    I harvest about 20 pineapples a year from my home garden. All of the information in this video is accurate and very thorough. It matches up with the mistakes and successes I had over the years. I especially liked the part about letting the crown cure so it doesn't rot and being careful to not get dirt down inside the crown.

      @@leemandy2548 Yes, you can root the pineapple sections after cutting before you plant them or you can section already rooted crown before planting. I'm yet to see any clear advantage of the rooted crown sections over the non-rooted sections.

    I liked and subscribed earlier with the onion root scrap planting.. I love the fact that you are teaching us to get as much as possible from scraps that are usually thrown away, without fancy gadgets, containers, store-bought soil, fertilizers, and tools. Just everyday stuff that you already have or can find for free, and using food that usually grows only one fruit or vegetable, but we get multiple plants from it. I am a firm believer in 'knowledge is power'. If even a new gardener can't do this, they are not trying hard enuff. Ironically, I am watching this on New Years Eve and Auld Lang Syne sounded perfect! Thank you for the calm voice and easy to understand instructions.

    Very nicely produced and explained, with no clickbait. Great video, thanks for making. Would pinching out the apical bud, but otherwise leaving the crown intact, also work to get multiple plantlets? Just wondering if this would be better for propagating a unique cultivar more slowly, but with less risk. What kind of failure rate do you get for quarter crowns?

    • @dr_obisgarden
      @dr_obisgarden  Před 2 lety +6

      Thanks for your kind words. Yes, you can pinch the apical bud without sectioning the crown, and the buds will sprout. However, due to the size of the crown, this method will result in fewer plantlets at a time. You can increase the success rate by letting the crown grow for some time, before removing the apical bud... This method is indeed really ideal for multiplying unique cultivars... Success rate is usually high. At least 3/4 will grow 1 or more plantlets. If there are fungus problems in your area, you can ensure success by dipping the bottoms of the sections in a fungicide solution... Happy gardening.

    • @dr_obisgarden
      @dr_obisgarden  Před 2 lety +3

      Thanks, Azhar! If you have fungal problems, the rooting hormone may not be enough. Fungus can still attack the rooted plant and cause it to die sooner or later. I'll advice you to try and dip the sections in a fungicide solution for about 3 mins before planting. Alternative, if you don't have access to a fungicide, try and sterilize the soil or media using heat before sowing. All the best.

      @dr_obisgarden  Před 2 lety +9

      Depending on the variety and where you live, it can take between 1 and half years to 3 years to mature and harvest. I've lived in Michigan before and I know the winters can be chilly which will knock down your pineapple. However, the good news is that pineapples can be grown in pots so you can move the pot indoors when the weather gets cold. I recently posted a video about growing pineapples in pots, you can check it out here: czcams.com/video/LGbHLcQTM-I/video.html . Hope this helps. Happy gardening.

    • @dr_obisgarden

      No. The cut crown sections/ quarters dry up rather quickly so they may die if left for a few days. Just plant it the same day that you cut it. If you often have rot issues in your area, it you can dip the sections in a fungicide solution before planting.

    • @misskim2058
      @misskim2058 Před 2 lety +2

      Just don’t use sawdust from pressure-treated wood. That would be the main thing. Most lumber isn’t pressure-treated. It usually has little appx. 1/2” long indentations going the same direction, along the length of the piece, all over the wood. Looks like the length of an office staple. The average 2x4, 2x6 and plywood is just fine. And of course logs. For those who aren’t sure what’s what. Pressure treated is also usually a darker shade than untreated wood of the same species. It’s not the default wood when you buy dimensional lumber, untreated wood (safe for adding to plant growing material/dirt, no toxic chemicals) is the default.

    Would this still work without fertiliser?

    • @dr_obisgarden
      @dr_obisgarden  Před 2 lety +3

      Yeah, it'll work without the fertilizer but the vigor of the plantlets may be reduced depending on the nutrients available from the mother plant (crown section). If you don't have access to or don't want to use inorganic fertilizer, you can use organic options. If the organic options are liquid, you can follow the same recommendation as what was mentioned in the video. But if they are are solid, you can mix it with the sand and saw dust mixture. You can also use just top or garden soil but there is a high propensity for rot so you'll need to apply fungicide before planting. Happy gardening!

    Anybody else notice the tops are dying (drying/shriveling) rather quickly? I have taken the tops off before, and planted them. Some I've just twisted the top off, and stuck it in water (drinking water). some I have cut the top (leaving the top of the pineapple itself) and planted it in dirt. Worked both ways. Now it's like They are doing something (perhaps spaying something to kill the tops) to them. Because, the leaves are drying out, and shriveling before the pineapple is even fully ripe. Also, I noticed there's a white film on the leaves. And NONE of the tops will grow, the just brown and die! I've tried several of them. We eat pineapple (and other fruit) A Lot, and they did not do this last year (summer of 2021, and before). Excuse my language, but, that's Fucked Up, if they are poisoning the tops, so we cannot replant them!!! For starters, we're eating that stuff (even though I always wash the pineapple before carving, but that's Beside The Point!). AND that's pretty shitty to make it to where we can't grow the tops! We need to ALL be calling (or email/facebook/other) the company, and complaining about what is up with our fruit. What about people who may not wash them, and when you carve it, whatever substance that is on the outside, will be transferred to the inside with the knife. Then your eating whatever that stuff is! Don't get me started on the bananas, and mangos, cause something is going on there too!

      If the crown still has many leaves on them, you can still grow or multiply them.

      @@dr_obisgarden the ones I've been getting around here are not. They will not take root now matter what way it's done. I've done several of them in the past. They always grew. Now they are not! They just shrivel and dry out. Something is different about them now! Idk if it's the particular source of the pineapple, or if it's all of them.

      Dave, lay off the koolaid, bruh. To start the bananas have no seeds, because we breed them like that. We're aware that bananas have issues.
      Secondly, the areas where pineapples make good money on the market, are mostly areas where the climate won't allow you to harvest fruit anyway.
      Also, could it be that perhaps your soil is depleted, you don't feed your plants, and that's why the tops are discolouring? Or are you the type to write your senator because you dropped your coffee and 'the cups never used to slip from your hands"? 🤨

      @@davef5208 Do you live in the U.S. like me? If so then for years and years now It's been getting more and more unrealistic and impossible to buy produce from your local grocery store and be able to grow anything that actually yields a crop due to genetic tampering. You've heard the term "heirloom seeds"? Yeah well seeds just used to be called seeds.... I would suggest sourcing any seeds/starters/etc. from somewhere else.
