So many great things in this speech: it almost makes me optimistic 🙂. Why can't the Tories see how wonderful it would be to adopt this kind of outlook? How popular it would make them (even if they don't "get it")? You can have conversations about these types of issues with all kinds of people (and I do) and find huge swathes of common territory and agreement: but do the mainstream tories get it? It doesn't feel like they do, which is a national tragedy and disgrace.

Short sighted decisions that don't consider externalities are a real killer. She won't get the attention or praise of the other speakers because she is talking of the earth and not the thunder, but she's laying out key factors that politicians should be focused on. It's all so self-evident, too.
Personally I'm 28 and have been through the University system and do have a well paying job (£70k pa at my current grade) but the positive thoughts of starting a family are like I'm just dreaming a Disney dream. The grandeur that was sold to my generation has proven to be so off it's shocking.

Falling birth rates are "the one overarching threat to British conservatism and indeed the whole of western society".
If this really is true then there is one sure fire solution.
Pay people to get married and have big families and give them a free house as an incentive.
Be selective - not everyone is cut out to raise children - but most people are.
Not only will marriage and parenthood become a high status career but one that pays generously.
Be aware though that there is a high chance that AI and automation may well destroy huge numbers of jobs in the near future.
And there is no guarantee that there will be enough new jobs to replace them.
It may well be that in future getting married and raising a large family will be the most popular 'career' choice in an ever dwindling jobs market.

Can’t agree, if you want pigs to breed, take them out of their comfy sty and give them a rougher outdoor domain. Life’s to comfy, the things we complain about are nothing like they were when families were large. There’s also the problem of sex drive. Sperm count has apparently fallen and with it possibly sex drive. Also women have been lied to concerning “having a career”. You may rise to be VP with special responsibility for paper clips. Having your death bed surrounded by paper clips rather than your children and grandchildren is simply not the same. Five years after leaving your life long career you’ll be all but forgotten. Your children if properly and lovingly brought up will remember you with affection all of their life’s.

I agree with most of what she said about family values, and we need to value family and make having kids attractive again. However, I can't agree with her on patriotism. Countries like Japan, Korea, and China are all non-immigrational countries, and all have a strong culture of loving their nation, yet, their birth rate is only around 1%, Korea only 0.84%, which is far less than today's Britain. Immigration poses an identity threat that nobody likes, but it is not the cause nor solution to this low birth rate and low economic growth problem. Vocational training and technical education has been working 50 years ago, but is not going to work in the era where AI and robots are starting to take away both skilled worker and professional jobs. A new industrial revolution is forming, and that is waiting for all of us.

She is absolutely right with her core point that social and economic conservatism are not separable.
But sadly not close enough to understand how state policies like entitlement spending ARE the reason the family unit is loosing importance in the modern West. So she demands more government policies which seem like they would remedy the situation but they won't ever be able to.
    Still, quite a powerful speech.

Do you cause this woman to be determined by internal economic conditions?
    I do.
Do you cause this man to be determined by external economic conditions?

Will you both remain man and wife until such time as a new more optimal equilibrium is found?

    • @kingofmaglos3
      @kingofmaglos3 Před rokem +15

It makes complete sense. People who want to have kids are choosing not to, often only because they can't afford housing, so you would want to build more houses to reduce the cost of housing making it affordable for people to have children again.

    • @jackengland7117

@@jackengland7117 Yes mass immigration is one reason but you also need to build more houses as you don't have the effects of the falling birth rate until its "too late" since it literally takes time for people to grow up and move into their own houses or die and move out of their current ones

... I guarantee you that fertility rates have less to do with new child birth rates than the fact people are simply barely able to live. 1 thing that has to be fixed in order to actually increase it is actually being able to afford to live in a house. Housing prices need to realistically be the same as what they were 30 years ago for people to feel comfortable enough to start a family.
I'm almost 40 and the majority of the people my and younger don't have kids and the main reason is they simply can't afford them.
Housing and renting prices need to come down, dramatically. That's the only way you're gonna see a turn for the better for young families.
