The Best Offroad Trail In North America! Unstoppable Land Cruiser 80 Build Episode 8

- This Land Cruiser has proven to be a tank. It was the only build during the Onx Challenge that didn't need a welder during the week. The most powerful, the most well rounded... but is it the most reliable? I want to push it REALLY HARD through 4 days on Americas most legendary trails to find out. Anyone can trailer a rock crawler for a day trip. But what about living out of your rig on the trails for 4 days? Fixing other people? Bad Weather? Water crossings? Altitude? BEARS?!
I want to give you exactly what you asked for! A real test of these builds. I invited the other teams for this test but it was to close to UA for colt and I never heard back from Rudy. I hope to meet them on the trail with these trucks again sometime...

Your content and production quality have been so good for so long, that long time viewers are spoiled.
Consistently the best off road content in the game
Lol thanks man
28:24
Production quality of his videos are far better than channels much much larger than his. That is fact.
@@DirtLifestyle well.... if it was a ford,, it,d be stamped everywhere.. but, being gm, or lassale,, did they stamp there cars,, or too ashamed.??.. ford guy, obvoiusly..
The Videography and story telling of your videos is some of the finest in the off roader/builder content community, and I Really appreciate it.
Thank you 🙌. Taking the time to deliver such high praise means a lot. We are lucky to have folks like you watching the videos.
You have always maintained the position of "Take care of the trail, pack out more than you packed in, help out our brothers and sisters on the trail" mentality and you build videos are always detailed and make me feel like I could do that too! Which is why you are my Go-To, my favorite Off Roading channel. Keep up the good work brother!
Thank you very much 🙌
Your channel is so much better than OnX. Watched one video from the series on their channel and that was plenty for me. Keep up the fantastic work Nate!
Apparently the app is garbage too
Thank you for the huge compliment 🤘. The software is bad ass BTW. I used onx hunt 5 years before I started CZcams and Onx offroad ever since. Both are great
@carlsjr7975 The app rules. 3 years now using Onx its as important to a winch or shovel to me. I'd be lost without it.
I think Colt built a rig for UA, Rudy built what Rudy wanted to build, and you built an overland rig. All nice rigs. I would have liked to see better vids of the whole competition, it wasn't filmed very well.
I feel the same. It didn’t seem like a full fledged series like they wanted it to be over at ONX
Damn. How do I break the image of an overland rig with the cruiser??? I did everything I could with rock crawling styling, the parts, tires and I even took it on one of the hardest trails in the US. If after taking it on Fordyce, you still refer to it as an overlander... it sounds like I did all I could, lol. This is really important feedback. From a parts perspective, I feel like I picked the best truck of the three. But from an image perspective... I must have picked what will always be seen as an overlander. Thank you for the perspective 🙏
@@DirtLifestyle I believe you plan on doing it with more lift and tons. I understand you were working within the budget they gave you and saved lots of money by using what you had already. A lift would go a long ways i think. You've been to UA before, do you think the LC would do well the way it is? I'm not being a smart a$$ im genuinely asking. Will the "stock" components hold up to the challenge? How difficult would it be to source parts for it if something does break? These are things i was thinking about. UA seems like a harsh challenge for even a well built rig. These are my opinions of course and subject to scrutiny lol.
@@DirtLifestyle probably hard to get the 80S out of the overlander paradigm. It's what it's most used for (at least here in Latin America). And staying low and with that much body it still doesn't FEEL like a rock crawler even though you've proven it's 100% capable.
It's the stigma of what it is. I'd love to see you keep building what is there and not go with tons. See what it will do with what it has. You would have to cut the body up to get it to be called a crawler. Going tons is boring.
Keep it up Nate! Voted for you on on x everyday. You nailed it, most relatable build!
I really appreciate the support 🙏 can't thank you enough
Fellow landcruiser owner here. I have the same type of storage in my tailgate with a sleeping platform. Be careful keeping important recovery gear in there because if you slide backwards into a muddy ditch and can’t open the tailgate from the outside, your sleeping platform will prevent you from opening that from the inside too depending on if it reaches all the way to the tailgate. Sweet rig! Great video as always!
Taking nothing away from the competition in this series, yours was simply the best. It reminded me of an American version of what the Australians build, and they, in my opinion, know more about building tough go anywhere and live out of it rigs than anyone in the world. As well, the attention to detail this got to make it look “factory” really added to the final product.
This was my favorite build in the series by far, and it does seem more approachable for a novice like myself.
Thank you! That's exactly what I was trying to do 🤘
I’m excited to see you fall in love with the Land Cruiser. They’re built different -factory supercharger kits exist for these when you decide it needs more😉
Lol good to know
Nah it's a timing chain 2jz go turbo small for quick low rpm spool.
