- In 1991, Star Wars Dark Empire was released as a comic series by Dark Horse, written by Tom Veitch and drawn by Cam Kennedy. Cover art was done by the wonderful Dave Dorman. An audiodrama for the comic was released in 1994 by Time Warner and Highbridge Audio. This Definitive Edition edit combines the two, along with adding John William's score + other Star Wars music. Enjoy!
This was made for Dark Empire's 20th anniversary.

An understatement to say that Disney missed the mark. Big Time.
Edit : Yeah, 25 mins in... I wish the world was blessed with this as the 7th movie. It would've been tough with the actors being older, but I'm sure they could've figured something out. The Characters are exactly how they should be. This is Star Wars
Could've easily moved the plot 30 years into the future instead of 5, and you could've easily added characters like Finn and Rey to handle the action the retirement age rebels may not be volunteering for at the same rate they used to. Yeah, Star Wars is dead. It was mismanaged by incompetent, bumbling arrogant fools. And it hurts.
@@mr_rebornKyle ren is a good character, the Force Dyad is really cool concept and Rey might be a better character in her new movies that are planned.
I definitely wish Kylo REN wasn’t dead…maybe he isn’t, or maybe he is and Ben Solo lives again, free of the Force Dyad that turned him to the Dark
@@DriveLaken 😂 good joke. The only thing that was close was Kylo Ren COULD have been a good character. The rest was nonsense.

Exactly. True Star Wars is anything pre-Disney but here's hoping Disney comes up with something cool for once that isn't rehashed a million times from another franchise like Marvel or some crap.

Better than prequels as well tbh. Also the new Disney books are well written
The funny thing is how this is considered one of the more divisive stories. Like... this is the low tier legends writing. Now compare it to the high tier writing of the Disney Canon
I actually remember this comic as a kid and thought it was bad… but considering what Disney has done these are awesome
Then it must be the voice acting that I find so bad.
You know despite the Emperor coming back being somewhat a disappointment, for this type of story I don't think it's that terrible, nor do I think it completely destroys Anakin's sacrifice. First off, Luke didn't join Palpatine because he became corrupted, he only did it to figure out a way to destroy the Emperor's Cloning Plan and tear down everything from the inside. While he does do some really stupid things and it caused all of his friends to feel betrayed, he eventually gains their trust again. Plus he retains all of his growth from ROTJ, if he didn't then I think this story definitely would deserve all of the hate it gets. There's also the Emperor himself. Remember this was written 8 years before Phantom Menace was filmed and published in the theaters, so nobody else knew where the franchise was heading! I honestly think Tom had very little to go off of the Emperor because he didn't know his whole background. Just because the Emperor was dead and the Second Death Star was destroyed, didn't mean peace was fully brought to order since there are still some Imperial supporters who refuse the New Republic's rules! Now that the Prequels are out, we can apply all the info from the Force from there, the Clone Wars and the KOTOR games, it does add some semblance into how the Emperor could come back. He did technically died as his original body was destroyed from the Death Star explosion, but before then, who's to say he tried some ritual that allowed his essence to live on? Plus it also helps that if he lost his new weapons, and his cloning facility got destroyed, Palpatine is essentially on the losing end, especially when the Second volume shows that his 'Perfect' Body was beginning to deteriorate. Plus they also play around with the concept from EP6 of Leia becoming a Jedi. When her and Luke confronted the Emperor in this arc, both with Lightsabers in hand, that to me was amazing! This is why I feel like Anakin's sacrifice wasn't a waste, it wasn't just his destiny to destroy the Emperor, it was also to pass on the torch of bringing balance to the Force through his Children and their next generation!
Again, I know some people don't like this Arc and they probably won't accept what I'm saying, which is fine. If you still don't like it, then that's okay, it's your opinion. But I would like to at least see why others do without the whole notion of Palpatine coming back, because again, this was written in 1991, 8 years prior to EP1! Also if I'm gonna be frank, I personally think this whole thing was a better Palpatine coming back story than the **** done in Rise of Skywalker, where Disney and crew didn't understand the notion Dark Empire had beside the main highlight of it. Plus at least with Dark Empire, with it taking 6 years instead 20-30 to reveal Palpatine's return. Plus this comic seems to have been written with passion and process unlike the Garbage fest that was the Sequel Trilogy (specifically Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker)!
It's just too bad that Lucas didn't believe in his story enough to do the prequels from 1987 to 1993, and if he chose to make the 'sequel films', he could have done episodes 7 to 9 from 1997 to 2003, and be the one who made the entire series. Instead, he decides to put the Star Wars story aside, and for what? Howard The Duck? However, despite having Lucas abandon his story, others took up that story through novels like 'Heir To The Empire' (1992) and through Dark Horse Comics 'Dark Empire' (also 1992). Is it really surprising that Lucas used concepts from these novels and comics to make the prequels. Disney is just another example of the many fans that wanted to make those amazing stories and bring them to into canon, like Grand Admiral Thrawn.
While I didn't end up disliking the rise of Skywalker I am a bit disappointed they didn't take from dark empire for story's, as when I heard Palestine was coming back I got excited hoping they were gonna mimic dark empire! This was the first star wars comic I read, so it holds a special place to me.
This is the story we deserved on the silver screen, not the one we got, You are not alone.
From a logical standpoint this makes sense because it was the Father's destiny to destroy the Sith and his off-springs duty to prevent its return.
Technically to bring balance to the force

