From the get go, this just seems too restricted of an approach on the position of laws and other forms of authority as a control of society . Maintained is a much better concept than control.
Self expression and crime not related. Society is not a bunch of people who all conform to rules and standards but that live respecting and cooperating with each other, benefiting from that coexistence. Developing healthy values is a much larger part of a safe society. Law are for those who for some reason believe their actions and motives are above the well-being of another.
if we have a society that seeks conformity then we have a society that does not value freedom of thought and self-expression but one that controls and condemns those ideas. if we think that parents, management and laws are there to be obeyed then we than it is likely that either those who obey or those who seek our obedience do so with fear. So rather than having a society that encourages diversity and mutual respect we are threatened by those who with different ideologies, lifestyles, and passions.
Nonconformist are not a threat to society but help to maintain the balance between law and oppression, authority and domination, and fear or independent thought and choice.

yeah the founding fathers were terrorists by her way of explaining the Merton's matrix... I don't know why she had to put so much ideology ridden language by giving value judgments to each part of the matrix... biased.

I wish that we had a more direct democracy. If average people could vote on laws and not representatives, drug laws on marijuana would be nonexistent. No one honestly cares if some people are smoking a drug in the privacy of their own home.

You have a valid point, but often times lawmakers and people who have seen the effects of them passing poor laws look at the long term effects and see much more than a citizens autonomy to participate in a substance that has been illicit for so long...
The government has far more to gain from a financial standpoint from allowing it to be legal but at the cost of the cognition in there populous and the damaging effects. I support very strict laws with marijuana and much more research done before they are allowed to have a place in medicine and pharmacology. I have seen the negative effects of working in mental health and it makes me sad to see people pursuing such a damaging substance.

Not all pot smokers stay at home and smoke only . Nowdays they are the working types and do come home and light one up. But they are working class. Looking at the hard working persons who run the dispensaries . The ones in Arizona are clean and neat. They do not take the look of a 1970's headshop. With Psychdelic posters of Hendrix and smells insence drifting out the door. with beads . There are true a population who does stay at home and not choose to work.Gaming preference and the Cheetos. The youth of today are in need of work and challenge. They have been given the concept that they are a generation of privilege. instant gratification. if you want that VW camper bus they worked for it.
