    SAMMY THANK YOU I have seen so many top 10s this year and not one has even mentioned jojo rabbit, which was my absolute favorite film this year, i just feel it’s an absolute masterpiece and it’s being overlooked maybe bc it’s comedy? but to me it’s the most powerful, touching and important film i’ve seen in a longlong time

    It's a shame, that i haven't seen anyone mention Rocketman as one of the gems of 2019. It was easily my favorite, because it was so beautifully made and I've literally listened to the soundtrack daily since it came out. I thought that Taron Egerton did a marvelous job and I just wish people would appreciate it more. However I have yet to see some of the films on your list, so perhaps some may shove Rocketman off the #1 spot in my heart. Thanks for the insightful video, Sammy!

    • @rachellydiab
      @rachellydiab Před 4 lety +4

      Although Taron egerton was brilliant, I personally found the direction to be incredibly clumsy- bizarre casting (kid Eltons/mainly Bryce Dallas Howard and her absolutely terrible british accent, it completely distracted me in every scene she was in), the inability to commit to a particular tone, and some odd visual choices like the black and white scene, which didn't feel very sophisticated. I'm happy for anyone who loved it, bc finding a film you love is wonderful- But those are my critiques, and I think may be some of the reasons it didn't do as well with general audiences as some of these other films!

    god i love you for including Us, i couldn't stop thinking about this movie for two weeks after seeing it. and Lupita Nyong'o rightfully gets all the praise for her performance(s) but so often it's not without the prior remark of "i didn't like Us"/"Us didn't make any sense" and it's just sad to me that people straight up reject films where you have to think and work to understand and decode them.. like the movie is brilliant, Jordan Peele is so brilliant in visualising central issues of society, like he is literally using the full potential that film has as a medium and people don't even try to understand that.
    also loved the Lighthouse, Portrait of a Young Lady on Fire is also in my faves but i couldn't get on the hype train for 1917. i'm usually v much into any WW1 one fiction, cause i love the literature that followed the war so much, so i was ready for the movie to take me on the whole journey but it just didn't happen. i'm not sure why, i guess the main actor's performances were not quite convincing, i couldn't stop thinking OH MY GOD WHY ARE YOU SO FOOLISH cause someone i didn't believe them to be some naive young soldiers all new to the frontline.

    I loved 1917 but an issue I had with it was similar to the issue I had with saving private Ryan this being that whenever they encountered a German they had to be evil and always attack I beleive most people wouldn't be that evil. also the other issue I had was with the one shot style and although I loved the concept and how they pulled it off having it all in one cut makes it all feel to fast so the pressure aspect felt a lot weaker as it felt like they couldn't have been moving for that long and taking the time limit to seem far far to long to cause too much real pressure

    I think one of my favourite films of 2019 was Rocketman. I thought it was amazing, I loved it from start to finish and didn’t expect to love it as much as I do. I hated bohemian rhapsody, I thought it was awful and not just because of my dislike for Queen, I just wasn’t impressed like everyone else, so I was hesitant about Rocketman but I think it was a really incredible film.

      Rach Jade Absolutely agree, I’ve rewatched it multiple times and think it’s a shame it hasn’t got as much credit as it should

    Honestly my favourite was Jojo rabbit, I've also been a fan of Taika for a long time and the film blew me away. It was poignant and hilarious both separately and at the same time. It's like Taika has said in interviews, humour takes away the fear and power of the dictator or villain, and he did that beautifully.

    Us was a weird one, I really hated a lot of it and feel it put symbolism over storytelling and just making basic sense. And yet it was still so much better than the majority of horror films I've seen.

    wow surprised by jojo rabbit. I was super hype for it, but it just really disappointed me. it had its moments, but parts of it didnt quite sit well.

      yeah me too, i'm shocked that this is the first reply i've seen with the same opinion, the satire was just not effective enough for the topic, parts just seemed insensitive.
