2021 GLA 45 S! Is the Bigger A45 as Exciting!? Full Review

- The 45 S series latest entry is a sporty crossover for the “lifestyle” customer according to #MercedesAMG. But #AMG sell so many SUVs now, it’s hard to keep track what fits where, and for who.
So I’ve gone to the trouble to show every AMG SUV, here in this video. Then try and decide where this new Rocket from Affalterbach fits in.
So first let’s see what has improved vs the old one. Previous car mimicked the A45 of it’s time with 380BHP, 0-60 of 4.8 seconds from the 4 cylinder single turbo engine. The 4matic was it simplest application, with a maximum of 50% power to the rear. And the car itself was an oddly less practical car than the A45. But despite this it was to my eyes quite good looking in full fat AMG form. Though easily forgotten in front of the A45, the whole GLA was still massively successful with 1 million units sold.
The new car is quite a departure just in pure size, and this needed to happen. 10cms higher, 1.5 shorter. = much more rear space and headroom. But those dimensions had the unintended effect of making it more a small blobby suv rather than a larger hatchback.
The GLA 45 S throws out the simpler AMG formula of standard 4Matic+ 4 cylinder engine and takes all the internals of our Thor, A45S. This is a good thing. The mental new engine producing 421BHP, and 0-60 in a mere 4.3 seconds is fantastic. Torque is higher as is the 7200 rev limit, and the car gets a more open exhaust vs the 35 version meaning lots of pops and bangs! It’s connected to a fast reacting 8 speed DCT. But the best bit is the 4Matic+ system with fully variable power, meaning we can go 100% to rear like the GLE53. But not drift mode, are you heart broken?
Suspension and rigidity are up a notch with a sheer pane up front, and more braces front and rear, and as we saw in A45S, it should add some genuine sporting ability to this mini SUV
Looks wise it doesn’t quite follow the A45S and CLA I having a totally unique design. Rather frustratingly the body work is identical to the 35, something we will explore. That being said, it does look rather GLE and GLC from some angles, which means it’s playing less pretend SUV now.
But the GLA45S faces tough competition just internally, so today we explore:

I think they don't have other choices for the engine. The A45s/CLA45s/GLA45s are close brothers. They are meant to have the same engine. I guess it won't be a GLB45 to come. That car is like an X1 while the GLA is more like an X2. In that case we have an X2M35i but no X1m35i. Not many people will consider a GLB45s while GLC43 SUV exists in that price range. The most exciting (coolest)SUVs in AMG lineup are GLE63s coupe and GLC63s coupe in my opinion.
Hi. Just to correct you on one thing. It can't send 100% power to the rear. Only 50% but it can put the 50% going to the rear on one side, either left or right so that the car can drift
I was just browsing the MB configurator and if you go to the German pages, they have the GTR Black Series. The price doesn't change as you add options but you do get to see it in different colours including green and orange. You also get to see the inside with the track pack in oramge. Some options are blacked out so I assume it is up temporarily. Check it out. Very cool! Also looks amazing in white with all the black details

I'm a fan of the original GLA45, awesome car. I agree worth waiting to see what the GLB 45 brings, this new GLA45s seems to sit between them.
I like the fact that Mercedes AMG seem to be able to carve out new types of car, it keeps them original.
Epic video as always! Just one thing:
it's not 100% to the rear as there is no possibility of separating the front axle. It's maximum 50/50 when either both or one of the two clutches at the rear axle are engaged. What you can is shift 100% of the 50% that reach the rear to one axle, that's how drift mode works.

I like the new look, granted yes the old one looked like a rally hatch but in non AMG trim the old GLA looked horrible to me, it made no sense with less room inside. The new one might compromise looks in AMG trim but the everyday model, to me looks a lot better. It finally has an identity of its own vs the old one. Awesome review as always!

Is there a difference in sound between the 45 and 45s?
Not really, no. Both the GLA 45 and GLA 45 S use the same engine, the M139. The only difference is the M139 in the 45 S makes 421 hp. Unless you mean the _old_ GLA 45 and the _new_ GLA 45 S, and in that case, yes, there is a difference. The old GLA 45 sounds deep and raspy, but the new GLA 45 S lost some of that, and doesn't sound as great.

Are you sure it can send 100% of power to the rear? Or does it send 50% to the rear and then through a clever differential, it can send 100% of that to one of the rear wheels, thus making the car easier to drift?

I have a GLC coupe AMG and it comes with Continental sport tyres which have ONLY lasted me 12km (3 times now) I’ve had enough and want change!
And seeing in this video that the Michelin pilot sport have lasted Mr AMG 10km and still 6mil left. (That’s amazing!) and he was saying he been doing drag races, long drives etc etc etc.
Could you Mr AMG or anyone give me any advise please? I would so truly appreciate it.

I have asked questions of how many settings can you change in the car just by using in-car "voice commands" and not just usual "navigation". It would be great to know how good in-car "voice commands" are. But no "car reviewer" would answer my question.

totally agree on the big letdown in the looks department in the new GLA - it now looks bland and blobby, whereas the first-gen is quirkily handsome. and agree on way too much plastic.

The GLB35 just doesn’t make sense to me, in my eyes the GLB was more of an “old persons” mercedes. Practical, but not as agressive/sporty.. Yet they make an AMG version of it

AMG cars should have an AMG engine, one man one engine, it's all hand built. All the 2nd tier "AMGs" don't have that... they just slap an AMG badge and rebadge the car to make it an AMG. Eg. A250 and they just change that to A35 AMG... to sell more cars. There's nothing AMG about that car whatsoever. '
But people get fooled and buy it and tell everyone they have an AMG.
@@den_525 ...what? I still don't see how the "sEcOnD tIeR" AMG vehicles _aren't_ AMGs. The A35 AMG (yes, that's right, the A35 _AMG_ ) for example, yes, it uses the M260. In the A250, it makes 165kW, but in the A35 AMG, it's got 225kW. So yes, same engine, but where you're wrong is that the A250 and A35 AMG have drastically different outputs.
I mean, do you _really_ think Mercedes-Benz's AMG division is going to rebadge a base model car and pass it off as an AMG? Yeah... no. It's not like AMG is being run by Donald Trump... I'd be shocked if they rebadged a car, especially considering the commitment, engineering, development, investment and innovation they put into their cars and engines. The M139, for example. Its a 2.0L 4-cylinder, that makes 312kW. Nuts. Its the most powerful 4-cylinder, ever. Did they have to make it produce 312kW? No, but they did it anyway.
Furthermore, does AMG have to hand build their engines? No, not really. But they do it anyway, because they're committed. Personally, i've never really seen the point of "hand-building" an engine, it just seems like a very inefficient way to produce engines, and a big waste of time. But eh, that's just me.
Drive an A35 AMG, or another car, such as a C43 AMG, they may be better than you think, especially considering you made videos showcasing exhausts on an M235i, which I can only assume belongs to you. Not an M2, the M235i. And now I ask you, do you think your M235i deserves the M badge?
