The 787B while being the smallest and Least powerful engine on the grid, it was the great Gas Mileage the car had and the fact that the engine was overbuilt, another problem the car had was it was using an older style body most of the car was technology from the early 80s and it’s still impressive how they were able to pull a win.

Rotaries were banned because manufacturers argued that the engine being a 3 cycle (?) had a greater resultant capacity than standard reciprocating engines, which were regulated at 3.5L. Plus fuel consumption was an issue that FIA had been planning to reduce to force car makers to make more efficient cars.

The 787B is not the best endurance race car ever. Of course this can also be very subjective. The 787B did not win another race that season and finished 5th as its best finish outside of Le Mans. FIA changed the entire formula for what the rules would be goingt forward after 1991 and this included what was known as Group C. It could easily be summized that the Porsche 956/962 was the greatest endurance race car ever made considering how dominant and how long it reigned as a champion endurance car. It could also be argued that the Sauber C9 or C11 was the greatest endurance race car ever built ignoring the fact it never won Le Mans and just focusing on its performance with its incredibly powereful twin turbo V8 and its performance on the track.
