  • They are slippery, squirmy and covered in something they really shouldn't be... Yes, I am referring to the rather unpleasant experience of trying to decon kids. Which is why in this week's Give Me Five, we cover some seriously cool pediatric decon tricks. Find out how to not only keep them safe, but make the entire situation slightly more bearable for all involved.

I’m curious what materials that a child could get into that they would need to be decontaminated after being in contact with? Could you guys share an example please. I work in a rural hospital as a newly licensed LPN and really appreciate the learning opportunity from you guys.

Happily decon & kids is not commonly needed, but does occur
      most common:
      organophosphate / fertilizer exposure
kids who get into lots of garage chemicals

@@pedi-ed-tricsemergencymedi6066 oh interesting! I never thought of fertilizer as an example. The car seat trick is a great thing for me to know and share with other nurses. There’s lot of farming around here

Directly From: Angie to your Decon question
Children are very curious and can get into many different types of substances that may require decontamination.
These vary widely and can range from household cleaners to agricultural chemicals. Sadly, some children are also exposed to chemicals involved in the making of illicit substances, such as living in a home where meth is made.
Additionally, children must be considered in any disaster event, whether accidental or intentional. In the case of bad actors who wish to cause harm, we must consider decontaminating children from chemicals or radiological/nuclear materials.
