Mario Paint is one of very few titles on the Super Nintendo that works with the SNES mouse, and it was weird going back and trying it present day. Does it hold up well, or really show its age? #shorts
Mario Paint comes from an era, where "playing on the computer" meant doodling on MS Paint. I don't know how much time I spend just paintin random stuff.
Ummm.... That WOULD be the case if Windows were popular back then. BUT it wasn't. In 92 most well-to do families didn't have a computer and the most access kids had to computers were at school, typically Macs with a single button mouse. So correction, playing on a computer typically meant Kid Pix or Oregon Trail or if you were SMART, Hyperstudio.
@@PaperMario64 You should be able to get just as good performance out of an optical gaming mouse, you tend to be able to fine-tune the sensitivity. The true horrible mouse is the thumb-ball static mouse imo
It may be one of the weirdest Mario titles for the SNES, but it is one of the most nostalgic. I remember always messing up my brother's custom stamps when I was younger, fun times. XD
My two cousins and I, would take turns making hilarious porno using the animation function. Some of the hardest laughs I've ever had in my life as a kid.
I have fond memories playing around with this "game" as a kid. I'd spend hours just doodling stuff or coloring the images preloaded into the game. There was also a minigame where you swatted flies. Very weird now that I reflect on it lol
And was even more harder in the first warioware game. Yes warioware has a the actual Mario paint flyswatter game in the first warioware game and it's exactly like original mini game
Lots was left out. There is mini games as well as an animation studio. As well as being able to create your own music! Had so much fun with this when I was a kid
The real killer for that poor SNES mouse was that awful board they supplied as a "mouse pad". I put an actual foam mouse pad on it back when I was 10 and it worked wonderfully.
I remember having this game when I was a kid but it was only the cartridge. I remember calling this retro game store in my area every week to see if they got a snes mouse yet, still never got to experience this gem 💔
the best part of Mario paint was the mini game where you squished flies. If you haven't played it, your missing out on one of the unique experience offered in that generation. It also had an icon maker. So you could create your own Mario styled icons.
Fun fact: On the Super Famicom they later released Mario Paint that can be used with your regular controller so you didn't have to use a mouse. But it was only released in the Japanese market. They also released Mario Artist: Paint Studio for the N64 Disk Drive which was a sequel to Mario Paint but it was only released in Japan.
I’ve been wanting this game to get the reboot treatment since highschool in 2005! It’s so nostalgic, he didn’t go over the rest of it, there’s so much to do. The harder levels of the fly game made me anxious as a kid!
Hell, old laser mice weren’t much better. Modern optical mice work on just about any surface, but I remember hating my first laser mouse because it would only work on very specific mousepads.
I hooked up a drawing tablet to it (in mouse mode) through emulation and surprisingly it’s a really fun little game. Especially with that whack a -mole- bug minigame lol Other than that it’s my go-to “no thoughts head empty” type of drawing software now lol. Just draw the first thing you thought of and stamp stickers on it lmao (while listening to that music you hear in playlists of the same name all the time)
Trackball mice arent really that bad as people make them out to be, they just gotta be cleaned more often. Their one of my favorite types of mice and ive never had a problem with them.
I feel old still remembering using a mouse with a ball in it lol. I would take the ball out and play around with it, and I remember not wanting to switch to lazer when it came out because I felt the ball was better. 😂
I remember in the early days of CZcams everyone making remixes of popular songs in Mario paint. Someone had a really good version of Ms. Jackson done in it that I still have downloaded and listen to quite often.
mario paint was one of my favorite snes games as a kid in the 90's - loved the music maker and the fly swatting game. Was definately a different breed, still is... classic
I found this while scrolling through old games on eBay and I had to look it up. Thanks for the breakdown. It kind of blew my mind that there was a mouse control game on the SNES. I had no idea!
You forgot to mention the Gnat Attack minigame, the coloring books, making custom stamps, and the animation studio, where you can animate your pictures. I always drew some kind of phallic and animated it reaching climax.
I loved Mario paint back then. Played with my older brother and little sister. He would spend most of his time making music. Have a vivid memory of him recreating some song from megaman 2 in it. Was very impressive to me at the time and it’s funny looking back on it now because to this day he spends most of his time composing music nowadays too lol
I had the feeling, that the mouse was not very reliable and that wore down very quickly. But you brought back the memory of cleaning the mice in the library of the University. That was bevor 2012. God I am old.
Hyperkin makes a laser mouse now. Not only does it bring the experience into the 21st century, but it gives all of those old MP cartridges that got separated from their mice a new lease on life. There were actually quite a few games that used the mouse, it’s just that most of them never left Japan, most notably “Mario and Wario”. That game alone makes investing in a mouse worthwhile.
Oh, we still have this, mouse and all. I remember a few years back when my parents showed it to me for the first time and it was wild playing a bunch of old SNES and SN games. And an old atari
Hyperkin has a laser SNES mouse. Fun fact: In North America the mouse was only available in the big-box bundle with _Mario Paint,_ but in Japan it was available in a _Mario Paint_ bundle, a mouse-only big-box, and a bundle with the fun Japanese exclusive _Mario & Wario._ All three are the same big box and special mouse bundle tray insert with different art. _Mario Paint_ doesn't seem to have ever been sold separately, but was made available on Satellaview late in the console's life. _Mario & Wario_ was available separately, despite being a mouse-only title, presumably for people who'd already gotten one of the other two mouse boxes. What I don't understand though is why the Japanese mouse has purple buttons. Purple isn't anywhere in the Super Famicom's design language, and on the Japanese Super Scope, the fire and pause buttons are red and light gray instead of the North American version's purple and lavender...with six colors to choose from (Red, green, blue, yellow, and two shades of gray.) you'd think they would have done similar with the Super Famicom mouse. 🤔
My childhood, I played that all the time, it was actually so much fun! Loved the flies game, creating tunes 🎶 with flowers and stars and mushrooms xD and making pixel Art 👌🏻♥️
Mario Paint was the first daw Inwas exposed to. I would argue it is my most sought after game. Possibly the best learning tool I have ever seen for digital audio.
Kids these days will never know what it was like when you needed a new mouse ball and had to boil an egg to just the right level of firmness to replace the previous one. You used the yolk from a hard boiled egg.
I remember when optical mice weren’t a thing - every mouse had that ball controls. Every now and then you would notice your mouse not moving properly anymore, then you would open up the lower end, clean up the wheels and suddenly you it felt incredibly smooth again. No idea if this was placebo tbh😂
Try emulating the game, genuinely works great.
Shhhhh you can't let nintendo know

Funny how the most iconic part of Mario paint isn't the drawing, but the music creator.
Don't forget the mini game with the flyes.
Lol yeah

Good to know, the horror game Clocktower on SNES has a fan patch for SNES mouse support.
Trackballs aren't bad, it's the fact they get filled with dustballs which you have to remove every once in a while.
Fun Fact: Mario Paint came with its own little mouse dirt scraper/cleaning tool.
