    In this Pro game for $500, I provide multiple Catan strategy tips sprinkled throughout the video! A lot of these pertain to the Monopoly card. However, there are 3 main strategy tips that this game showcases that are taught at the end of the video.
    Catan Strategy Tip #1 - Look at the ______'s __________!
    This is essential when you have a monopoly, but it's also very useful for tracking cards in general. If you forget what everyone has, you can always use this tip to get a general idea of what resources are in play.
    Catan Strategy Tip #2 - Be ______ with Monopoly, especially on a __ board!
    Whenever there are more opportunities to Monopoly, you should be implementing this tip. The Monopoly can easily be the worst and best development card in the game, and to get its maximum potential use this tip.
    Catan Strategy Tip #3 - Think about Monopoly in terms of "___ ____ ____ ______ __ ____?"
    A common trap when using the Monopoly is to simply think about the number of cards you are going to get, when in reality this may not be the optimal strategy. You want to actually be thinking about BOTH the number of resources you're going to get AND this tip. Monopoly is easily one of the most misused development cards in the game, and using this tip can help you gain more value.

    If I was Hawkeye I would be tabletalking grey and green like crazy to trade me wood and brick for that wheat port. I know you got a bit lucky with the year of plenty but even knights would have helped you rob grey of precious woods to get that settlement. 4:31 Personally I would rather have the 5 9 10 with wood and ore since it gets you good production of wood with a close 3:1 port along with a pairing for a longest road game if grey doesn't cut you off. I am influenced though since my 2 most recent games were longest road wins.
    13:37 I would try to trade for either woods or wheat and try to get both the settlement on the wheat port and the city
    19:30 I would wait longer on the monopoly until there were more wheats on the board or there were enough ores to have two cities/multiple dev cards, so I'd probably play the knight instead

    I like it when you show the end of game stats. In this case the dice stats show how 4, 5, and 6 absolutely dominated 8, 9, and 10, which led to a big resource differential between you and gray vs. blue and green. I think you were well positioned, but had the dice been more balanced things would have been interesting.

    4:37. I'd go with Option 2. Here's the strengths I see in that setup.
    1) Groundhog said that with so much ore and wheat on the board, there will be less fighting for longest road. Option 2 also gets you in on that longest road game with room for expansion along the right side of the board. You only need one more settlement over there to get your wood and bricks roughly equal.
    2) This longest road potential doesn't come at the cost of city building potential; the 6-3-5 is relatively balanced ore-wheat for city building later on.
    3) If we're expanding on the right hand side of the board, the brick port is within pretty easy reach, which means we only *have* to trade for 1-2 sheep before having a backdoor sheep source of our own.
    Option 1 does have some things going for it. Coordinated ore and sheep, plus plenty of wheat, implies that you could play OWS with those spots. But "plenty of wheat" may in this case be too much of it. 10 dots of wheat vs 4 of ore and sheep, on a board where everyone has wheat access, means that if Blue can beat you to the wheat port, you have a bunch of wheat production and nowhere to offload it. And then there's the 9 brick with zero access to wood. Despite the coordinated 5-ore and 5-sheep, the rest of the resources here aren't really in harmony, especially compared to Option 2.

    • @MenloMarseilles
      @MenloMarseilles Před 3 lety +2

      Okay! First one was a little off, let's see if we can think this second one (13:42) through better.
      Blue is two wood and one brick away from taking the wheat port. Given how much brick you have, gray is probably holding a lot of wood right now. At minimum 1, possibly 2. Feeding blue the settlement seems possible next turn, especially with everyone being able to see how many cards you have or seeing you get a bunch of cities/devcards.
      If you buy a settlement, you have awkward leftovers. 1 brick, 3 sheep, 1 wheat, 6 ore. Still way over robber levels, but without much you can build directly. But you can convert this into two devcards if you're willing to 4:1. What are we drawing for? Road building gives us the "cut off Gray" plan. VPs and Knights are win condition, Monopolies are good, YoP is good... OK, so devcards are actually useful here.
      Building a city here means... compared to the port settlement, you get more sheep and more brick. Do you need either right now? I think it's fine to wait a turn. If you don't buy both devcards right away, you'll still be sitting on 40% of a city if you 4:1'd the ore, and 60% of a city if you didn't. And the remainder should be easy to get; you have a 7/8 chance of producing a double wheat or double ore before next turn.
      So yeah. Buy the devcard first, in case it changes things (Road Building etc). Then YoP for wood, build wheatport, and... actually I don't think you buy the second devcard. You tempt fate a *little* with being at 8 cards but you can discard the brick (less important now) and three ore in the 1/2 of games where it happens, instead of guaranteeing a loss of 3 ore by trading it now. As mentioned before, you have a 3/4 chance of producing double wheat before your next turn, and only a 1/3 chance of producing ore.

