andy
A floating bridge means that the bridge is not glued or pined or bolted to the body. It moves around when there is no string tension. To not alter the intonation when changing strings, change one string at a time.
Sounds great all I can say
I think the type of solos this guitar will really shine on are slow simple melodic with less notes . Focusing on feel and tone (if played with natural tube distortion). I know that typically isn't your style but for stuff like The Doors or Allman Bros for example this is a perfect match .
Sounds about right to me
Cool
You tie fishing line on the shaft of the pots, and pull them out thru the largest part of the f hole, to replace the pots you simply take the fishing line off the shaft of the old pots, hook it to the shaft of the new pots and pull the fishing line and pots right back into place, make sure everything is soldered together first&, mimics the old wiring.
Good to know! Thanks.
like 10 reminds me of the The Loar!!!
I've been considering one of these, but something I've noticed is a lack of either a gig bag or case being made available for the Jazz Guitar style (neither Grote nor Redid labels seem to show them anywhere). If you have found a suitable bag or hard case, could you share what make and model you use (or modified for use)? Thank you so much, and thank you for your videos ~
I haven't tried to find a case for it. Right now I just have it sitting in the box.
I had a Grote version. It was pretty good. It was sold when I needed money. I even bought a hard shell case for it. That is how much I liked it. This Redid is probably made in the same place. Only the headstock is different. Next time do some strumming of chords clean when you demonstrate guitars simliar to this.
most people use those guitars for 50's blues, jazz, RnB, brian setzer type music
Yep. And those are all styles that I never play. lol
@@thebaldshredder i have dabbled in them for the sake of learning but i feel like i am more comfortable playing folk metal/powermetal
I have one of these from Firefly, but it has cuts around the neck, two HHs. Everyone asks for it when they see it on the wall, but as for getting a lot of playing ...hm , not really
With it being very light, does it have neck dive?
👀👀👀👀 Fantastic to see you playing in a wholly different style!!! NOICE!!!!! By the way, why would a guitar company need to put its name TWICE on a headstock?!?!? 🤔😜😜😜😜
Well now I'm going to tell them to put it THREE times! Thanks.
Not my style but appreciate your demo and playing bro!✌️🤘
I personally would like to hear you play that guitar with a ceramic slide, and to get the switches back through go to a auto parts store or order one but get good telescopic magnetic and it would help you guide it.
Oh man, I've got no idea how to play slide.
@@thebaldshredder Dude you would be surprised how much fun it can be and the really cool sounds you can create, give it a try you will be Amazed
That song was beautiful. Is that yours. I used to have the Grote version of that but it was garbage.
Yours sounds great.
Yes I wrote that song. It's on my new album, Speed of Light, which comes out tomorrow.
There are CZcams vids on how to access electronics. Same issue with 335 styles guitars.
Yep. Super Nice. Metal that thing! Uncomfortably. Lol. Looks Amazing!
Yep 🤘
n.b. the fretboard looks wider than the typical hollow body?
How did you put that jam together are you classicy trained really liked it
I just made it up. Not trained.
Wow that's incredible I am a guitar player also I don't know how to play stuff like that that's great
Dear BS, great review, but I am dissappointed. While you told us about the frets (THANK YOU!) there was no mention at all about the neck profile, the neck/nut width, or the radius of the fingerboard. Please consider an addendum including these details. Finally, you are correct, the pots are fed throught the f-holes for work. Attach a string to the pot shafts. The string is used to re-position pots in their original holes.
Probably goid for sone overdriven bottle neck slide line Elmore james or early Fleetwood Mac a la Jeremy Spencer
Love the playing but missed 1 thing? You didn't give it the stranglehold feedback test 😆😆😆 maybe a cool slide guitar but have to pass need the cut away. Hope they come out with a flying v. I hope they maintain the quality now that you put them on the map. I can't put the sg down. Expensive but I use stringjoy strings big difference for me anyway. I appreciate the reviews✌️
Next time!
Everything changes when you discover that F hole for the first time......
🤣🤣 True Story
I would climb any mountain.
You pull the pickup out enough to clip the wire and solder the new one onto the existing wire.
The clean sounded very much acoustic, I am assuming that also has to do with the fx used?
Yes. I picked a setting in my Line 6 POD Farm that was for acoustic guitar.
this with big strings for proper practice ?? maybe? oh and proper extended chords with silly names.
Can you get a case for it really nice guitar
Probably.
A wooden bridge would make the a beast overdriven.
Haha you made me laugh with The Floating Bridge explanation. The floating bridges that hunk of wood under the saddle which is not glued down to anyting. What you were trying to get your hand under is called the tailpiece Buddy
Ok, well I said I didn't know what I was talking about! So I plead ignorance! lol
@@thebaldshredder
Some days we all have it.
Is this company related to grote? How do they compare?
Same factory/company. Never played a Grote.
What's the price on this guitar very nice
189
No jazz tones? Thanks
Nope. Not a jazz player.
I'm glad I didn't buy Grote version
Grote even admitted that it needs a 100 dollar setup
Your only option is to drag all the electronics through the fholes. Fishing line or something similar helps alot! It's a good time. Not...
I can imagine! 🤓
Or pvc tubing and shove it onto the pot shaft
it is a trapeze tailpiece
Good to know. Thanks.
The pickup is a dog ear, and will come off the top. The switches, can't say!
Fishing line tied to the pot
Have u ever tried to be a comedian? Cause u make me laugh, on all your videos.
I'm still waiting to hear back from Star Search. Ed McMahon, where are you?
Ted Nugent
I think your playing is what sounds good. The guitar itself... not so convinced. I don't see the point in it and life's too short to spend time trying to find a place or play style to suit or justify a guitar purchase. Time is better spent with a more appropriate instrument at the same price. Maybe a young student could benefit from it as a first guitar?
For sure, this guitar does not fit my usual style/choice. But I can't deny that it's made very well. And sounds great!
Interesting: It looks identical to the "Grote" I bought a year ago. I really like your music; I had not heard anything that melodic on any of the other demos. Am subscribing, would also like to know what Amp you are using/ Thanks, Jon
I've been looking at getting either the RD100 or the RZT22 guitar, but I wanted to know if this guitar is lightweight or not? my current guitar weighs a lot and it's hard for me to even carry or pick up, so I'm trying to find a lightwieght one that sounds good.
This is not heavy.
@@thebaldshredder thanks for letting me know!
@@thebaldshredder Sorry I have another question. Between the RZT22 and the fesley guitar, which has a clearer tone, and which weighs the lightest of the two?
Wow you're talking about two different styles of guitar here. The RZT22 only has that one pickup and it's close to the neck so it's a fuller less bright tone. It's wonderful for cleans. But the Fesley has 3 pickups and much better for rock or metal. I don't have the Fesley anymore so can't compare the weight. Both are very good. Just depends on what style of music you want to play on it.
So for your electronic/luthier question depending on how the luthier has things set up they literally might have template/jig to do the basic work so wire length is right and goes in properly there’s other methods but to each their own.
I got mine used for $80. Not going to complain. Not original idea of course but I push on the tail peice to pitch shift the strings. I put on flat wounds btw.
