This video discusses the very interesting topic of drainage! Just kidding, while it isn't interesting though, it's very very important. Horses weren't meant to stand around in muck and water all day long and making sure they don't is a matter of making sure the water is able to drain away. Without that the horses end up being in muck all day, don't really dry off and become more susceptible to things like thrush, white line disease and mud fever. There is also a good possibility of bacteria and fungus eating away at the hooves and sole and that takes a while to resolve too.
The moral of the story is that if water doesn't have anywhere to go, it won't go. Putting material on top of the water can have a short term positive effect, but in the end you'll be looking for a way to have the water able to drain away easily. That answer is drainage, and that's why these ideas and thoughts are important.
To go with it, I talk about beautifying drainage as it doesn't all have to look like pipes and ditches. There are many ways to dress up drainage areas to look more natural and be easier on the eyes.

I've definitely done some rebuilds of drainage around here, but there are some things that required some proper thought... In some cases it sort of worked out lucky :)

I got an ugly run down place because it was what was available. You wouldn't believe the amount of work that needs done.
That's hard for sure. It's not easy to find nice places that don't cost a fortune. It's either money or hard work you have to put in...
I have awfull drainage. I'd like to make sure my run(about 60 by 30) is draining. Do you think limestone built up in the middle would work? I already built it up with a low on each side and it was fine til this winter which was really bad with rain and snow. Thanks in advance.
If you can "crown" the area, that will split the water to either side nicely. That's a very common approach for driveways actually. Unless you can grade one way or another. Should work quite well!

I have no idea of what your field looks like but I would venture a guess of "yes". Trenches, pipes, drainage rock and exit points are what you'll be thinking about. Watch the grade and make sure the water is always able to go down and leave the area. Should work great :)

What type of fencing is that? Is it electric?
It's a monofilament plastic. Called Bayco finish line.
My drainage is pretty good but after 2 weeks straight of heavy rain I'm finding it insufficient.
Drainage was something I thought about right from the beginning. I knew I needed to get rid of water and get rid of it fast. We get too much rain to not have it be a primary item around here. Even so, there are modifications that get made all the time to improve it a little here and a little there. Keep at it!
drain make ponds and ditch it .. i like reserve water , dragon fly pond to eat bugs,, horse barn up high when ever it rains the pee poo and crap washes away haha.

been on the bottom of a hill . see old romania barn . rock few feet wood on top . ground dropped off after the foundation . seems like it would just wick away . in nz they make moguls . long mounds go down into ditch kinda dirt from that goes on each side and slanted to drain water . graze in flood then they can eat the low part when water goes down . use what you have . yo got nice weather out there .. have a good one . looking and researching and learning from ya . haha .