    • @DyLightedCatan
      @DyLightedCatan  Před 3 lety +1

      Wow! Well said! These are honestly my favorite comments to read. When I can actually see my viewers engaging with my work and critically thinking! You have a pretty good point on 4:1 ore is really painful, but since I was just trying to buy development card to defend myself I think it's a bit more acceptable here.

    Great video as always. Generally speaking using mono when it greatly improves your hand is correct, but you also have to consider you are stripping your opponents of those cards as well. Clearly using mono to prevent your opponent from winning on their turn or next couple turns is a correct play, but I am wondering if there are other circumstances where using it to hinder your opponents is correct (maybe to solidify a winning position?).

    • @DyLightedCatan
      @DyLightedCatan  Před 3 lety +3

      I responded to another comment above with a very similar question.
      There’s still a bunch more on the monopoly but I didn’t have time to cover it in this video. Basically you can monopoly a specific person if they are VERY far ahead or about to win. You can use monopoly both offensively and defensively. In this video I was focusing on how to maximize value for yourself instead of hurting opponents. However, there are situations where you want to be playing it to simply slow an opponent down.

    Although I normally like to have sufficient wood and brick for roads, I think the black set up is better. The 2:1 wheat is just too tempting and the blue player won't be in a position to get a free road, so taking 5-9-10 second means the race is on. Then 9-2 and 6-3 should be the next goals, in parallel with city-ing up. On average, in such 'side-doughnut' configurations it pays to settle near the hole as it gives you more room for expansion.
    Buy two wood, get the 2:1 port and 2 dev cards. It is the safest bet long term.
    Wouldn't play dev card just yet. I'd be buying roads to get to 4-11 and then 6-3.

    Pause... I think on the massive 15 card turn with a Year of Plenty, I'd use the Year of Plenty for 2 wood to cut Hawkeye off to the wheat port... Wood is the only thing you don't produce, and Hawkeye is your only real threat for largest army, and really only if he gets on the wheat port since his sheep production and overall production is so much lower than your own... Groundhog doesn't produce enough ore to compete with you for army, and will probably go for longest road based on his setup... Ian doesn't produce any sheep and the port he's heading towards is a sheep port, so it's unlikely he'll be able to compete with you for army either... So just cutting off Hawkeye and eliminating him from the army race seems like the best play... It makes you a big threat but honestly with 15 (17) cards no matter what you do you're going to be a big threat so you might as well eliminate the the biggest competitor to your easiest win condition... It also could possibly force Hawkeye and Ian to race for the 3-1 port at the bottom right of the island, since they both could really use it, and forcing races is generally a good thing (although they'll both probably be stealing from you anyways with your position)... Still, it ensures only 1 of them will get a useful port for the game, and the one who doesn't is going to have more difficulty buying dev cards... Then with 6 ore, 3 sheep, 1 wheat, and 1 brick left I'd probably buy a dev card since you're clearly in the lead, see what it is, then maybe convert 4-1 ore to wheat to buy another based on what that dev card is... It's wasteful since you produce way more wheat than ore, but if you don't you'll be passing with 8 cards, so even if it is a little wasteful with your ore, you should be able to make it up with your massive production and wheat port, and it's probably better than passing with 8 cards and taking a 50/50 chance you lose half your hand... All of this is assuming no one will trade you with 15 cards to start your turn, and I'm pretty sure no one will... Ok unpause, let's see how close I get...

