  • Outbound & Inbound MBTA Red Line Trains meet at Charles/MGH Station in this May 2023 scene. The Red Line is one of five rapid transit services operated by the MBTA and runs from the Alewife Transportation Center in Arlington to the north down to Peabody Square in the Ashmont-Dorchester neighborhood to the south. Additionally, a branch down to Braintree, running adjacent to the Old Colony Railroad Main Line, splits off at Columbia Road in South Boston. Charles/MGH is the only remaining elevated station on the main trunk of the Red Line, and is also located at the foot of the historic Longfellow Bridge, which Red Line trains use to the cross the Charles River. Long-term plans call for an extension of the Blue Line from Bowdoin Square underneath Cambridge Street to terminate at a new lower level here, which would connect the Red and Blue Lines together for the first time. When the station was rebuilt in 2007, provisions were included for this new station. The Red Line uses three main types of rolling stock, including a new type of similar appearance to the new Orange Line cars currently in service. However, the new Red Line cars are not used in active service at the present time, so the two other types of rolling stock are seen in this video.
