Bill did improve on the design in several areas. Stronger, more reliable, but heavier and bulkier. l get it, I'm an SAA guy too , I own several in different configurations and generations. Nothing feels or handles like a Colt. But I like to hunt with and I load 45lc, just for that. and the Colts cannot structurally handle the higher chamber pressures. Good shooting
That's a good take on it. If you want to bump up the loads a Ruger is the way to go. Thanks for watching! A 454 Casull is on my bucket list. Might need another life, getting old fast.
I enjoy my SBH Bisley in 454, but I load everything from 240gr. to 325 gas check, and those get a bit snappy..lol But I guess I'm a little different when it comes to my hunting handguns oh, I like a V notch rear sight and a brass bead front sight. And It's a shooter.
That’s because Ruger is a better made Handgun. I own the Ruger 45LC and the 44 Mag and their excellent for shooting hot loads in hunting. I carry the Ruger 1911 45acp most of my hunting rifles are Ruger although I own many other brands in rifle and in pistol including a few of the old Colts. I suppose the new vaquero is heavy for someone with a limp geriatric wrist or someone severely out of shape but it's lighter and more balanced than many firearms of the era SASS portrays or would have actually been used by historic profiles in the golden age of the gunfighters I think much like one encounters in other reenactment based stuff there's a level of snobbery and curmudgeonry around expensive toys that some won't come off of the real guns carried by men who lived and died by them were typically pretty worn and plain with the exception of grips or things they acquired through presentation their workhorse guns that they daily carried however were not safe queens that guy toting cap and ball 1851's is closer to reality than the Holywood peacemaker.

Built to run 44 mag. (The original Vaquero) then the New Vaquero was sized down. I have the original Bisley in 357 mag. I like the extra size. I also have Pietta and Uberti too. The Pietta comes close to the Colt. No safeties and a 4 click hammer.
@@bryanrmcnair01yeah I have had the 357 9mm convertible Blackhawk for years now I just picked up the 45 conversion Blackhawk Bisley edition, it’s a freaking phenomenal revolver! 👍🏻
To me, the selling points for Ruger are transfer bar safety and on the new vaquero, you can get them with 2 cylinders to shoot multiple cartridges. The .357 can also shoot .38spl and 9mm. The .45lc can also shoot .45acp. those are neat features that don't tie down your range toy to one cartidge at its current price.
The older 3 screw models I love but they changed them because ppl was afraid to put it on half cock loading and unloading instead of learning their gun and how to properly use it ......
I had the older Blackhawk in .357 and gave it to my brother. He took a file to it and made the trigger so light that he had a couple of accidental discharges. I understand the position on size and feel of the colt especially when shooting cowboy loads, i have a clone for that myself. The purpose behind Ruger beefing up the saa line is to handle heavy power magnum loads for a .44, they just so happen to offer the same model in .45colt without changing dimensions and therefore tooling to make it smaller.

