In this lecture on the history of the Virginia Colony, Tom Richey discusses the failed attempt by Walter Raleigh to plant a permanent settlement on Roanoke Island during a war with Spain and the early hardships endured by the settlers of the Jamestown Colony and the leadership of John Smith. John Rolfe changed the fortunes of the Virginia Colony (and of the entire Chesapeake region) when he planted a new strain of tobacco that grew well in the Chesapeake climate. Tobacco became the primary cash crop in the Chesapeake region during the colonial period.
The second part of this lecture focuses on the labor sources employed in the Virginia Colony and tensions between the settlers and the local Powhatan Indians. Indentured servants were the primary labor force in Virginia in the early 17th century but in the late 17th century - especially following Bacon's Rebellion in 1676 - African slavery became much more prominent. The planting of cash crops required a lot of land and the English colonists continued to press into the interior of Virginia. In 1622, the Powhatan Indians struck back, killing over 300 colonists in what is known as the 1622 Indian Massacre.
The content of this lecture spans the end of APUSH Period 1 and the beginning of APUSH Period 2. In most APUSH textbooks, this content will be found in either Chapter 1 or Chapter 2.

At some point, I hope to do a series on 19th century imperialism. You're probably most likely to see something like that in the spring. My focus during the fall will largely be on US History pre-1877 and European History pre-1815.

I'm a descendant of William Tracy. JOHN Smyth (not the same as the pocahontas John sm>th although they did meet) was in chains because he was in trouble with the courts in Gloucestershire prior to setting sail, it is the reason for the delay. He came over on the Supply ship and William had to secure his transport as a promise.
John Smyth wrote about it in the Nibli papers. I'd love to get more information on who helped Williams wife and son Thomas get back to england prior to the massacre if anyone has any of that information I'd be very appreciative.

Fun Facts about John Smith
He tried to fish with a frying pan once
He stabbed a sting ray once and it stung him. He thought he was dying but once he survived he wrote that he had his revenge on the beast and ate it for dinner
He wrote the first accounting of all the people in Jamestown and all the tools and provisions they had with them, and he was so salty at Captain Newport for the whole almost executed him thing that he left his name out of the original 7 chosen to rule the colony
John Smith was a petty petty man folks you gotta love him
Captain John Smith is one of those people who gets MORE interesting the more you look into him. Not the case with most historical figures.
Tom Richey On one hand he's so full of himself, but on the other hand... he actually did do incredible things. I would love to find a good factual bio (I mean I want to read his autobiography too, but I have to take everything he says about himself with a grain of salt)

Hi, i found a old beach tree my guess is about 4-5 hundred years old about 3 feet or so around . On it is written Croatan and a rectangle with a strange symbol in the rectangle simular to a m but instead of a straight line it is more like a square block with two thinner blocks connected as a m would be. I was just curious if it might have any historical value related to the Croatan people living in Virginia in the 1500's?

Hi! Unsure if you can help - I am writing a thesis on the development of slavery in Virginia during 17 and 18th C. Have you any say in this? I mean, indentured servants, lack of/decline developed this... racism did too, and so did the British but any way you can develop these points?
To my knowledge the word was actually Croatoan. There is an archaeological museum on the island. At the museum they teach of Manteo and Wanchese etc.
I thought croatoan was craved on a gatepost of the fort and Cro was carved on a tree

I thought that the Roanoke colonists joined the Croatans. Weren't there reports of blond-haired natives within the Virginia/North Carolina area?
That is one of the theories and there were reports but there is no conclusive evidence that this happened.

I'd love to learn the motivation of the people who went to Virginia from 1607-1675. I have ancestors from that time period who weren't wealthy, they farmed their own land, many cousins still live there today. Why did they come to such a place?

James Town suffered because they did not grow their own food along with the tobacco cash crop.
Croaton was a small branch of Indians living in NC.
THE 1622 may have been due to Pocahontas death and her child not returning to the colony.

Sir Walter Raleigh was not English as his real name was Sir Walter Dela Raleigh and that is Spanish. Most of the first people who came to Virginia were Sephardic Jewish Muslims, the same people as the Powatan Natives and they still live on the same land today.

Love these videos. When speaking about the Native Americans to better acknowledge their suffering beyond "think of them as victims of European settlement". I just feel like it downplays the serious and important history of cruelty,
+Josh Mitchell It doesn't downplay it as much as allow Indians to play something other than a stock character in history. The settlers of Jamestown did not have the resources to be very cruel at that point. If I were analyzing things in another time and place, it would be different.
Regardless of their abilities. The settlers went to someone else's land seeking their resources And contributed to the further colonial expansion. I just dont see the point in sympathizing with the first "invaders" as i like to call them.
And furthermore, people who smoke cigarettes are on a permanent high, and apparently not a good one because they always need more, and it is hard for too many smokers to do it in moderation, so it is not worth telling people to smoke less often.

Islam cut much of the trade routes from Europe to the South and to the East. The aristocracy of Europe felt forced to enter colonialism to feed their populations and start progress again. Islam dominated the Mediterranean Sea for about 1,000 years. It is not Politically Correct to highlight this very important point, but Virginia is an indirect product of this motivation.
Doesn't clash with the Mainstream history Fire. It falls under the phrase "the Muslims cut-off European trade routes" just with more details. ;)
