The fact that he would've told them to not ride the cyclone if he was able to but he couldn't tell them. And I think why he told them to ride the cyclone was because he was owned by the fair and they used him as advertisement so he likely said "be sure to ride the cyclone" after every fortune he told.

Unfortunately I think it’s lost media because no matter how much I’ve looked it up there’s only a short fragment of it on CZcams.

  • @GuiSmith
    @GuiSmith Před rokem +51

A little background on the development of the show might shed some light on Tragic Fact, Waiting for the Drop, Fall Fair, and Uranium being the way they are.
So, back in 2008, Ride the Cyclone entered workshops and then previews a year or so later. Even until the off Broadway debut, and still after, the show’s writers were trying to just finish the show so they could work with motifs, melodies, choreography, and characters especially. In the very early days, there were more characters, though they’ve been pared down and merged. Noel got some stuff from another character, a romance dynamic got used for Mischa, and I can’t fully remember what was up with Ricky originally but he got a couple characters’ traits mushed together.
Long story short, parts in some songs were inconsistent because they were from before a change got made or alluded to dialogue that got cut or changed. It seems that Tragic Fact needed to be reworked a bit, so the creators temporarily shelved it and used some other lyrics lying around from the workshop days to create Fall Fair Suite and Waiting for the Drop, reusing a lot of lyrics and movements of the song. These ran for a while, the writers figured out what did and didn’t work with what they wanted, and then more or less remade Tragic Fact a final time with some new instrumental and better harmonies. There are some things that seem to be missing in one iteration that came back the next go around. Apparently it was really in flux, but since it’s the opener it’s hard to make that concise, set up details, and still work with character reveals later. The lyrics were tightened up, and around this time most of the characters got better dialogue treatments, Ricky’s song changed slightly, and Jane got her flying trick.
There have been more changes over time, though, despite the show having basically been done writing in 2016 and done composing fully by 2018. More dialogue changes have been made, too, a lot of them cuts or just changes for change’s sake. A few lines are better in my opinion, though many feel too ham-fisted or don’t pay off until way later. For example, in the newest script, Constance has a hilarious callback joke in regards to the improv duo she’s now in with Ocean. Ocean scripts them, but Constance changes the ending. The first instance of the improv feels less nice than the payoff, sadly, but it does lead into Ocean’s number with the right mindset. I’ve only read it, not seen it acted out, so I can only comment from afar. 🤷
All in all, the show’s gone through a lot over the years. I’m tempted to make a video on all the changes and controversies over the years.
Edit: I can’t believe I forgot Waiting for the Drop was a thing. Though when this order was explained to me, that song was left out. Hooray for misinformation!