Accurate, fun to shoot, easy to aim, well made. I like being able to swap out the cylinders so I can shoot anything from a CB cap to a .22 Mag with the same gun.
They're intended for hotter and heavier loads. If youre just into CAS and thats it then it doesn't really matter. However if you're carrying one as a woods gun, well you can get .45 Colt loaded hotter than .44 mag and a cheap repro wont hold up well to that.
the world fast draw association used Rugers because they were easier to be balanced, shaved, aluminum cylinder and aluminum barrel springs blocked and timing was changed after a complete rebuild designed to be slapped cocked with a straight up hammer ,out of a holster that was more out in front. Came equipped with chicken shields. with times that included reaction time and draw a fire at balloons or steel silhouettes with wax bullets. times of .244 of second was the world record. I personally was third in the northwest for top gun of year when i was 16. My dad was one of best at a technique called twisting. Nope not going to go there !
My friend i paid 500 for my pietta 2 years ago. The rugers were like 700 to 800
Uberti and Pietta have affordable saa clones and Pietta even has a saa that has the transfer bar safety for about half the cost of a Ruger saa
The 44mag Super Blackhawk is an awesome side arm for hunting. It’s heavy but you can get used to it.
Yes why didn't colt build a forty four magnum like that
The weight is a blessing on a 44 mag.
Sure. I've hunted with the same platform. Terrible for quick draw, which is what he is talking about.
Ah yes watching my wife shot a orange dangling from fishing string with the 44 super Redhawk at 40 yards to point out how I'm a horrible shot.
That's why a Ruger can handle a load with some juice behind it rather than just a light cowboy load, if a fellow was to need some juice.
In a 45 /44, agreed.
But now with the fairy duster 38 throwers, the '73 has a ton of steel on everything,so running hot isnt an issue.
If SASS ever got serious about the sub calibre fairies as no cowboy would pack one
We all have our preferences.
My preference for the Blackhawk is based on it being built like a tank. Feels safe and comfortable shooting stout loadings.
150 years. they must have done something right
Yep and it wasn't revolvers
Yeah the mini 14.
@@grizzlyblackpowder1960 I think they are talking about the Colt model of 1873,Ruger hasn't been in business for 150yrs,Ruger has been in business since 1949,Colt basically since 1831,I think.
Yeah if U consider Colts 150 year reign didn’t make it 150 years before they tucked tail and Traitors from within the company sold it to a Foreign owned company! Samuel Colt would roll Over in his grave if he knew Colt executives sold out the USA 🇺🇸 Colt to Foreigners! So give me a RUGER because they’re still American made and still have those bragging rights. Colt lost that respect and those bragging rights when they sold out to foreigners!
I have absolutely no respect for an iconic American company that does that.
I’m sure Samuel Colt would feel the same way if he was still alive!!!! #RUGERUSA🇺🇸
You should give us a tour of your favorite guns or all of them. Either way, I'll watch it.
I did on a long video. "SAA Race Gun Line Up" Thanks!
It's a personal choice. I prefer the Ruger because of the reasons why you named. I like the capability of carrying a sixth round safely while in the wild country.
"Ruger Super blackhawk 454 casull."
"Damn Harley, thats too much gun for ya!"
Remember when movies showcased new firearms?
Except that they didn't, they just had dorky writers who thought reciting the name of a firearm makes you cool.
Came for the gun. Stayed for the swag. This man might single handedly bring back old west style.
There’s no replacement for that thick displacement
I love the offended responses, LMAO! On the seventh day the Almighty made the Colt and when it was resurrected it came back down to earth as a Ruger😁👍
Hearing the sound of leather as it creaks across a mans buttox is something sorely missed in this society.
Been saying that same thing for decades, and the balance of the Colt is fantastic.
If you like a traitorous company Who sold out to foreigners and is no longer an American company. I’ll stick to a Ruger they’re still American owned an American made.
I enjoy my SBH Bisley in 454, but I load everything from 240gr. to 325 gas check, and those get a bit snappy..lol
But I guess I'm a little different when it comes to my hunting handguns oh, I like a V notch rear sight and a brass bead front sight. I traded for a 7 1/2" New Frontier in 45lc back in the early 90's that the previous owner had a gunsmith drill a hole through the blade ramp and insert a small brass rod/bead.. and did exceptionally good work.
But I’ve found over many decades of shooting and Hunting that Ruger has never failed me and they take all the torture you can throw at them within Load reasons and boundaries. Also Ruger is still American Owned and Made unlike Colt who became Greedy Traitors & sold to a foreign owned company. I’ll stick to to my American made Rugers over a Traitorous company like Colt.
#RugerUSA
@@TUCOtheratt the barrel bore diameter is not the proper size to shoot .22 MAGNUM ammunition accurately in the Ruger Single 6 rimfire revolver, because the bore diameter is .219" inches. To shoot .22 MAGNUM rimfire ammunition accurately the bore diameter must be .223" inches !
Man i love all of your videos, I've learned alot about guns through these videos
My Ruger Blackhawk revolvers look like an ordinance version of Benjamin Grim (the Incredible Thing.) The broad shouldered look of these Rugers says "IT'S CLOBBERIN' TIME!" right out loud. You are dead right about the balance, though. Get a 4" barrel to solve that.
Maybe you should just keep to the original 1873 Colt and the clones; Uberti does a good job in their 1873 cattlemen! & Ruger did improve on Colts original design!
Luv my Uberti...mine is actual one the few that first came out of New York
Built to run 44 mag. (The original Vaquero) then the New Vaquero was sized down. I have the original Bisley in 357 mag. I like the extra size. I also have Pietta and Uberti too. The Pietta comes close to the Colt. No safeties and a 4 click hammer.
I like the modern ones with the hammer block you can fully load them. And having the multiple caliber changeable cylinders is kick ass too! 👍🏻
Transfer bar is an awesome safety feature
Have two that has interchangeable cylinders...22/22mag then the 357 that shoots 38 and 9mm with other cylinder! Also have 44,45,and 41 supermag
@@bryanrmcnair01yeah I have had the 357 9mm convertible Blackhawk for years now I just picked up the 45 conversion Blackhawk Bisley edition, it’s a freaking phenomenal revolver! 👍🏻
Rugers double as a club if you are presented with a 7th target.
or if you need a boat anchor.
Ruger Bisley Vaquero. Finest single action .45 long Colt ever made.
Nuff said.
Oh yeah the bisley is a fine looking revolver
The older 3 screw models I love but they changed them because ppl was afraid to put it on half cock loading and unloading instead of learning their gun and how to properly use it ......
I had the older Blackhawk in .357 and gave it to my brother. He took a file to it and made the trigger so light that he had a couple of accidental discharges. I told him to send it in for the upgrade and they’d fix it for free. That was decades ago and he still has accidental discharges. Wish I still had that revolver. But now I have a Remington 1858 converted and I love that pistol.