Colt's was the best rock crawler by far. He's also the best driver however. Yours is best at easy lines by far, and the most comfortable too. Nice build, was really fun to watch!
As an owner of the exact LX450, I was disappointed in the competition. I’m so glad you’re creating more content to show just how epic these old 80’s can be.
Nate, I voted for you over and over. Your synopsis about the average off-roading relating to your build is SPOT ON! Doing frame chops and swapping out IFS is not something us normal guys can even relate to or dream of attempting in our garages. Thank you so much for your incredible content!
For me, when it came to the ON X challenge, the other guys built rigs for specialised purposes, while you built a multi-purpose tool. I could never see myself driving the other rigs, while I want to use yours as a template for my own build. And that feels achievable! Thank you for taking that sort of thing into consideration, thank you for your wonderful content, and thank you for your great attitude and approach to everything you engage yourself in. Cheers from Australia!
Nate, this build is awesome! I think you should add some lift but keep the stock axles. Let it shine as it is! Have a vehicle that can break but if you drive right it doesn't.
This is an amazing video. Brings me back to being a kid riding in my dad's purple toyota truck on the Rubicon. Thanks for all you do Nate, it does not go unnoticed
I loved your build during the challenge, and I also loved the Bleepin boys build (it was 90% Colt).
I think your rig is the most relatable to the largest audience.
Most folks are going to want to build something they can drive everyday because they don't have a way to not to. The Bleepin boys built a rig to do a specific job, and do it well, and they succeeded. It's a more capable truck built in a similar fashion to yours (in a small space with limited tools), and it was built for a bit less money, but it's not going to win any prizes as a daily driver...where you're heavy luxury based SUV will win that battle every day.
I would love to build my Land Rover to the point where I could do this. Great conten!! 👍
Get to work! These trails are epic! I doubt you would look back and say... "did I make my land rover to capable?" 😂
Great video! Thanks for helping Richard out! We hiked back out there a few days later and managed to complete the repair on his Jeep and spot him back out to loon lake without any problems!
Your thoughts and feelings about the build challenge struck the nail on the head for me. I think your build is the most do-able and approachable and it was so much fun seeing you and Dave hand off the vehicle and throw your own spin at it. This series has been awesome to watch from your perspective.
24:54 I see an axial AX24 😂 I think I remember the day you came to our shop and bought that. Thanks for all the cruiser videos really keeping us inspired out here! PNW!
I have a bunch of these now! What a fun toy! What shop?
@@DirtLifestyle Tukwila HobbyTown!
You really know your wheeling and your vehicles. You have a seriously high credibility factor - probably more so than nearly anyone else on this platform. Thanks for doing projects like this and for creating good content around the adventures you take with what you build.
Thank you 🙌. That's a giant compliment
@@DirtLifestyle well deserved, you think outside the box!
@dirtlifestyle what under armor are you running in your 80? I have a 96 and am curious what you have to protect the drive line, transfer case and tranny. Thanks!
Great vid Nate! Thanks for filming all of the homies! 👊
It was a blast! What a trip 🙌
I love how you touched on not being bulletproof in water. Wish I would have watched way earlier but flooded my 4runner in July 2023. $22,000, new motor, and still issues coming up.
I was truly impressed with your truck build and how stock your truck is, the minimal upgrades
I’m excited to see you fall in love with the Land Cruiser.
Fantastic.
Your commentary at 30:00 was hilarious. I love the honesty man. Don't lose that.
Love the longer format videos. Thanks for sharing the snow on the islands.
Nate, these videos are Grammy Gold. Your skills are so underrated. Thank you for all you do.
Really stoked this came up on recommended. What a fun trip!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the comment 🤘
Your passion for this hobbie, quality of filmography, breakdown of build, building tips, professionalism and most of all family, freind, and stranger care is why i watch you sir. Thank you so much for sharing your lifestyle nate
I think you showed what is possible with a well built more capable all around vehicle. And I think it is awesome!! Also another great video!!
Nate 👍🇺🇸🇺🇸 haven’t been to the Rubicon trail for over 20 years, looks like you had fun times there.🇺🇸🇺🇸
One of my favorites for sure. Such a great place 🤘
@@DirtLifestyle yes 👍 also the Sierra trek trail one of my favorite places to go.👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
Awesome episode. Beautiful scenery. My Misses thinks you are he sweetest peach. Thanks
Nate, do some more vids with your son! love the enthusiasm he has.