Ooh, I'm glad I found this! I kept checking but just decided to check the community tab and yay! I saw this exact production way back in 2013 (Uranium/Tragic Fact) so I've been a RTC fan for a decade now. I'm so glad that it's become popular now. I know it's jarring to see a different cast than what you're used to, but the Canadian cast c. 2013 was great imho. though I love how it evolved since then.
The show had changed since I first saw it at the Citadel with this cast, (Ocean had a completely different song that had more of a gospel tone) but the core story was the same and Ricky was still mute and had crutches. If I remember correctly, in the actual show he wasn't singing along to Uranium (unless the newer production created a Mandela effect for me, but I don't think so because I remember wondering why he wasn't singing) and my theory is that for this promotion video (which included both this and Sugar Cloud) they had him sing along, maybe to avoid that minor spoiler? The person speaking at the end was the beginning of an interview with Kholby (the Noel we all know and love who as other commenters pointed out had been with the show since 2008) and the actor that played Ricky.
Since it was such a long time ago, I don't remember a lot of this production, but I feel glad that I got to see how it had evolved between it's run in Canada before gaining traction in the US. This production also used a puppet for Karnak, which I think is cool whereas later productions he's in a costume.
Anyway, your question about Karnak and "did he kill them?" I don't think so. He could only see their future and was programmed to be unable to say anything. My theory is that because of his settings he had no control about telling them to 'ride the cyclone' and this whole thing is because he felt guilty about it. But also I think that since he saw their futures, I think he also saw where they would be going in the afterlife. My theory is that he saw everyone but Ocean going to 'the Good Place' and he set up the whole the whole thing to give her a chance to redeem herself so she too could go to "the Good Place" and by doing that he would also be redeeming himself before he too, dies. That's why he kept changing the rules to mess with her because he couldn't say it outright but he knew that if she had more time on Earth she would've eventually learned to be less selfish and so he gave her the opportunity to make her last act in this 'in between' place a selfless one in order to save her soul. Like she says, "You knew all along that I couldn't vote for myself." Anyway, it's just my little theory.
My favourite opening is "Uranium Suite" on the album, but my one criticism of it is that it doesn't have Jane's riff on it like the others do. My second favourite is "Tragic Fact" because I like the eerie, haunted carnival instrument arrangement when it's switching between Uranium and Tragic Fact. I like that Uranium Suite on the album borrows from it though with some of the melodies, so I think that's why it's my favourite. It took the best parts of the previous songs (minus Jane's ahhhh ahhh's - which I miss) and combined them.
Fun (Tragic) Fact: Uranium City, Saskatchewan is basically a ghost town. They would've never had a Taco Bell or mall because it was such an extremely remote area - I think you could only get there by plane/seasonal ice roads. But like the lyrics in "Tragic Fact" say, people left when they closed the mines and that's why it's a more or less a ghost town now. I'm not sure why they picked Uranium, or if it was just a coincidence that there really was a Uranium, SK. Who knows?
Another fun (Tragic) fact (since you mentioned getting recommended videos about roller coaster disasters):This production was at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton, Alberta. Edmonton, until recently, used to be home of the worlds largest indoor triple-loop roller coaster called The Mindbender that was installed in 1985. In June of 1986 it derailed and 3 people were killed and 1 was severely injured despite being considered the safest roller coaster in the world at the time. IIRC, the problem was that the maintenance instructions were originally written in German and there was an error when translating to English. After that there had been no other accidents. It is now in the process of being dismantled though because they can no longer order new parts. It's a shame since it had been around almost 40 years and was actually a really fun ride.
I'm so happy you reacted to this, and all the RTC songs! I don't know if you'll get to see this, but sorry for the long comment, I was just really excited to see this! Thank you! :)

Okay let me clear a few things up. The video of tragic fact that you had watched was from the 2011-2015 production of ride the cyclone, Which means that not only was the cast different but a lot of the songs were different as well, also in the original production of ride the cyclone Ricky wasn’t actually disabled it wasn’t until the 2016 production where they changed the script. There was another disabled character named Hank in the original 2008 production, but he was eventually cut in 2010. Also the guy who plays Noel is STILL KOLBY. He was apart of ride the cyclone all the way from 2008-2019. That’s almost eleven years! Also I wanted to inform you of ocean’s original song that she sang from 2008-2015. Instead of singing what the world needs, ocean sang a gospel song called play to win. It’s a really cool song and It was just recently discovered. It would be cool if you listened to it and tried to figure out her technique just by how she sounds since there’s no real videos of her performing. It might be a fun challenge

Okay, so hello! This part of Tragic Fact is not my favorite. I had the same look on my face when I listened to it. HOWEVER, listening to the 2015 SoundCloud changed my mind. It is a wrap-up concert of the Canadian Tour and on it is a particular part of the song that is legitimately ear heaven. I highly suggest listening to the SoundCloud as it shows deleted songs too (I think you’ll particularly enjoy the really cool belts Taylor Louderman gets in Ocean’s deleted song “Play to Win”). It’s important to me that you know (my little fun fact) that RTC originated as a cabaret. Each character would perform a monologue, sing their final song, get absorbed by light, and that would be that. It later developed the plot of the children competing when it became a musical which is why it has so many different styles. Sorry this is so long, but I absolutely adore this musical and I love your reactions to it.
TLDR: Please listen to the SoundCloud, it’s so worth it to hear the full Tragic Fact.

PLEASE I need you to listen to Play to win (Oceans- old song that was lower and more gospel toned which is why this ocean's voice is so low) and Small things become big things in RTC the original cast :D

@@singwithAshley fast reply :0, yeah theyre hidden in the deepest parts of the internet as there werent any official recordings of the old cut songs from the start of ride the cyclone, such as why you couldnt find tragic fact with the usual cast, it was replaced by the time the usual cast came around (yes that was kholby playing noel, he played noel in all of the official productions :> ) U-R-A-N-I-U-M was also an intro song noel sounded amazing
      edit:
dhalia on youtube has a playlist of the old cut songs

I love tragic fact just for the pure depressing nature of it? Like it wraps around to Constance’s song very nicely
