- Hopefully, my chat and demo will give you a smile ,if nothing else a example of how simple it is to modify and restore a straight razor .
2 of these razors needed significant work to correct warps and poor geometry. little double duck less effort 👌. another day I'll refine them to shave ready final finisher , forgive inconsistencies, and incoherent mumblings just driven home 🏡 had a phone 📱 fault .
I really enjoy honing videos Martin! You do great videos and really good commentary. You make me feel like i'm there right next to you and if I was just visiting a friend at his house and we are having a coffee and honing some razors. Cheers!
Looks like you have a few new straights to review all top quality brands! Im joining you in a hone today as i have an old Boker Edelweiss 5/8 on the 12k shapton. Have a good evening, best wishes Andy.
I’ve honed 2 so far. Just getting into it. Thanks for the videos
My pleasure 🙏 I'm just spreading the word , and debunking the mystery 😀
I sharpen kitchen knives and use shavettes (the horror!!!) but I’m really just here to comment that the loupe/maginifying bino thing makes you look like the Terminator somehow
Apologies for not knowing how to edit I'm not a whiz kid techy 😅 .
Ooh, I do like your little belter! Just a quick question, Martin: How do you properly tell when you have removed the scratches from the previous stone? Do you hone in a slightly different direction or do you just become used to the visual size of the scratches?
Well, probably a mix of feel and experience? I used to count the laps , now it's just automatic , to check optically isn't so important now . Thanks for your feedback it's appreciated 🙂 👍
I own a double-sided 3k/8k stone - hopefully this will be sufficient to get a good enough edge for shaving onto my new razor?
8k is an absolute minimum , 10k is fine for most people, if you've a pasted paddle strop ( cheap alternative to a 10k stone ) then it will work well ,
How do you lap your stones mate?
How often do you hone? I wonder how these razors can last over 100 years if you keep removing material from them?
in my experience if you are careful not to damage the edge and strop carefully you don't need to hone much at all, maybe once a year, the edge can be touched up with a pasted strop or balsa if it is a little dull.
