It's like you read my mind this morning. I have people at work ask me how I can handle such a stressful job and never seem overwhelmed by it. I could never quite put it into words. I'm not sure that we are in need of a new way to encounter the sublime. All those mountains, and some of those forests which once inspired the highest frenzies of exultation in poets, philosophers and wanderers past are still there. As I see it, nature is at the core of sublime experiences and we are still free to delve into her wonder (though the landscape may be more human-influenced than it used to be). Explore nature and you may well be met with inestimable glory!

This goes a long way to explain why historical cathedrals were so huge and ornate, even though they were built in a time before gasoline-powered backhoes, cranes and the like. I always used to wonder, Why take the effort to make the ceiling five or six times as high as it needed to be? Maybe it was to illustrate the scale of God compared to man.

The idea of the Sublime also makes us want to achieve bigger things. I think it is not that difficult to confront it on our daily life: the grandeur of nature and museums are not the only part where to find it. You just need to develop a certain outlook on things to be able to find the sublime in a small leave falling from a tree, in the perfection of someone's eye or in a good book. I also think that when we experience that sublimity we are more likely to believe there is something bigger and more powerful than that we all know. Maybe that Sunday encounter of the old days wasn't such a crazy idea...

School of life, here's a hint for a future video. Alan Watts: a lesser known, but rather ingenious thinker. In his time he dessiminated eastern philosophy to a western audience with a western twist. This was before the rather weird sporadical New Age movement. One of his ideas was that the western idea of the ego is a result of western societal thinking which in turn trickers alienation from our true selves along with other neuroses.

The sublime could be found in the most ordinary parts of nature, you just have to love some particular part of nature and ultimately you will see the sublime, it doesn't quick, it has to be built into you.
When I saw the sublime I cried for at least 15 minutes, on and off, mostly crying, it felt like I was one with that view, I loved it. The view was a small landscape where people couldn't go regularly, it was uneven, some small parts of it were watery, I felt like I became one with it for a moment. It happened on 22nd of March 2022. I aslo think that you can't find the sublime if you are looking for it, it comes unexpectedly.

Reminds me of when I was attending Mass at Notre-Dame. All the tourists were watching the Mass like a spectacle when I was there just to go to Mass like any other Sunday. It was like we were Zoo animals on display. On that note, if you ever want the experience he's talking about go to a large Catholic basilica and if you ever get the opportunity go to Notre-Dame for the authentic Old-school European experience he's talking about.

I live in Manhattan and I try to, at least once a day, look up from the ground as I go about my every day business and observe the massive skyscrapers that are all around me. Someone wiser than I once said that when the ego confronts something it cannot deal with, it disappears...and without ego, you no longer see the separation between yourself and everyone else, I think this is at the heart of what is sublime, and what it means to feel "small". Facing death can also give you the same feeling, in short separating you from the shackles off what must be done as part of the human game, that boring job or the drudgery of a failing marriage, since nothing ultimately matters in the context of the cosmos, it absolves you for chasing what you truly want to do.

Inspired by theorists of the Sublime before him, Burke states that the Sublime is not an actual danger. Situated in distance, the Sublime is thus modified from humans' instinct to preserve him/herself. Such self-preservation consolidates our appreciation of the infinite, the greatness, and the obscure. For Burke, the Sublime experience is a "delightful terror." It would be interesting if there is a parallel analysis between the Burkean Sublime and the Kantian Sublime. In Kant, the Sublime indeed transcends way further and sublimates into a higher level!

Sublimity is why I like being introduced to philosophical ideas. These thoughts of: "Did anyone really think about that? xD" and "Oh, I thought of the exact same thing the other day! :D" They reassure you of your connection to humanity and when you ponder these sometimes beautiful works of imagination and logic you feel belittled and inspired at the same time. Very sublime example, this video.

I am taking a class, the Philosophy of the Sublime. Thank you for the Burke on the Sublime video! Can you please make more videos on the Sublime? Particularly regarding Longinus, Kant, Schiller, Dennis, Hegel, Schopenhauer, Kearney, Lyotard, Wong, Derrida, Nietzsche and anything about Freud's sublimation connection. There is so little on the Sublime that goes into detail and connects how each philosopher influences the next.
The class text is The Kantian Sublime and the Revelation of Freedom by Robert Clewis and we rely on several handouts to get the theory of everyone else I listed above but I need more!

Once I did the drug MDMA and I came to the moksha-like realization that ego negation is the only way to live a consistently content life. This has stuck long after the drug wore off (thankfully) and while I still have an ego, the daily activity of suppressing it, walking away with a genuine smile if someone gets one over on me for example, has made my life much happier.

The sublime inspired many artists and thinkers of the Romantic era. Which two or three landmarks from the chapter most embody this theme?

So the general gist is: "Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving
And revolving at nine hundred miles an hour
That's orbiting at nineteen miles a second, so it's reckoned
A sun that is the source of all our power
The sun and you and me and all the stars that we can see
Are moving at a million miles a day
In an outer spiral arm, at forty thousand miles an hour
Of the galaxy we call the 'milky way'"

Edmund Burke is considered by many as the father of conservatism.
He saw the French Revolution when it was happening, and he hated the violence and chaos.
