This is why I have never referred to the WW2 generation as "the greatest." They mostly fell asleep when the war ended, other than the McCarthy era, which ended up falling far short, and allowed all this to happen.
I reckon it's because they were convinced on the whole, that they had defeated all the "correct" N-E-me's so the trouble was all over.
Also the availability of information was tiny compared to today.
The news articles / shows were widely accepted by all as truth and little to no alternative sources to be found.
