This is great, I wish our great king would have been able to avoid the cowardly ambush by the swedes and Danes, but alas it's history and our great ship has long been lost. I emailed this website to my cousin in Norway. He could barely understand the Old Norse brought here by the Norwegian Vikings..He said that the text helped alot with the translation. This language has not been spoken in Norway for centuries..I am glad that the culture lives on in the Faeroese!

They sing old germanic songs like Regin Smidur about Siegfried/Sigurdur the dragonslayer etc. Ormurin Langi.. It´s called kvaddans, it´s performed as a long row of people, the one to the right holding the thumb of the one to the left etc, stomping extra hard when something exciting is happening like Sigurdur´s death, the mourning by Hjördis etc.. Olaf Tryggvasson´s last minutes, attacked by norwegians, danes and swedes. On our runstones known as "Då konungar kämpade.."

But we lost that connection to our rich heritage, the Northmen kept it and our shared religion going - for whatever reason. Which is why they also have more runic texts, unlike Germans who simply weren't into writing stuff down or maintaining an oral tradition. All the tribal heritage is lost forever, and songs like that above only offer a hazy glimpse into our own past. Just imagine how awesome the warsongs of the Harii must have been, for example. They inspired the Einherjar and the Wild Hunt. Our oldest song is the Hildebrandslied, but that's just one of many.
The dance and this manner of singing, with the skippar starting each verse and the rest joining in is something unique to the Faroe Islands. Many of the old songs, this one as one example, exists all over Scandinavia. Many of the tales told also exists in the sagas or other medieval prose, such as the Song of Roland or Niebelungenlied.

It was the greatest ship in the viking era with 130 of the best Norwegian vikings. They getting ambushed in a naval battle by a coalision of the Danish and the Swedish king and some Norwegian enemies. They fought bravely, but the enemies was to overwhelming
Sorry, it was NOT the biggest ship in the Viking Age. Knut the Great build one that was bigger and Fillipus Earl had one bigger in ca 1190. Then Hakon Hakonson ca 1250/60 had two that was bigger, Mariasuden and one other (I think it was called Christsusden). Well, if you say the Viking Age ended 1066 at Stanford Bridge, you can forget the three last one!
Because there is a lead singer (with the longer ballads there are sometimes two) who starts the stanza and the others join in. The chorus is the same and sung between every stansa, and is usually easy to remember. This ballad is longer than 9 minutes. It is about 83 or 85 stanzas long, can't remember.
@radbarij IPA is basically for english speaking countries an d also in the army. If you listen to the skipper (captain IN Faroese) at 3.36 minutes it is pronounced overgashpur.
I could listen to this all day, every day. :-). It is absolutely wonderful. Wish I had the words in Norwegian so I could translate it into English. I have found a few verses but not all.
@AaViRo No there's no percussion instruments. But not all the islands have a dance with such a strong beat as far as I've heard. According to my father who live on the islands the people from the southern islands stamp down rather hard making a strong sound while the ones from the capital traditionally have danced with less sound and more springy steps. I might remember wrong though...

There are a few of the old Faroese ballads (the ones that only exist in the Faroes, and others that are.... quite different variations of other ballads) that have been translated to danish (and probably to swedish and norwegian from there). Because there were a few of those .... gatherers (fairy tales, proverbs, riddles, rhymes and ballads) that travelled around the Faroe Islands in those days. Some were Faroese, others probably danes either translated or transcribed. Faroese gatherers also ...
@EmilReiko Btw. a good key of understanding the old sagas and kvad is to study the Pathsun tribal structure and social organisation. The indo-aryan tribal systems of the Pathsuns in Afganistan and Pakistan is not only the closest relative, but also last living relative to the tribal systems of the old norse. Behind all the muslim rethoric, the system is intact.
@cilibinarii Its true, that its hard to paint a clear picture of the world view of pre-christianity northern europe, but literature such as snorres hiemskringla and saxo's chronicles of denmark - underbuild by archaeological finds and pre-christian poetry such as hávamál - still draw the outlines of the mindset of vikingage scandinavia. This particular ballad was written by a known author during the period of time I previously mentioned. It draws on information from Heimskringla and other sources. The reason for it being written about that particular Norwegian king is his connection to Sigmundur Brestisson (who was at the time the ballad was written regarded as a national hero) who served under Ólav Tryggvason. What you said is untrue because the ballad itself is old, not ancient. However the story is!

i've never visited Iceland or the faroes, but i read a lot about those places and their culture, i know Iceland dont have Kveadir and such but still sure there is some pagnism in the sagas but most of it concerns christianity right? so how would the come of christianity have bled out the old ways (as such)? just curious? and the food? whats the differnce there?