However if you sport any single action its better than not

You can shoot some big boy rounds out of that Ruger that that Colt couldn't handle. I'm thinking Buffalo Bore, Double Tap, Underwood. It's a stronger gun 💪
Best of both worlds is a Colt SAA and a Ruger Blackhawk
New model Ruger vaqueros can't handle the same hot rounds the old vaquero can, an important thing to note.
I own one. While I don't think it's ugly, I won't argue that it is HEAVY. I think it's essentially bombproof but it's like slinging an anchor around.
Ruger makes all their handguns extra heavy, guess they figure they won’t blow up as easily
Yeah the few ruger revolvers I've shot are quite heavy. My gp100 is a tank of a gun
I use my Roger's when I'm building hot loads.
Sometime a little bit of thickness at base works in your favor - depends on where you're trying to discharge
That's what she said!
Honestly fair, you get used to a certain thing and when something ain’t it, that throws you off. Don’t make it bad, just ain’t what you’re used too.
Yep you’re right Ruger can’t do anything right… they don’t even know how to go into Bankruptcy. Colt is awesome at that and Ruger can’t build a Marlin right either, I mean the sights are in a straight line and the lack of gaps between the stock and receiver total amateurs😂
Colt went bankrupt not for the SAA, things happen. The reason that you and I speak English is because of the invention of the 1973 Army revolver specifically.
@@danziegner 1. 1973? 2. The British Empire is why I speak English 🇦🇺 3. 🇺🇸 exceptionalism much?

Ruger actually did improve it. Stronger (thicker frame/cylinder), more reliable (aka coil springs/more robust lock work), safer (transfer bar safety)….but Colts are sexy.
Man just teleported our of red dead redemption tf 😂
When the colt breaks down the Ruger keeps on spinning.
These are valid points for men like this that value speed and handling at said speed. These points are also why they are attractive to handloaders, there's a reason "ruger only" loads exist

Ruger added that little piece of metal so you can add six rounds without worrying about bumping your hammer and it goes off.
The original Vaquero was too heavy to really handle like a Colt SAA but the New Vaquero is much closer.
And Ruger unlike Colt is still an American company! Colt lost its credibility and respect of the American people when greedy executives from within sold to a foreign owned company. I’ll stick with my Rugers they’re still American owned and Made !!!!

@@CCRider5312 yeah, if I ever see a Chinese Winchester, I’m done.
I believe a gentleman named Elmer Keith proved that "the least amount of steel" wasn't quite enough in the Colt SAA.... the big kaboom.
I saw the results of that gun .it went from a 6shooter to a 3 shooter.
Them Colt SAAs really are the sexiest guns ever made, this gun will always be legendary.

I don't do vintage stuff and am not a single action expert by any means but I bought a River Single Six Convertible for rabbits, squirrels, and trapping. I've been very happy with it. Accurate, fun to shoot, easy to aim, well made. I like being able to swap out the cylinders so I can shoot anything from a CB cap to a .22 Mag with the same gun.
I own a Ruger 357 Blackhawk and I love it. Deadly accurate and dependable deer gun
Bro your outfit is soo cool 🔥
They're intended for hotter and heavier loads. If youre just into CAS and thats it then it doesn't really matter. However if you're carrying one as a woods gun, well you can get .45 Colt loaded hotter than .44 mag and a cheap repro wont hold up well to that.
They probably added thicker area for patten infringement. Also the gun is a little longer than the colt if you look hand guard to cylinder.
The word is patent. English is hard.
Ruger's revolvers have always been a little thicker because they use more gerth to make up for the lack of forging the steel like Smith and Colt do.
Sir I really like the shirt and the vest. Keeping the class of the 1880’s alive and well.
He speaks the truth. Even big bore magnum lover Elmer Kieth said Ruger single actions were like the old Dragoon black powder revolvers.
the world fast draw association used Rugers because they were easier to be balanced, shaved, aluminum cylinder and aluminum barrel springs blocked and timing was changed after a complete rebuild designed to be slapped cocked with a straight up hammer ,out of a holster that was more out in front. Came equipped with chicken shields. with times that included reaction time and draw a fire at balloons or steel silhouettes with wax bullets. times of .244 of second was the world record. I personally was third in the northwest for top gun of year when i was 16. My dad was one of best at a technique called twisting. I could talk all days about my fast draw days and traveling all of the northwest for events.
Love your stuff. Reminds me of how life was when I was younger. Raised old school style.
They look very similar. The feel matters as much as the price point. I'm shooting a Ruger and it hunts just fine. I bet the colt feels nice, I sure notice the top heaviness

I was glad to hear you mention old names I haven’t heard of in while Cimarron, Uberti, etc. do you mostly build your guns on those Italian base guns? Because back in the 80s those were always a bargain compared to Colts. Always great videos.
Italian only. Pietta is the best imo
When you drew that pistol, its familiar profile conjured my childhood full of all of those Westerns. That Colt is an iconic piece of true Americana.
The _New Vaquero_ is closer than the OG Vaquero, but still not the same.
“Uglier then a man’s ass” I’ve never heard that one and I’ll certainly be using it
I enjoy the fact that he explains the difference between both revolvers and how even though the Ruger is well-built, the Ruger being top heavy could potentially throw off the aim of someone who is not experienced.
