How Coastal Spits are formed - labelled diagram and explanation
Vložit

- Detailed explanation of how sediment is transported along the coast by the process of long shore drift and then deposited on the sheltered side of a headland to form a coastal spit. I also discuss and explain the prevailing wind, the formation of the salt marsh and the role that the river estuary plays in the formation of this coastal feature. The explanation is ideal for class notes and also can easily be replicated as revision for examinations.

This is too funny.
I just came from looking at a map of New Zealand's South Island and wondered how Farewell Spit was formed - So thank you!
Hi, the aerial photograph of the spit at the end of the video is Farewell spit .
Geography IGCSE tomorrow, wish me luck!
Wow, that is very early! Normally they start later. GOOD LUCK!
Me too paper 1 right? Good luck bro!
Did you fail?
My GSCE Geology Exam is tomorrow
I hope you did well
Helped soooo much! THANK YOU🙏🏼😁
I was waiting for “we will land at New Delhi in 15 mins. Thankyou for flying with SpiceJet.”
My teacher told me to watch this so...
Same
Lmao sme
SAME
Same lmao
Same lol
This video is really helpful
Great video! This explains it really well. But how is the river involved in the formation of a spit?
Same question
It deposits tons of sediment. Silt. Etc.
I'm a bit late, but if anyone wants the answer...
The river is involved, as a previous user said, to deposit sediment and salt that is collected in the salt marsh. However, it also ensures, through the river's added current, that the spit does not carry on fully to the next headland and form a bar (a coastal feature connecting two headlands together).
Basically, it keeps the spit a spit, and stops it from forming into a bar.
Hope this helps! Good luck :)
the spit should form at the tip of the headland, not at the other side of the headland.
sending on behalf of 2X of ACS International. They made me do it. I am sorry.
Ha ha! Thanks, strictly speaking yes, although you will never find anything in nature to perfectly fit any model :)
Have a look at Presque isle state park on google maps and you will see a spit formation with no headland at all.
I have geo examz tomorrow 😂this video helped me soooooo much ..thank you 😘😘

It is 8:15am here and my work is due at 3pm and I have like a billion questions to do!!!!!!!
Got a geography exam tommorow afternoon, just catching up on some stuff I'm unsure of
Thanks a lot
Exam on Tuesday with me luck!
What stops a spit from turning into a bar? I thought offshore bars can be formed at a mouth of a river or a bay.
the river
Thank you
Thanks so much really really helped
ty
Compound spits?
salt marsh
fine sediment deposited in sheltered areas
okay, thanks for making these videos, making my revisions easier for my test tomorrow (don’t judge lol) is the headland the same as the mainland though?? I have a diagram in my book and I was wondering if it’s the same
The headland is part of the mainland. However, the headland is a coastal feature that is formed by erosion. There is another CZcams on my channel that explains how a headland is formed.
Geographer Online, thanks,
I’ll go watch it now
i love you so much i will subscribe
why is the river important apart from depositing material needed for a salt marsh?
Yup
your my idol
Great video!
thx
i think poland is mother of sits, if not correct me
#GCSE2020
How is a hook formed on the coast?
another prevailing wind affects the spit causing it to be pushed towards the bay
idk why im saying this im like 5months late and revising so yeah LOL
HERE FROM ST JOHNS COLLEGE CARDIFF
End-Of-Semester exam next week~
So why is the river important here?
The river prevents the spit turning into a bar and it also adds sediment to the salt marsh that is found behind the spit
Haawa from Haida Gwaii
Lemme guess? Geography homework?
exam on Monday, wish me luck

This video is technically incorrect - spits form on concordant NOT discordant coastlines ... you may want to re-do this....
It's been like 5 years, 4 years since this comment... Give man a break