Been listening to this since it was on cassette in 90s. This is... this is so well balanced. It's terrific, and really injects more life into what is a usually stiff but enjoyable performance. You've smoothed that out.
Your selections were often surprising and spot on. Well done; the addition of more expansive score material genuinely enhances the drama.
The Dark Side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural

THIS VOICE ACTING IS *AWESOME!*
Damn that final line about Leia's third son going to be a great Jedi hurts knowing his fate 🥲 atleast Anakin Solo gets a heroic death as a great Jedi, can't say the same for Jacen 😔
Every time I reread Star by Star it hurts knowing what’s going to happen. By the way, you should edit the comment just in case someone gets spoiled

Here's (almost) everything that was taken from Dark Empire and used in the new Disney Star Wars movies. List will not mention anything from Dark Empire 2 and 3. If you have any more then comment below!
1. Palpatine returning via cloning
2. Secret world of the Sith: Byss and Exogol
3. Force Projection
4. Invincible planet destroying weapons, ultimately destroyed by a droid: R2 and World Devestators, BB8 and
Xyston-class Star Destroyers
5. Hyperspacing out of the planet's atmosphere (happened in Rogue One)
6. "Looks like half the galaxy's arrived Lando" Mirroring Lando bringing in half the galaxy in Episode IX
7. Maz Kanata is basically Vima Da Boda (Handing a lightsaber to the hero)
8. The Emperor's force possession
9. Tobias Beckett from Solo is basically Mako
10. The return of the Empire (though that was bound to happen in a sequel trilogy)
11. The New Republic loses their capitol: Courscant and Hosnian Prime
12. Instead of the Empire fleeing to the unknown regions, they flee to the galactic core
13. The Emperor is destroyed by the heroes redirecting his dark side power back towards him.
14. A Skywalker is seduced by The Emperor and is redeemed in the end
15. Having to go on a mini-adventure in order to access the Sith world
16. Lightsaber giving visions.
17. The Eclipse Star Destroyer (cheating a bit since it was only used in the cancelled Episode IX: Duel of the Fates)
Badass.
handing a lightsaber to the hero doesn't make them the same character. if that's the case, ben kenobi is also vima. mako is also not like beckett at all. one is a smuggler, the other works for a crime syndicate as a thief. Mako lives and is from correlia and is only stated to be an old friend of han. Beckett is far more influential to han during his formative years, far less of a friend, and actively becomes his enemy toward the end of the movie. Mako does none of these and is nothing more than an empty side character.
also the following numbers on your list 4, 14, 15 and 2 are not specific to dark empire and are mostly recycled ideas from the movies or are tropes that you can find in various star wars media. 12 and 6 are also not points of note, because even if they were not included in either stories, it would have changed nothing.

Think the reason this version of Palpatine being a clone works is because he was up against Luke. Luke and Vader’s greatest enemy coming back is a lot heavier than Rey fighting her supposed grandfather that we had no clue about. It just feels random and forced.
Does anybody besides me notice that even though this came out years before episode 3, Luke Skywalker seemingly did the impossible and landed a crippled cruiser on the surface of coruscant just like his father anakin did during the clone wars? So kriffing awesome!
(Be aware the following was based on false info, but is a cool idea if you consider you never see the temple again after the force unleashed)
Another thing, the imperial palace is actually the repurposed jedi temple,* which also explains why the dark side is so strong there when Luke is exploring it, aside from the fact that the emperor used to be there. That building is literally haunted.
*actually not, they were two different buildings in the expanded universe
Imperial Palace and Jedi temple are two different buildings in the Legends timeline where this takes place. But I like your earlier explanation
@@DIEGhostfish Ah yeah your right I looked it up I thought that was the legends explanation that it was built over the jedi temple much later, which is why you never see it again after the force unleashed. But I guess not. Still it's a cool headcanon idea. Still hard to find the right Canon information sometimes now that Disney has screwed up the expanded universe
Yea imo there's enough open-ended in the timeline that a lot of old EU and disney canon can b reconciled for headcanon (at least across like 1 or 2 stories lmao), so the imperial palace being the old jedi temple could work FOR THIS STORY if u want that in ur headcanon.

Yes. It was most definitely the first time he died. Anakin’s destiny, the chosen one’s destiny, was to destroy the Sith Order and return the force to balance. Which he did; and his offspring’s destiny to prevent their return, prevent them rising again. Which by and large, and in the end, they did.
He very well could have died before, probably only once or twice during the reign of the empire though. The old sith emperor vitiate used this ability to survive for a long time.

Episode 8 we deserved... (Ep 7 is Heir of the Empire)
I’d say the stuff with the Solo kids or even Ben Skywalker should have been the sequel trilogy. Still Thrawn and Dark Empire are solid continuations.
We need the Thrawn novels as the next third trilogy, with an X- Wing companion series that runs alongside. The fourth trilogy should be about the Yuuzhan Vong Wars, with some companion series alongside that as well. The fifth trilogy should be about Abeloth, with a series about the joiner crisis before that.

This is brilliant absolutely brilliant and proves that Luke is truly the best and the most proficient Jedi.
There’s some ideas in here that they used in the Disney spin offs:
-Sidious surviving through cloning
- Sidious living on a planet full of star destroyers
- Sidious’s ability to make storms
- Luke using a force ghost to project himself
- Boba Fett surviving the sarlac
- Luke training Leia and Hans kid
- the first appearance of Holocrons
- the two of them defeating the emporer together at the end