Fordyce is definately bucket list goals, very nice coverage and stewardship bonus points 👍
NATE, as a universal practical budget build you absolutely hit the bar. The Lexus was my favorite by far out of all the builds because it was still very stock but so capable in a budget scenario. I think that bleeping jeep had an awesome build as well but when it comes do the facts, the best budget build for the average "jo" would have been the Lexus by far. Loved this video and 100% congrats on an awesome build. Can't wait to see what you have planned for the Lexus. And by the way, looking forward to the completion of the Samurai!!
You're such a good dude to help Richard out. I wouldn't expect anything less from you. The world needs more people like you. I know it' just comes natural to you. You're a good example of how we all should be though. Keep up the good work man!
Great video. The real trails. No designated lines. Nobody goes there trails, is what we do. Exactly what I see here. I had a toy solid axle everything flexy. 38.5 tires. Friends all had solid axle. I switched to suk on the next trip I made it 15 km farther then truck 2. Can’t wait to see your suk fly.
As an 80 owner who has had many other trucks prior. These things are wolves in sheep's clothing. Probably one of the most solid factory platforms you can start from, with the added bonus of stout reliability. Can't believe you squeezed 39s on her! Given the abuse you gave her it is a testament to the stock axles "punching above their weight" as you mentioned. Love the mind set of the build, putting time into some various trail accoutrements without having to rework the entire stock driveline was key!. Awesome video series, thanks much!
I voted for you brother, every single time and I’ve watched the other guys shows and I learn from them as well but hands down I have learned the most from you and I’ll always be watching.
❤👍 Thanks For The Ride !!
Good times it's what it's about
Absolutely!
Another fun watch. I was up in Mammoth over Labor Day weekend and packed for summer weather. I froze the whole weekend. I had more comfortable accommodations but less scenic.
Dirt lifestyle and Sarah-N-Tuned are two of my favorite channels on CZcams and I hope you never change your style.
As a fellow CZcamsr…. It was good to see you documenting two of my favorite local trails here in Northern California. Hopefully one day I’ll get the pleasure to finally meet and run a trail with you. Outstanding job with the video and thanks again for bringing us along. 🤙
The pouring rain we got last weekend was incredible and pleasant. Im glad you didn’t get too badly effected by it.
Love how you try to make your builds for the 'Every Man' builder.
Muddy Bears should be going to UA with that S10
Cool to see rigs, other than jeeps and buggies on the trail. Nate has low key joined the darkside with two Toyotas.
You DID build the most "repeatable" build for the average guy and FWIW you inspired me to consider one for a true overland build. You also got my votes. There was no loss here bro.👍👍
Loved the Cadillac Deep dive... big fan of the history of really anything.
Nate. Dude.... at the end of a weekend, the last thing I do before 'checking out' getting ready for work "Monday", is watching your videos. I can't thank you enough. Every single thing about your videos are absolute spot on. Your inspiration drives me to tweak on my truck. As far as the vote thing, man, I don't get it. I gave up when the other two teams had twice your votes. What the hell is up with that? I dunno, but at the end of the day, your content and your builds are what I need to see. Thank you man. It's a goal to shake your hand someday. To wheel with you would be amazing. I'll cook the tacos. Rock on.
Throwing this up on the big screen right now 👍🏻
IDE say tough as heck! Man those Toyotas are impressive! 😊
definitely a very rare occasion to have rain on Labor day
You have some of the best true overlanding videos out there
You’re spot on with your take away from the competition. While the boys at bleepin jeep built the best vehicle for the challenge I think you built the best all around vehicle especially when you consider all the highway miles on UA. for us guys who can’t afford a purpose built crawler that only sees rocks comfort and versatility are major factors of consideration when we are putting together our rigs.
Spoiled enough to live an hour from Fordyce and and hour and a half from the rubicon. Love the videos as always sir.
I really enjoyed the 80 series build.
for what it is worth. I liked your build the best. it is by far the most practical build. minus all the body work. i did watch all of the build series as they were released. your content is superb. I look forward to every video you release
Absolutely epic movie 🍿👍🏽 cheers from Siberia 🍻🍻
Ah Truckee. My old home. I recognize that Chevron. The one right by the Taco Bell :P Awesome trip you all had. I've never done the Rubicon but just picked up a 97 40th Anniversary 3x locked 80 that is pretty darned built. Makes me wanna do it next year!
Much love bruv!! Thanks for saving one of us old guys. Rather - I should say, thanks for saving another one of us old guys.
You got my vote, and I want one of those 97's.
