    I love medium format, and sometimes getting through the uncomfortable phase is entirely worth it. My Bronica 645 is a gem and maybe the form factor can influence the awkwardness you're feeling with the camera. Regardless, you got good images!

      @JamieMPhoto Před 2 lety +1

      I appreciate that! And thankfully a Bronica ETRS/ETRSi usually runs much cheaper than Mamiya 645s, and the lenses aren't as prone to balsam separation. I'm super pleased with mine!

    I have the same camera and tend to gravitate to more and more as it gives me great results. When using the prism finder I recommend a handle with the shutter trigger on it. It becomes a whole other camera with that set up and a lot easier to hold and compose with. Great portraits.

    35mm is my go-to format because of how portable it is, but I find the process of shooting medium format to be a lot of fun. There are so many different cameras and aspect ratios to explore, and I always love the feel of winding the film advance lever and looking into the waist-level view finder with my TLR and Bronica ETRC. With that being said, I don't shoot it often because of the similar reasons you outlined like weight and size, but I do notice the difference in image quality whenever I do shoot 120. Really great portrait of the homeowner! Hoping to practice more with portraiture myself.

    • @LucyLumen
      @LucyLumen  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey, thanks for watching lovely and also sharing your thoughts on 120. It makes me feel better that you also find that weight and size put you off with medium format.
      I agree it is way sharper, but I am not really shooting film for sharpness and I sometimes find 120 to almost look digital in a way because its sooooo sharp. Not that there is anything wrong with that I just like 35mm I think.
      Look forward to seeing your portraiture journey!

    Great results! I run with a Mamyia m645, when I first got the camera I only had the prism finder and found it awkward to use and the one accessory that I got that helped is the deluxe L-Grip that made it so much easier to run with as it adds a handgrip with a trigger on the side to trip the shutter. When walking around and hand-held I prefer the waist level finder, it takes a bit to get used to that manner of composition but having run with TLRs in the past it was an easy transition.

    • @scottraymond4801

      I agree. I own the same setup and can’t imagine using it without the trigger grip. It feels so good and ergonomic. It really becomes an extension of you. The only time it comes off is for tripod work. A couple months ago I shot a wedding with this in my left hand and my digital in my right.

    I used one for weddings. Power winder makes it much heavier but so much more usable. I always loaded up with 220, so 30 per roll. Have photo diode type prism which when combined with the winder makes the camera completely to handle. Just far more ergonomic. Still have it along with four prime lenses.

    I love these photos! Especially the Astroturf layers and the flowering plant with the pipe behind. Awesome. I love bouncing around with what 35mm/126mm/120/4x5 and not necessarily needing to think in terms of how to use those formats "correctly" or "the right way" just how it feels good at the time. I understand the using formats and cameras to the best of their abilities, but it is fine to make pictures that you would make on 35mm on a 120 camera! It's all for fun, experimenting and seeing what works and branching out when the time comes to see what else a camera and film can do. Great video. I've never used a mamiya 645. Looks like a fun one.

      Hey lovely, thank you for this awesome comment and for watching the vid.
      I totally agree with you that just doing what feels good and having fun it the way to go. Things can get really technical and dry in photography and it ends up being so much about the gear and not about actually shooting!!
      I enjoyed the challenge and I learnt a lot. I loved that astroturf photo too, all the different greens. I preferred that photo to the portrait by the window which everyone seemed to love most but I prefer a more simpler brighter image. :)

      @@LucyLumen yeah! Fun. Serious. Serious fun. Ha, that is so important. I like that point of view and the fact we have so many options is so fortunate and amazing and I just want to be able to experiment and want others to experiment with whatever they can get their darn hands on. Why not!? Textures and colors and layers are so nice. People pictures are nice, but to me...no better or worse. I like a good picture of a well lit pile or a pillar out in front of a house with a flower crawling through a lattice as much if not more then a pic of a person.

