‘Hit worse than Covid’: Despair shrouds Himachal’s orchards and hotels after flood | Ground Report

Despair looms over apple orchards in Theog, a few kilometres away from Shimla. At first hit by climate irregularities, and then battered by heavy rains and floods in July - the final yield is likely to be reduced by two-thirds.
“The continuous rain and flood after July 7 caused great losses. Not only were roads broken but the landslides destroyed many orchards also,” said apple trader Rajendra Singh.
While orchards were damaged because of landslides in hilly regions, the farmers are unable to take their yields to the markets because of broken roads. Locals said the monopolistic presence of the Adani group in the apple industry is affecting small producers further.
Meanwhile, the damage to road infrastructure has also impacted the tourism sector, which brings in an annual revenue of Rs 11,000 crore.
Pradeep Sharma, a hotel manager in Fagu near Shimla, said, “Tourism has never been this bad…all rooms in the hotel lie empty and there are no tourists here despite off-season discounts.”

They should give/donate a small part of their produce to poor and downtrodden, charity gives protection against losses and disasters and the masses also get uplifted and healthy.

Truth to be told farmer gets near to nothing .. we sell a box of 25 -30 kg apple for like in peak season 900 to 1800( best case ) which includes all cost ( labour cost + transportation + apple spary for growth , leaf etc. + Manure etc.) In the end what we get is around 300 to 500 rs in best scenario in worst case we have to sell in loss. And same apple sold for like 100 rs per kg to. 250 rs per kg ..
Legalization of Marijuana can do wonders for Uttarakhand and Himachal Economy. Tourism is seasonal activity and is responsible for all the disasters. The government can also impose sin tax and collect revenue.

@@Sushantkrar yes you can definitely sell to any private company but cannot seek good price because companies like Adani would have crashed the prices like they are doing in Himachal for Apples. There would have been no MSP and in the absence of MSP farmers would have been suffered. Add MSP clause to farm laws and we farmers are ready to support the farm laws. But government will not do so because real objective was the welfare of the corporates not farmers
