- * The thrilling final moments of this classic game - Round 11, Saturday 30th May, 1992 at Princes Park. Broadcast on Channel HSV-7 Melbourne and called by Bruce McAvaney, Dennis Cometti and Don Scott.
* After trailing Fitzroy all day, Collingwood's final quarter surge brings them to within 1 goal of the lead.
* Magpie ruckman (and future Lion) James Manson kicks for goal with his trademark unorthodox action. His shot is rushed through for a behind. Fitzroy lead by 3 points with just over 2 minutes of game time remaining.
* Fitzroy backman Peter Caven kicks in to restart play. Brett Stephens' spoil is well roved by Collingwood's Mark Fraser who drives the ball back into the Magpies forward line. The Fitzroy defenders rush to take possession but misjudge the flight of the ball!
* Lurking behind the pack is Collingwood backman-cum-forward, Gary Pert. Playing his first game against his former club, Pert collects the ball unopposed, runs into an open goal and kicks truly! The mighty Collingwood Army explodes with delirium and a Sherrin-shaped leather stake is driven through the hearts of the Fitzroy faithful! Collingwood now lead by 3 points with 1.49 left on the clock!
* The Magpies attempt to soak up time by playing the ball toward the outer boundary line, while the Lions try desperately to force the ball forward. (50 seconds!)
* Collingwood ruckman Damien Monkhorst punches the ball towards the boundary but Fitzroy's Paul Broderick intercepts and kicks hurriedly to teammate Jeremy Guard. Guard is paid the mark and kicks long to the goalsquare. (30 seconds!)
* The pack forms! Fitzroy captain Paul Roos flies high but cannot mark! The ball spills! Fitzroy's Paul Abbot gathers but is tackled hard! (15 seconds!)
* Will Gary Pert's miraculous goal sink his former club?? Is there still time for one last act of heroics?? Who can save the day for the Mighty Roy Boys??.....
I never get tired of watching this. I remember my dad picking me up and throwing me in the air when Roosey kicked that goal.
Thank you SO MUCH for this video!! I was also in the crowd behind the Fitzroy goals and I can STILL remember how GREAT it felt!! My brother and I ran onto the ground and into the Fitzroy rooms after the game and got the sing the song with the team!! WIll never forget this game :)
I remember going with my dad to that match when I was young. I think we only went in to watch the last quarter and remember the crowd going nuts when Roos scored and my dad throwing me in the air. My favourite footy memory.
This stands as my favourite game of all time. The crowd was delirious. And I just noticed myself patting Roosy on the back at 4:33!
A colourful sunset , a laughing child , Collingwood losing a close game....these are all beautiful things in life.
A sunset on the beach....gazeing at the stars at night...watching collingwood lose, these are truly beautiful things.
My favourite game of all time! Paul Roos was my hero.
I was there! And spotted myself on the wing at the final throw in - such an awesome win - one of the great Roys moments. Still love the mighty Lions.
Good to NOT have to see stupid replays from every angle. And no Dermie or Walls giving us their stupid 'special comments'.
Great to see the young fans running on the ground to celebrate without the commentators calling them 'idiots'!
No I was too busy sticking it up my useless Collingwood mates. They SOOOO gave it to me when they hit the front and I had to get some back. This was in my top 10 Fitzroy moments.
There are two stories.
Some say that Fitzroy refused the merger, and it was ironic that they died in 1996 and Footscray live more than 10 years on.
Some others say that Fitzroy was happy to merge, but Footscray refused.
In such emotional matters, truth becomes distorted.
Regardless, the whole episode was a tragedy for football and to this day, I still believe that Fitzroy were nothing but Guinea Pigs.
Paul Abbott, absolute machine... 6'4 and picks the ball up off his boot laces one grab gets the ball to Roos, drags down 2-3 players to clear room for him to snap the goal... 4 time night, 2 time day premiership star wont see ruckman as versitile as him in the game these days
I was there too... it was awesome.
actually wasn't it the other way around, it was the Footscray members that rallied to stop them merging not the Fitzroy fans with fundraisers....
FITZ 13.14 (Guard 3, Lynch 3, Abbott, Dundas, Harding, Lyon, Paxman, Roos, Stephens) def COLL 13.11 (Watson 3, Lehmann 2, Manson 2, McGuane 2, McKeown, Pert, Starcevich, Turner)
I follow Richmond but I love to see collingwood lose like that. Well done Roys.
I was there at the City end - packed with Pies supporters - Gayr pert goal went off - go pies
