    Vaesen is the first rpg game I intent to actually try to run as a first time GM. Your thoughts about how to tweak some things and add other missing elements are so helpful. If you would make videos about the rest of adventures from wicked secret I would enjoy it very much because at the moment this is the only suplement translated to my native language.

      Good luck and have fun GMing this wonderful game. I'll definitely return to A Wicked Secret soon as it has some of my favorite adventures in it.

    Thanks for doing this. I have run it once for friends and an doing it again soon at a convention, but I am changing it up a little. I'm setting it in the Scottish Highlands. I am ditching the count's invitation as the PCs got all into the count and his story and the cancellation of his meeting at the end just fell very flat. Instead I have Axel wanting to sell the property to a mining company. The nisse is opposed to this sale. The book for the PCs comes through a letter from the mining company seeking investigators who might be able to solve the problems at the location, allowing the sale to go through. The link to the conflict between tradition and industrialisation is then at the forefront immediately and requires the players to decide between appeasing the nisse or fighting it to serve the purposes of the mining company. The other NPCs will be other investigators hired by the same company, all on the same mission. The players will need to work with the others to put the clues together.

      This is awesome - I feel like you could take your version and almost turn it into an entirely new adventure. I could see the "accidents" extending into the area where the mine would be as well.

    Regarding the "Storytime" scene, it's my understanding that this mystery was designed as one that introduces people to Vaesen, and touches on all mechanics that it can. The Storytime scene is a fantastic place for characters to allude to their Dark Secret (or tell it outright), which should drastically change the atmosphere of the group. (New players testing the game out at various conventions would be able to explore this aspect of their pregen character to see how it works.) This works best when good roleplaying is involved, of course. That being said, I was particularly excited to have this scene play out in that manner - as this was the third mystery I ran with my group - but surprisingly nobody wanted to share their own personal story or a bit of their Dark Secret, even when their characters had been working together for some time. Needless to say I was pretty disappointed with their decision but I'm not going to force anyone at my table to share something about their character that they don't want to in-game. (I just made sure to play up the other stories that the NPCs told extra good.) Just goes to show that something that may appear enticing to the GM may not resonate with players.
    Also, if you really want to weave some great drama in your playthrough, run the investigator brothers Samuel & Daniel like how their characters are in the TV show Supernatural (Sam & Dean) because they're *literally* those characters. In Supernatural, Sam is usually running contrary to Dean's aggressive guns-first nature unless there's a darn good reason to go in emptying magazines or swinging silver. So I eventually split the brothers up at the inn, having Samuel side with a more compassionate PC and Daniel siding with a more paranoid / aggressive PC. My session's climax had the brothers actually arguing with each other and the PCs had to stop a fearful Daniel from killing Grayfoot and/or burning the whole inn down. Good times.

      Yes, I could see how storytime could really encourage new roleplayers to share more about their characters' backstories, especially in an ongoing campaign where players likely put more time into that history. On the other hand, at conventions, you're going to get more experienced roleplayers in general who have less attachment to their pregenerated PCs. I still think piling all the stories up at the same time however slows the game too much and takes away from the other aspects of a roleplaying game - like investigation, NPC interaction, and exploration.
      Funny enough I'm not super familiar with Supernatural, but I love your suggestion on how to roleplay them during the game. Letting the players divide and conquer them is really fun.

    I think this could work really well as a Warhammer fantasy Roleplay scenario set in Kislev. Very tempted to fit it into my Enemy Within campaign

      That’s a good idea… the proprietor of the inn would make for a perfect dwarf, stubborn, obsessed with modernizing, etc. And the two brothers are obvious witch hunters…

    Really enjoying your RPG reviews. You provide a good overview with helpful tips on running the adventure. Looking forward to the rest of the Vaesen adventures and I'd also love to see you cover Free League's Alien: Destroyer Of Worlds to complete the trilogy.
    There's an audio issue during the first 10 minutes of the video which fortunately does go away. Hopefully, you can work out what caused it so it doesn't impact future videos.

      Thanks for pointing out the audio issue - I think I figured out the issue and will fix it in future videos. Definitely owe you guys that Destroyer of Worlds review - I'll get on it!

    Enjoyed your video. Again :-) A question though: How did you deal with the fact that only characters (or NPCs) with the sight could see the angry vaesen? That is often a problem I have with some adventures. They forget that the Vaesen are invisible to most people. I mean, they see the effects of what the Vaesen is doing but they can`t the the thing itself.

    • @1ShotJC
      @1ShotJC  Před 6 měsíci +1

      I think you have to approach it a little like Ghostbusters. Always allow the PCs to convince key NPCs that there is such a thing as the supernatural, and that they have a problem. So while Axel can't see Grayfoot, he won't stay stubborn long once the PCs point out to him how the accidents are connected. Maybe he asks for proof that there's a Vaesen, and then the PCs can conspire to bait Grayfoot. "You want proof, Axel? Go ahead, say to the cat that you can't wait to tear the barn down - watch what happens, next..." Once Axel believes he has a Vaesen problem, however, he still might not agree with the PCs' solution, and in fact it might push him more to modernize the place faster so the Vaesen leaves. (And fortunately for this adventure, several of the NPCs might have the Sight too, like one of the brothers, or the Runo Singer).