    Great photos Lucy, medium format is a learning curve, it's not like shooting a roll of 35mm, and you won't fall in love with it easily but once you do.... I remember the first time shooting 120, I borrowed my brother's Rolleiflex Automat, thought the negativess looked amazing but I wasn't sold. Two years later borrowed the same Rollei Automat for the Summer and got hooked on 120 and TLRs, really bad. Two 3.5 Planar Rolleiflexes (an E and a F series), two Rolleicords and a Mamiya C220f (and you thought the Mamiya 645 was heavy).....

    My main workhorse is a Kiev 60 which is probably again twice the size and weight of that Mamiya. I love the portraits I get out of it, but carrying it around is painful - if I wasn't into portraits I'm sure I wouldn't use it. I agree that for you probably the Fujis make most sense, where price is the main issue, you could also try out an antique folder for fun but those are again quite a hassle to use and only shoot 8 frames - however, I accidently shot one of my all-time favourite pictures with one, and it's such a good feeling to have your favourite picture as a giant 6x9 negative. :)

      @@LucyLumen You have to practice more with medium format as the aspect ratio is different here. Also i would suggest a waist level prism finder if you like to shoot up towards buildings or other stuffs, it’ll give an another perspective. Find an RB67 and use it once , you will feel 645 way more lighter, haha. Medium format shines through every aspect but it shines more with portraits. So yup go ahead and shoot some portraits. Also, the 6x4,5 frame along with the Lomo 400 even reminded me of the shots you made with the Polaroid SX-70 (only sharper). Especially the shots with the white buildings contrasts with the blue sky. If you want to give the Mamiya a shot at redemption though, it might be worth it to load it up with portra 400 and shoot it at 200 during golden hour. That's when I get the most pleasing results with my Bronica.

      Completely agree, if you are not looking for a medium format look, then 35mm format is much better for general purposes. For me, a Bronica 645 was my gateway drug into other medium format cameras, my current favourite is the Pentax 67, and the Yashica 124G, but I have to want to use it for that medium format look; so they sit more often than my 35mm cameras do, but for a portrait session, that 120 is gold!

    I have a Bronica ETR which is not ideal for walking around and holding it in your hands, it is bulky and since these cameras were built solid, they are heavy. I much prefer the quality of the resolution the format compare to 35mm. I do not think you can compare the experience of shooting those two formats, they were not meant for the same purpose. 35mm was a light camera that you could Jane and Joe could carry around, 645 was for professional and a studio camera. What I love about my Bronica is the interchangeable back so it means I can change the back and use another film, it is nice when you black and white and colours. I carry my Bronica in a backpack, get to the location where I want to take my photos and when I am done put everything in the bag, too heavy to walk around holding it in my hands. You should try to get a strap for the camera, it will be easier to carry around.

    The portrait of the lady was great and loved how you pushed yourself. I was wondering why you didn’t do more vertical shots with the camera as that’s more your style?
    A 645 that shoots vertical while holding horizontal like the Bronica 645 or the Fuji would totally suite you. But really, if you don’t need the resolution of 645 and you shoot mostly f16 then 35mm it’s the way to go. Or maybe even half frame? You’d do amazing work with half frame

      I agree with you that it's not really necessary for me to shoot 120 as I mostly shoot full sun, f16, no depth of field etc.
      I love 35mm and all the cameras I shoot with currently they just stay out of the way and let me do my thing!

      About the camera, the Mamiya m645 can be difficult. I have some experience with it, and for photo walks some would say its not ideal. The shape and the weight are not to the liking of some.
      Having it on a strap and attaching an external hand grip help the camera be easier to handle. I love your shooting style and your equipment should help it, not hinder it. Don't give up on medium format just yet, I can think of at least one alternative.

    I don't have a dark room but wanna do contact printing or cyanotypes in this year on a small scale which makes at lest sense with medium format negatives. I own and use a folding camera (Agfa Isolette), a Kiew 60 (SLR) and a Rolleiflex 3.5 (TLR) and an Agfa Clack a a pinhole camera.