    Pause #2... I don't think there's enough ore out there to use the monopoly on ore, and that"s the resource you could really use on this turn... There is more wheat than ore out there, and you do have a wheat port, but I think I would personally just play the knight this turn since it's on your hex... Even if it is just your 5-sheep hex with a settlement on it, you'll probably be buying a dev card this turn and have no sheep left in your hand, so unblocking the sheep is a solid move... Also keeping up in the knight race with Hawkeye could be crucial, and he's already got 1 knight down and 1 dev card unplayed and you don't have any knights down yourself... I'd also probably put it on a spot that blocks Hawkeye, but maybe steal from a leader (like on the 3-ore but steal from Ian since he has 2 powerful cities and also has a dev card face down)... Maybe buy the dev card before playing a knight to see what it is, but I think no matter what it was I'd play the knight over the mono this turn... I know my guy NeoNate would support my choice of patience with the monopoly, but let's see what you do...

    @jakobbrun6535 Před 3 lety +1

    Hi DyLighted! I really love the in depth analysis and explanation of initial placement, it is such a critical factor for the entire remainder of the game. Thought experiment: Lets say 3rd position go for the 5-9-10 as you do. What then happens if 4th position takes the strong wood spot, but also clamps down on the 5-6-11, trusting he will be able to trade his rare wood for brick and sheep? Is this even a valid consideration (he will get 2 cities pretty fast). Which spot would you take in this case, and why?
    A further thing - in this game, Hawkeye gets a great 1st settlement but a poor 2nd settlement. I feel like going first is incredibly difficult when I play, since it feels like so much is out of your hands; your opponents, in particular number 2 pick, gets to decide which your 2nd settlement will be. You have made a great guide to 3rd position picks - I would love to hear similar thoughts for all positions on the board on many different board textures.

      I think I would go on the 6-3-4 for the thought experiment you were talking about.
      On different positions vs different board textures, perhaps one day I’ll make a guide on this. I’m glad you liked my video on 3rd position!

    On the turn where you had 15 cards, here's what I would do:
    Year of plenty for 2 woods & bank trade 4 ore for a wood (Assuming other players won't trade with you). Build 2 roads to the 9/12/3:1 and place a settlement there. Your hand is 3 sheep, 1 wheat & 2 ore, thanks to the 3:1, and your strong wheat, next turn you're almost guaranteed to be able to upgrade the 5/9/10 to a city.
    This is a massive production boom, putting you miles ahead of anyone else in the game, it gives you a 3:1 port, and it blocks grey's expansion which is good because he's the best player and has the 2nd best position, after your own. Very soon, you'll have 3 cities on res allowing you to consitently buy dev cards, you should easily get largest army before anybody else. You'll probably be able to get longest road too for 10VP, if the others players sling each other to make sure you don't get longest road, they can't stop you expanding to a new settlement on the 5 sheep which you'll very quickly upgrade into a city to win the game.

    Great video! And you played very well. Wonder if Groundhog would have done better with the 8/4/sheep port on his second pick.

      I think the 3/9/11 was still the right pick. Even if he didn’t perform super well, it’s important to not be results oriented.

      @@DyLightedCatan Yeah you might be right. Preventing grey from getting the 9/3/11 is nice. But I just like the 8 ore spot better for some early city action. He still would have had access to all 5 recources. And the sheepport goes well with the 8 sheep spot on his first pick. On the other hand, it would have made him very dependend on 8 and 4 rolls. But he might have had a shot at largest army with this set up. Anyway... good luck in the upcoming games!

    That dirty monopoly trick...I've thought of it I guess, but now looking at it, it's a really smart play. I'll have to remember that when I play with family.

      It can certainly win you games if pulled off correctly!

    I always apply real world concepts whenever I play Catan. There is this negotiation principle where you have to leverage the other person into believing they need what you have. This can be seen in sales. This is also achieved by simply asking "Hey, what do you need'? I also apply a lot of economic principles to the game such as Aggregate Supply and Comparative Advantage. These two principles have a little to do with distribution of resources, or at least that's what I use them for in game.

    I've watched a number of your videos and the analysis you perform on your matches is stunning, and your mastery of this game is clear. If you somehow ever got bored of Catan, I'm sure you would be successful applying your analytical mind to other games. Great work!

      Thanks Hunter! I’ve been wanting to make an AmongUs Strategy channel since there isn’t really one out there, but I don’t want to split too much time to it. I’m also a bit afraid that the game (Among Us) like Fall Guys is going to die out.
