Learning Pen Spinning with No Experience (thumb around)

  • This week I learned the most basic pen spinning trick, the thumb around. Learning how to spin a pen around my thumb sounded easy at the time, but took me WAAAAY longer than expected. That said, through a couple tips and tricks I share in this video, I was eventually able to land it consistently (and I'm sure you could do it quicker).
Did I master the thumb around in the three days I filmed this? Absolutely not...but I did get a solid introduction into the world of pen spinning and a super fun "at the desk" hobby.
    FEELS GREAT.

Nice video! I've been penspinning since 2008. it's was so fun to see your progress. Reminded my struggles with this trick.
The main mistake you doing here is moving your thumb and whole wrist. It's should be completely still. You need to push it only with index finger. And keep you hand parralel to the floor. Your is turned inside quite often.
You should also learn tricks: sonic and finger pass.
    Good luck!

So I'm one of those pen spinning guys
    Here is my tips:
Don't move your thumb, keep it straight, Stephen was moving his thumb a lot and this prevent the pen from spinning
Your index finger must be on the start of the pen and the middle finger on the middle of the pen, so the weight make the pen spin a lot easier
    Use heavier and longer pens
    (bad english sorry)

I learned this trick in math last year. It's so much fun lol. I've only learned 1 trick after that, so I'm getting stoked to learn so more.
This is the second skill toy video you've released that I actually play lol. Yoyo and pen spin ftw 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
(Imo the thumb around is similar to a snapping motion, so it might be easier to build off that.)

So... All you have to do is keep a fair distance between thumb and the middle finger when you have them crossed... Then use index finger like a some sort of of resistance...like a propeller... So when you make the move to snap your fingers the index should be the one resisting or maybe stopping the pen from moving. Thumb should be placed right where you can balance the pen in one finger. So if you do all that when you snap your fingers and the force of the snap is stronger than your grip from the index finger it will act like a propeller forcing the pen to go around your thumb. So keep the thumb straight. When you learn that round movement of the pen you will notice that even though the pen goes all the way around the thumb it falls afterwards. Thats because it hits to your index finger and not the middle finger. First step is done. Now just try to imagine your hand position after the snap. Keep index finger OPEN (clearing the path for the pen to land on the middle finger) after the snap and close it immediately after pen goes around thumb bringing it close to your middle finger. That way the pen will land on the middle finger and your index will catch it as soon as it lands there. If you do that after practice you will get better and better. I did my best to explain it as simple as i could hope it helps!!
EDID: I forgot to mention. When you start practicing you will use less force because... well because everyone does at baby steps in this trick. So you will use your whole hand rotation to keep the force right. When you want to be more stable try to stop using your hands rotation and find the perfect force on the snap. that way thumb will be much more stable and the trick is gonna feel a lot of easier.

Dude. This shit is hard, but I can see why it's harder for you to catch it. You are moving your thumb down, and it messes with the trajectory. You have to keep the thumb completely still, without bending down, without moving at all. It's an axis for the pen to follow around, if it moves while de pen follows, the pen goes flying around some random direction. Of course practice is the most important part, but if you practice right, you'll get there sooner. With enough practice you'll be able to control the momentum enough to spin it around your thumb without even using the middle finger to propel it, just with a movement of the wrist. Then you'll be able to do it with every sort of shit, even bananas. And you already figured out something essential: the heavier, the easier. If you can get a drum stick to practice, it will be way easier to figure out the movements. Btw, in my opinion, both the finger pass and the charge movements are easier than the thumb around, give those a try too.

You should try an other pen, well balanced if possible. And I think you really should watch videos about it, best thing to do for that skill. Pen spinning is 90% of try hard and keep doing it till your fingers get the movement ; also, when you have mastered a trick, try to learn a new one quickly as your fingers don't get too much use to that precise movement and forbid you to try smthg else.

At around 5:50 you can see how you lower your thumb mid spin. I think thats the main problem you're having, to do this trick correctly you shouldn't lower your thumb. If you look at the tutorial video you link to in the description, that guy doesn't move his thumb at all.

Sorry about my English. I don't think you're doing the trick right. Why are you moving your thumb? Try to make a movement as if you are clicking your middle finger. And do a flip around your thumb. I learned this trick with a user of the channel "Pen Stock" there is a good explanation for performing this trick and others. I believe that you will succeed.

    • @stephenrobinson52

Ya! I'm realizing that now, thanks for the tip. The thumb movement is just a bad habit that formed while learning the skill. I didn't even notice that I was doing it until I edited this video. Do you have a specific tutorial you'd suggest folks checkout?

@@stephenrobinson52 There are a lot of good tutorials on the Internet. But almost everyone forgets the movement of the thumb, and this is the most difficult part of the trick (holding it still). I had a problem with that, too. It took me two days to realize that. Maybe this video will help someone(sorry, I don't know other youtubers who speak English) czcams.com/video/ad9HpOXeBTc/video.html
