    Our drill instructors use to do this salute where they would put their arm out 90 degrees and swing it around and always get the salute perfect. And so we started doing it too and always got that perfect salute.

    Was prior service Air Force Medic 1964-1968, getting out as an E-4. and the Air Force saluted by going straight up and down the gig line.
    When I joined the Navy in 1969 I lost a pay grade to E-3 or HN and went straight to Corps School, without any Navy training.
    Picked up HM3 while I was with a Marine Battery on Okinawa in 1970, and was presented my Certificate by the Battery Commanding Officer (a Captain), while in formation with Marines who were picking up Corporal at the same time.
    When the Captain presented me with my Certificate and I saluted the way I learned in Air Force Basic, and when I was lowering my hand along the gig line I accidentally knocked all the other Certificates out of his hand.
    Was very embarrassed for a few minutes, but not for long because the senior E-4's of the Battery lined up into a gauntlet and the new E-4's went through to have our stripes and crows tacked on.

      It would have been hilarious if all the senior E-4s purposely saluted and knocked the papers down too just to make you feel better.

    This helps quite a bit. Just finished with training, but it was Officer Development School. We were never outside during colors out of formation and I didn't know what to do the other day when on base in civilian clothes during colors.
    I do have a question though. My first PDS is a joint command. Army salutes in PT's which is confusing as I don't know what rank they are and every once in a while they salute with their hand in line with their body. Is this an Army thing? I should probably just ask lol

  • @three6right
    @three6right Před 11 lety

    Yes, an individual only salutes when in uniform and covered. A plain clothed enlisted Sailor would not salute a uniformed officer (but would still render the appropriate greeting). An officer in plain clothes will not return the salute (but will return the greeting). I've never seen the fist over the heart for colors before. If you're in plain clothes for colors, it's appropriate to stand at attention.

    Someone explain to me why the Navy now needs a camouflage uniform? Also when I was in we never wore a cover indoors.

    • @wheelmanstan
      @wheelmanstan Před 5 lety

      The blue camo was a huge mistake. Doesn't work anywhere but in the water and when you're a man overboard then you damn sure don't need to blend in with the water. Should just wear the camo everyone else is wearing. The cover issue, from what I remember it's when reporting, entering bridge, inspection, ceremony, crossing hanger bay, certain times while on duty, while working. At least that's what I remember. Basically just never on mess decks or topside.

    • @yakabud0422

      I'm really late on this but yes you call him Chief (as in aye, Chief) but you don't salute him. You salute everything above Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy basically. So from Warrant Officer and Ensign at the bottom of the commissioned officers all the way up to Fleet Admiral you salute.
