Sounds like the destroyers did a horrible job in protecting the Yorktown. I don't know if there was an inquiry into this but there should've been.

Perhaps I am incorrect but, when the Japanese attacked the British carrier HMS Hermes wasn't it without aircraft onboard?
Coral Sea was opposing fleets of aircraft carriers engaging in combat while the sinking of the Hermes really can't be described as such.
    I could be wrong.

You're right. They were in dock, not sure if it was being repaired or routine maintenance or perhaps had just unloaded their aircraft for local fields, but they were warned of an approaching Japanese attack and fled the port without delay.

How ridiculous can you get: "We lured the Americans into the battle of Midway", when the facts were the Americans did not go for Japan's fake attack on the Aleutians, and we set up an carrier ambush for an estimated 4 to 5 IJN carriers attacking Midway in preparation for their, en route, troop landing force, that was forced back, and then we wiped out all 4 IJN carriers they brought, and only lost Yorktown, which was a patched up quickie fix from the strategic victory we had over them at Coral Sea? They had to get that idea from the false propaganda they were feeding the homeland citizens about the "great victory Japan won over America at Midway"!
Meanwhile: Survivors were sent to places where they could not tell the truth of 2/3 of the IJN Pearl Harbor ships, being sunk, with ALL planes lost, and so many crew gone down.
A military in total denial. On a path to total destruction. Sickos.

Stating that the IJN and IJA leadership was composed of sick officers is an understatement of epic proportions.
