    Perfection! As a kid I had the privalige to be hauled by a Western from Temple Meads to Keynsham towards the very end of the 52's time in service. They remain my all time favourite loco!!

      Adrian, We share the same views about the Westerns with superb design and sounds. My first recollection was in the early 60s when waiting for the usual King hauled London train at Wednesbury in the West Midlands when suddenly I was confronted with a strange sound coming from a sand coloured diesel locomotive. This was of course D1000 Western Enterprise. Happy days and thanks for your memories. Regards, John

    It’s really striking how years ago we had people who designed lovely things. They were actual people with vision, and flair. They designed machines that were very British in a distinctive way and they made us proud then and still today. I realise Westerns had German designed engines, but look at the elegant body and face. It is distinction and character.

      You summed up my thoughts entirely Newton, I even think Mr Churchward may have approved of the Westerns, the face, the lines the tumblehome.
      From an era when aesthetics still mattered.
      I can't help but think the designers of the class 70 should have looked at the Westerns for inspiration.
      Are the 70's not just an esthetic disgrace?
      Bye the way have you ever seen the DB version? Not a patch on the Westerns.

      Designed by an immigrant Russian Jew , Misha Black, from Baku, now in Azerbaijan. A brilliant designer who also styled the HST, ironically.

    Wonderful. I love the Westerns. I had the pleasure of 32 miles of driving at the controls of D1062 on the SVR in 2010 (with an accompanying crew of course) - those Maybach engines get the hairs up on the back of the neck when they're at full chat. Those last few miles up and over the crest of Eardintgon Bank (1:200) with 6 on and the power controller right back at the stop - experience of a lifetime. Loved it.

      @@GreatBritishRailways1 One of my regular activities back in the 1970s was to go to Paddington and stand next to the Travelling Post Office (TPO) train's loco, which was usually a Western, and wait for its departure. Actually standing next to the beast was impressive enough in itself; but then, when it revved up…

    Excuse my ignorance, but obviously the back up loco would add a significant amount of weight to the haul. Does it (either at the rear or when double header) use any power? Or are they somehow hydraulically connected so that when one opens up, the other can too?😊

    The later parts of the video make the locos look absolutely ridiculous, due to the fact they are being shown in wide screen. They were filmed in 4.3 aspect and should be shown in this way. It's a shame as the earlier parts are absolutely great.

    I've been wondering why do thr westerns always smoke so much its the same with the 42 and the 35 are they 2 stroke or is it just the nature of the turbos or what?

    • @GreatBritishRailways1
      @GreatBritishRailways1  Před 2 lety +3

      Steven, Thanks for watching and your comment. I am not a diesel engine expert so I cannot verify the following article about the issue you raised.
      Why is there black smoke from the engines when starting away?
      No, the engines are not sick! The turbo charger that compresses air and pumps it into the cylinders, along with the fuel, is driven (rotated) by the exhaust gases from the engine itself. When the engine takes power from idling the turbo blower is 'lagging' behind (turning slowly) and the fuel / air mixture is more in favour of fuel until the turbo charger speeds up and pumps the air in faster. Once the turbo charger is rotating faster the fuel / air mixture is corrected again and the exhaust emissions clear. This is called 'turbo lag'. You can clearly hear the turbo charger working hard on a Maybach, it's the whistling sound as the engine revs pick up.
      Hope this helps.
