    I once read a reddit comment about romance stories, the "danny devito rule"
    replace the male lead's looks with danny devito, if it becomes creepy, it's a bad story, if it's still romantic, the story is fine

      the real horror are the sales numbers of romance novels....
      Then again lots of men watch porn with very unrealistic women in it, and from anthropological research it seems those two are similar.
      So, go off ladies ^.^

    • @dynamicworlds1
      @dynamicworlds1 Před 4 lety +409

      @@Nerobyrne hey, authors can write all the erotica they want without much judgement from me. Even some of the very dark stuff out there can be turned into....let's call it "inspiration for consentual fantasy play" and even the stuff that can't people generally have a better time seperating erotic fantasies from reality (especially with half-way decent sex-ed).
      It's the _romanticizing_ of abusive behavior where I start to have problems, and while it is far from contained specifically to romance novels and/or dirrected at women, that is a big source of it and does a lot of harm.
      If someone has an unrealistic view of sex but a healthy understanding of relationships, that problem can be talked through. If someone has an unhealthy understanding of relationships....well, you're not going to bang that problem out in the bedroom. (Also, consent and extreme abuse don't really coexist, so...)

Tbh, I've never seen a romance story with both characters being more than an average of 33 years old.

    Make sure that, whenever the alpha male does something horrible, their romantic partner calls them out on it, only for her to be overcome with lust. After they f***, make sure that she gives up on the argument, because, you know, he had a hard childhood.
    Don’t forget to make them get engaged after they knew each other for a grand total of 1 month and have the characters dismiss any suggestions at the possibility that they’re moving too fast.
    Finally, remember that character development is difficult, so, instead of the alpha hero actually changing throughout the course of the book (as the female protagonist is “fixing him”), just have characters say that there’s been character development, despite there being little to no change in their behaviour

    Everything in this video is true to live and I am living proof of that.
    After locking the “legally” adult female (who is very sexy but average looking) into the basement my billion dollar mansion for 3 weeks, I started to feel a change in me for the better. It was during one of my many sweaty workout sessions with my personal hair stylist that her gazing eyes made me change and reflect.

    • @sleepysera
      @sleepysera Před 4 lety +43

      @@Adventurewizard44 Yea they are meant for the readers to project themselves onto. The idea is that they are "Hollywood-ugly", as in, because they are usually so QUIRKY and DIFFERENT they don't know how to carry themselves well so they look plain and boring like most readers probably think of themselves. But if the power of falling in love thrusts them into self-optimizing mode or their new love interests gifts them pretty things, they show unexpected beauty and glam up.
      There's also a ton of other stuff interwoven with that, like the fact that ignorance of one's charmes still is considered a positive trait, because a woman who is pretty and knows it and possible acts accordingly is considered an evil manipulator. The likeable protagonist can't be like that, they must think they are normal or below average while all the side characters constantly praise how stunning she actually is. Considering romance is mostly women writing for other women, it's ridiculous how much we stick to dumb, kinda toxic old-fashioned views on women.

Have the love interest be deeply obsessed with a certain sexual fetish in a totally not creepy way, and it should totally be okay for the love interest to either force or guilt the heroine to engaging in their fetishes without giving them much say. Have this fetish become the entirety of the characters relationship and sex life, making them engage in it so much that you have to wonder if the author wrote the whole story one handed and if their is any real love between the characters of just fetishizing lust?

      Come to think of it that's sorta going back to where it all started: Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice. He's the original brooding, prickly male romantic hero that the heroine changes for the better, but that involves the protagonist (and reader) actually learning about him and his backstory. And it's not just Elizabeth's love that changes him, it's telling him that he's got his head up his rear, him listening to her and taking it to heart, and doing the right thing even though he's convinced when he's does it he's lost all possibility of winning her (even though she does change her mind at the end.) Most romance novelists nowadays take the broody parts into outright sociopathy and then make him into a housekitten with a bit of unconditional love (and letting him emotionally or otherwise abuse her for a bit) in a way that flat out breaks suspension of disbelief. Then again, I'll admit it takes a bit for me to enjoy any romance plot. Like Charlotte said, "I've never been the romantic sort."

      "This night Tam'll let... powerful and terrifying magic enter his body [...] That magic'll take control not only of his body, but of his soul and mind as well, turning him into a savage hunter. It'll fill all of his thoughts with only one goal: finding a partner for tonight. Their connection will release the magic that will enter the soil, giving plants strength to grow for the whole year"

    I don’t know if you can cover this due to the subject matter but it would be interesting to see you do a video on terrible writing advice on writing mental illness/trauma and how it’s romanticizes in media. Or how traumatic events are merely used to shock,the recovery is quick and a perfect cure, or they must forgive their attacker/abuser and must let them back into their life, must not be angry about it anymore.

      Agression? Showing anger? Rebelling? What exactly?
      If you start to talk to your teacher with an angry tone: yeah the teacher (and everyone else) doesn't have to tolerate you.
      Angression - probably obvious.
      Just looking angry - never heard about someone being punished than.
      The school doesn't punish mental issues. Especially not if you don't avoid treatment.

      @Nionivek Před 4 lety

      But there is a difference between someone not tolerating you because you are angry... And them punishing you for it. A police officer who arrests you, not because you did anything wrong, but because you didn't like that they stopped you... Is an abusive officer. You are even going as far as to call natural emotional reactions as "Mental issues", it is no wonder that ADD/ADHD is an overprescribed diagnosis.

    7:24 - I already knew about the origin of the whole Alpha misconseption, but it always reminds me of that scene from Battlefield Earth where Terl (the main villain), wanting to know what's our favorite food in a attempt to bribe the protagonist to work for him, let him and other guys escape so he can observe them from afar. The problem is that they ended up in a place full of snow and nothing but rats to eat, and since the heroes ended up eating them, Terl assumed we humans like to eat rats.
    Good to know that we humans have the same "inteligence" level of the Psychlos.