Yes bears are very common around here, l live about 1 1/2 hours away and the bears are all over here, they are big too,😂😂
What an awesome trip. Definitely looking foward to the “JUST CHEESE IT” shirts lol 🤙✅💵🎥
Nate, you’re totally right about inspiring people! You inspired me to buy and work on an ‘89 Toyota pickup!
You always have good people with you. Keep up with the stewardship, it's worth it! My team does the same. :)
best off road channel
I just went through the noise you heard while being hung up. My 08 GMC done the same thing and it got to doing it all the time when I turned my wheel. I thought it was my steering rack and pinion.
I changed it, nope… my son found someone else’s making the same noise online and if I didn’t fix it myself, I wouldn’t have believed it but, it was my suspension needed tightening. It wasn’t loose but, I guess it was just enough to make a racket of such.
I had installed a 5” Rough Country lift many months prior and never went back and retightened everything. I ended up loosening everything a little bit then tightened it all back up and, to my amazement, it worked and haven’t heard a creak one!
Hope this helps.
Cars look like RC!
So cool to see that this Rig was able to go through fordyce! Awesome work, Its on the short list of trails to go through
Nate, for under $20k you built an amazing rig. And I believe with the right tools I could build the same rig. I think that Cole possibly has more fans and that S10 was way cool and even cheaper than what you spent. But IMHO the average joe wouldn't be able to duplicate that build, were yours is. Personally, all I'd need is $20k, a pipe bender, and someone with pipe bending knowledge to help with the cage. Nate, thanks for amazing content and showing everyone that a nice rig can be built on a tight budget. Great job!!!
Definitely like your rig better than the other OnX off road builds and it is practical for the everyday rig builder
So good mate from Australia
The 80e all ways wins
I started building after I watched your videos. It was the low buck diesel truck series. You’re a good teacher and have inspired me to take on many projects since
Awesome video again and seeing the wee Jeep out there with the old boy just giving it a go regardless of having no wheeling mates was ace.
Just a wee thought on the rain noise, it is something that I ran into with my first van conversions, a good way, well two, sound deadening the roof helps to dull it down, I can't recall on the build vids if you did this, I don't think so but other is to have a removable flat plate on that roof rack to take the noise if you are going to do a trip again with no gear up there. Instead of drilling into the bars then you could simplify it by using u-bolts. Just a thought but the whole video was great.....!!! Keep them coming.
Dude. What an adventure. Can't wait to get my cruiser out there!
Please, for the rest of us with 80s make a documented series when you do the ton and 3-link (or 4-link) swap. We would love to see it!
I voted for you. And I am building 2001 Suburban, mostly stock. Not so much for rock crawling as just trail riding/ overlanding.
Brother, every one of your videos inspires me and makes me feel like I can do what you are doing, you sure are succeeding, pay no attention to those saying anything differently, lead strong, love your family, love what you are doing.
You are winning.
That videography at 21:08.... very nice 👍👍(Borat voice)
I have wanted an 80 series since I experienced one back in 1996 while living in Western Australia for six months. I live in Great Britain where the off-road trails are shorter, less of them and much tighter; the consequence of which is the 4x4s are different and the off-road modification market is limited. The prices of the 80 series were and are beyond my financial limits, so I will live out my days never realising my dream of owning and enjoying an 80 series. I am enjoying an 80 series via you and this channel, thank you.
Love to see you and your truck at the king of elb
I am 47 seconds into this video, and cannot wait to watch the rest. Thank you for your continual creation of content
Such a badass Land Cruiser
One of your best videos! Really enjoyed this one! Definitely a rowdy time on the trails
Have always dreamed about going on the Rubicon since I was a kid.
I absolutely love your content. The videos just feel real. They aren't like a movie. Just good old-fashioned wheeling.
That Bleepin Jeep was cool and Rudy's Ram Charger was bananas. I'm with you though... You built the rig I would want. I would like to see you put off the one ton swap and just lift it properly but I know that's an unnecessary step as the challenge is over.
You are awesome. Keeping doing what you are doing. I really appreciate your videos!
Nate you are first on my list of sunday afternoon videos every week, the best videos out there my man!
Thank you so much for the kind praise 👏
LOVE the Rubicon.
Great content, the your filming and cinematic work is gotten so good. Also, love the lost and loose rigs, been following for a long time.
What an awesome video, well done and different from most off-road vids. Was a pleasure to watch! (From a Jeep guy)
You nailed it!
Awesome trail footage. Loved all 47 minutes of it.
A group of 6 of us from the Seattle area did those same trails just 2 weeks before you. Great trails for sure!
Great content Nate. Thanks for being the positive influence that you are
Dang! What an awesome set of rigs and a most amazing campsite! This one was one of my favorites