    Thanks, Lucy_Lumen. It's super rare to see a photographer walking the streets with a medium format, but they look so cool. You look like you were handling your Mamiya 645 just fine. Maybe you would have been more comfy with a neck strap.... but of course you have to change film rolls frequently. Which probably means one has to carry around a second film back. One would need to have a muse along I guess. In Old Montreal, many years ago I saw a tourist couple walking the back streets (Old Montreal is completely gentrified now, of course.) with a Hasselblad SWC Superwide, with a neck strap. I never saw that again. That was awesome. Thanks again for sharing your experience. Lovin the accent and your sound track.. (My mind noodles the idea of picking up one of the iterations of a Bronica.) One has to be really zoned in to walk the streets with a medium format though. Fun fun... thanks again.

    If you want a camera for a good price and medium format, that won't break your arm or your bank, you can't go past one of the folding cameras. A Zeiss Ikon Ikonta, Olympus 6, Mamiya 6 or 7 (not the newer ones, the older folding cameras), any Minox camera, etc, etc, would be a good choice. I have an old Soviet era Iskra (6x6) and an Olympus 6 that shoots both 645 and 6x6 format pics. 645 format would feel more familiar to you as it's very similar in ratio to the 3:2 of 35mm, but the negative is more than twice the size. Square format can take a bit of getting used to after shooting 35mm film, but you'll get the hang of it pretty quickly. You just need to be aware of how to frame your pics to take advantage of the format. Just takes practice!!. You can even get some cameras that will take 6x9 negatives, which is much the same as 35mm but much larger!!!
    With medium format and larger, you will slow down when taking your pics. It makes you think about your composition and what pics to take. Not like 35mm or digital where you can just rattle off frame after frame, hoping for the best. It'll help you become a better photographer and that'll influence your 35mm work as well.

      Thank you for these suggestions and advice Carl. A very kind viewer has sent a GA 645 to myself and a friend for us to borrow and use. I’ve heard it’s like a medium format point and shoot style which sounds perfect for me. I think with the rise in film prices it’s more economical to shoot 35mm film though. I love having 36 exposures, I like to get in a zone and shoot a whole roll of it rather than just 12-15 and then having to stop and re load. Maybe I am just lazy though…? I will do a video of me using the GA 645 so will be interesting to see.

    Hi Lucy. I have some medium format cameras but i don't shot them anymore. Why? Too heavy, too expansive, too uncomfortable, less environmentally friendly. Makes no fun, slows us down and let us miss the important shots. We should use cameras that suits to us and makes fun. The pressure to go for larger formats 4,5x6, 6x6, 6x7, 6x9, 9x12, 13x18, 18x24 and so on is in most cases a dead end. Larger formats makes only sense if you want to print photos in very big sizes. And this is rarely necessary. Many famous photographers shot 135 mm film and had exhibitions with large prints. And it worked.
    I often can't seen the advantage of medium format. There is often a disturbing background and unpleasant bokeh in the shots. Most Medium Format shooters use 80, 90 or 105 mm lenses. Not the best focal length for portraits. Should be 180 or 200 mm lenses. Their angle of view would be more pleasing.
    135mm film portraits with prime lenses 85, 100 or 105 mm at f1,8 or f2 appears more natural. The bokeh is normally better, the fore- and the background fit more. The bigger format isn't always better looking. It isn't all about sharpness and enlargement possibilities. It's about the general look, the impressions of the photos. In my opinion, 135mm film portraits often overall look better than those in medium format.
    Medium format shooters look here. 135mm portraits blow you away.

What I do not like is, your photos of buildings. They lack composition and you are mostly shooting them in stark daylight. There is nothing to show any sort of interests, like shadows or lines that draw you to the photo. And one other thing. I am not saying this to be mean. But, stop saying "yeah". Maybe you don’t like that though and that is fine, but I will not stop shooting the way I want to and switch to golden hour, low light, f stop 1.4 to get a blurry background so my photos look like everyone else’s because that is what is considered “good” photography.
